Description
Hello Volunteers !
My name is Dom, and together with my partner, I live on our homestead in Central Portugal. We are located at the very edge of a small hamlet, nestled in the middle of a beautiful olive grove. We left our busy lives and corporate jobs behind to cultivate our own food, with the ultimate goal of coming as close as possible to self-sustainability. Come and experience an alternative, fulfilling lifestyle with us!
Please also read the `What else `section.
What we offer & what you can learn:
Permaculture Mastery: Benefit from over 30 years of permaculture experience.
Daily Farm Life: Every season brings different tasks. You will help with preparing seedlings, building garden beds, weeding, composting, pruning fruit trees, planting, and harvesting whatever is ready (including harvesting olives and pressing them for oil).
Local Culture & Leisure: Visit vibrant farmers' markets and our village's famous local wine cellars. There is also a beautiful swimming lake within biking distance and some rivers sides.
Accommodation & Privacy (Important Note): We provide you with a comfortable bedroom or a tent. A water kettle for making hot drinks is always available for you.
Please note: Our main house is a large, open-plan space that serves as our private quarters, kitchen, living room, and bedroom. Because my wife lives, works, and rests in this shared space, the main house is strictly our private sanctuary. We kindly ask our volunteers to fully respect this boundary so everyone can enjoy their personal downtime after a productive day in the garden.
Meals & Food:Breakfast: Self-service between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM in the kitchen, or we will prepare your breakfast essentials the evening before so you can enjoy them at your outdoor/downstairs seating area.Lunch & Dinner: We will discuss food arrangements together when you arrive. Sometimes we cook a warm meal together, and sometimes it is just quick sandwiches—we like to keep it flexible! -

Important Notes & Insurance:Insurance:
We are a private homestead. For your safety and ours, you must have your own active travel health insurance (like the EHIC card for EU citizens) and a personal liability insurance (Haftpflicht) that covers volunteering abroad.
Workaway Profile: We only accept volunteers with a verified, active profile on this platform to ensure standard insurance coverage.
We do live isolated. We have neighbours, yes. But its countryside. No public transport on weekends, no frequent public transport on weekdays.
On foot Podentes is reachable : it has a 1 woman small shop which is closed at noon and a café for drinks which only opens Sundays. Swimming Lake in biking distance- we have 1 old functioning bike.
Your own transport is a plus- supermarket towns take hours to reach on foot- 20 minutes by car.
