Description
Let's just get right into what in the world exactly are we trying to do here. In 1988 a book was published titled "Permaculture - a designer's manual" and towards the end of chapter 12 it talks about species of plants that can stop the spread of fire. Plants like comfrey, figs and mulberry have multiple uses in permaculture systems and can be propagated very fast from clone cuttings. And since this area is very prone to fire (and very ignorant of this beautiful list of firefighting species) we here wish to set up a nursery to sell these plants... That's the simple version.
But a permaculture project is never simple. In order for these plants to grow rapidly and multiply we need to grow good+fluffy+fertile+wet soil on land that is mostly clay and rocks that turns to dust in the summer drought. How? Well, there's no simple version for the answer to that question. Permaculture? Absolutely, yes! And if that's what you want to involve yourself with (to learn, do, experience and to teach) then come and get it!! We offer free PDCs every now and then ;)

Our project spans two lands, a half-hour walk from each other and and one of them is a half-hour walk to the small town of Pedrògão Pequeno.
On the bigger plot (~1.3ha) is an old little house with 5 bedrooms and a 4mx3mx1.2m pool. We have plenty of fruit trees (Orange, Mandarine, Khaki, Fig, Lemon, Cherries, and Kiwis) you can pick from. We make our own sour dough once a week. You could stay in one of the rooms, or there is plenty of space to put a hammock, tent or park a campervan.
The smaller one (~0.4 ha) is where we establish the food forest. It is off-grid, solar powered and offers very basic amenities (compost toilet, outdoor shower, and kitchen). It's more secluded but also closer to town.
If you're not afraid of entering a project in its initial chaotic phase, if you want to see how we make weekly plans and divide up the work, if you want to be a part of growing a new synergy of plants, animals and humans then come and get in contact with us. We believe that it is possible for young people to turn the whole of the Iberian desert into a forest, and we even believe that it is probably profitable to do so. We have books and resources on the topic so if you want to learn and be part of this then why not start soon? Understanding it takes time. It's about as hard as learning a language. That is why we need young people to look into this.
Help
The work is very varied and continously changing. Feel free to contact us and ask what kind of work is to be expected on the months that you wish to join. We try our best to match what you would enjoy doing with our plans. We usually write a long list of possible activities once a week and come together to discuss which ones we feel like doing and which ones need to be prioritized.
