  • Description

    We are:
Henry van Thull (61). Profile: former backpacker (Asia), teacher primary school (last year), musician (studio, guitar, singer), carpenter, electrician, plumber, welder, person with many ideas and experiences and always curious about new things. Used to unite the useful with the pleasant. So always busy with something, but now enjoying life more by doing and planning less and spent more time with music (playing guitar and singing).
Jane Wirjosentono-van Thull (48) Profile: former backpacker (Asia), helpful, modest and a good listener, housewife, rich life experiences, loving plants- and gardenwork, knows how to work, but also knows when to stop.
Key van Thull (our son / 19). Went this year to Holland to study. A musical, technical and modest young man.
Indy van Thull (our daughter/ 17). Will go to Holland next year to study. An open and clever girl.

This schoolyear(2017-2018) will be the last schoolyear I will be working as a teacher. Thursday and friday I don`t work on school anymore. Since January 2017 we have a small company: renting 2 apartments for tourists. We only want them being occupied during the high season (dec.. jan., feb.). The rest of the year we accept the bookings from Bnb, which has an average of 2 bookings per month. We are okay with that. Enjoying life is now more important to us than making money. Aruba is a tropical dessert island. Palm trees are not native trees on Aruba, while there are many on the island (hotels, etc.). We came to Aruba in 1999 and when we bought land, we build our house ourselves ( +/- 500 m2 / 3 bathrooms, 7 bedrooms. We created a big palm garden (+/- 2000 m2) with hundreds of palm trees of different species. We love it and everything is green around us, but it`s also a lot of work to maintain it. Specially when getting older.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We are just normal people living our lives and enjoying what we created on Aruba.
You can have a good conversation with us and we are open for ideas.
What you can learn from that, is up to you.

  • Help

    Project / work:
    1. Creating a website. If you are an experienced website-creator (for our apartments), we will invite you if we don`t have yet a workawayer.
    2. Finishing a house, which we renovated, but which is not yet finished. If you are an experienced carpenter or a handy man, we will invite you if we don`t have yet a workawayer.
    3. If you don`t have a certain professional competence the garden is the place to work. If we didn`t get a request from people, mentioned in 1 and 2, we could invite you.
    4. We ask you to work 25 hours per week: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday: 5 hours each (08.00 – 13.00), Thursday and Friday each 4 hours (08.00 – 12.00) and Saturday and Sunday each 1 hour (only watering the palm trees: 09.00 – 10.00). Watering can only be done in the morning before 10.00 hour, otherwise you can not see anymore which plant didn`t get water from the irrigation system.

We can accommodate 2 workawayers, but only if they have the special skills mentioned above. We don`t prefer couples, but if both persons have special skills, they may apply.

  • Accommodation

    Relation and accomodation:
You will be our guest and we want to continue our lives as we live it now. We prefer travelers and backpackers, who have seen something of the world, but if you have one of the skills mentioned above there is a big chance that we will invite you; even when you come straight from your place in your country. We are used of having people around (tourists, workawayers, etc.). If you come we will not tell you rules to follow, only practical things to know. You are the guest and you must know what that means. If you come to us with a hidden agenda (try to settle on Aruba, only coming for a cheap holiday, not having interest in us or the island, etc., you should not contact us. We are open and hospitable people who want you to feel at home from the very first second. You can eat and drink as much as you want. Although we had some vegetarians and vegans, we prefer workawayers who also eat meat. You will like the Surinam-Javanese food, that we eat. We don`t want to change our momentary routine. We like to see the interaction between you and us as a natural process. Sometimes it “clicks”, sometimes it doesn`t. There`s nothing bad about that. That`s why we always have a tryout-week. If within one week we feel tension and stress in our house, you must leave. No discussion. So it`s important to know yourself and why you want to come to us.
You will be having your own workaway room with air-conditioning. Untill now all workawayers slept in a very nice apartment with air-conditioning, TV, etc. and a private bathroom, because it was available. We know that the few hosts on Aruba will not offer you such accommodation, but don`t take what we offer you for granted. Aruba is a holiday-island, but we worked very hard to create what we have now. I hope you understand.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

When you finish work at 13.00, 12.00 or 09.00 hour, you can sometimes drive with Jane to town, because she has to pick up our daughter Indy from school. There you can take the bus to any place on the island. You can come back with a minibus ($ 3) or we can pick you up, but only if we have to be there for another matter. So in principle we will not supply transport. Of course you can go with us if we go to the beach or another place. Aruba is a very busy island and you can look on the internet what `s possible on Aruba and what you can do. Public transport is 3 km away.
