    Description

My name is zied from the south of Tunisia . I m also a traveller who visited so many countries around the world like India , japan , lebanon , senegal , ghana , mali , gambia, egypt , iran , emirates ... i live in zammour , a traditional berbere amazigh village located in the heart of matmata mountains where you can taste the hospitality of the tunisian authentique villagers . Zammour is the entrance to the Tunisian sahara and only 100 km farther from the seaside the dream island like we call it djerba island . After travelling a long time abroad i came back to my hometown and started working on ecotourism welcoming travellers from all over the world .
Our village is the home of my Zammouri family and we have lived here for many generations. In this village, everyone knows each other and takes care of each other. When you come to stay with us, you can become part of the community – you will receive many things and get the opportunity to give back. You can help with improving my house to accommodate guests, support our agricultural projects or help organize our trekking festival (end of October/beginning of November).
A few years ago i created a yearly big festival for outdoor activities that s happening every November. Hundred of Tunisians and travellers who are interested in amazigh culture , the sahara , trekking , camping , cycling , running, hiking and other activities are joining the event .. it s a dream that became a truth and i m trying with my team to improve it more . I m inviting all travellers from all over the world to join us discover our amazigh culture and help us to show the world the beauty of our village and our country tunisia . See you soon .

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Zammour is a village where you can learn a lot about traditional southern Tunisian culture and an ideal place to practice (Tunisian) Arabic. It s an amazing experience to discover a different culture in a so different environment surounded by kind people and nature lovers. There is a lot of cultural heritage to be found in different places in the area (see ‘what else?’ below), but you can start learning about the local culture by meeting Zammourians in the house or the local café. Many of them will have time to meet with you and are interested in learning about you. If you already speak a little bit of Arabic (or learn it during your stay) this will help you to connect to different people, but usually there are also a few who speak English. Some people in Zammour work in agriculture (e.g. planting olive or fig trees) – by working with them you can learn about local agriculture. What you learn is mostly up to your own initiative, so bring your curiosity.

For everybody the visit starts with simply experiencing the life in Zammour. From there, you can start to support us with different projects, for example improving spaces in the house (to start renting them out), working in agriculture or organizing the festival. However, projects are not always predefined and I won’t be handing out tasks to you every day. It’s important that you can take your own initiative and that you are an autonomous person. We are happy with and open to anything that you can give back to our community. You can also write in your mother language or other languages about our village and activities . We ll use the articles to post them online on our website and social media .

  • What else ...

    What else ...

In the village Zammour and the near surroundings you can enjoy hiking and trekking, go camping and discover the berber castles that were built hundreds of years ago (Ksar Zammour directly next to the house and Ksar Hallouf in hiking distance). Travel a bit outside of Zammour and you can discover the sahara, visit matmata where they filmed a part of star wars movie longtime ago, and discover more Ksars for example in Douret, Chenini and Tatatouine ... you can also enjoy swiming and discover djerba island one of the best exotic places in tunisia .. There is cheap public transport available to all other cities, but a lot of people also choose to hitchhike which is safe to do in Tunisia, especially here in the countryside.
