  • Description

The school is located in the lovely town of Cofradia, Cortes, near to the Caribbean coast of Honduras. We aim to offer a top-quality, affordable bilingual education to our children and a level of community support and involvement that does not exist in the local public schools. Many of our kids come from very low socio-economic backgrounds and thanks to our volunteers we are able to offer them a free or low cost bilingual education they could not otherwise afford. Being bilingual in Honduras is a massive advantage and gives our kids the chance to end the cycle of poverty for themselves and for their families.

In order to offer a free or low cost education to our students, we are reliant on foreign volunteers coming to teach with us throughout the year. The school is founded on the principle that education empowers students to lead lives of their own creation. Students who attend our school become responsible, motivated, and passionate people ready to build a brighter future for themselves, their community and their country.

Our school has been educating the students of Cofradia for over 20 years and follows The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Our volunteers are required to plan lessons, however, we have an effective and easy to use curriculum in place for our teachers.

Our volunteers love working with the students at our school as well as creating bonds with fellow teachers. At any one time we normally have between 8 and 14 volunteers teaching with us. Our volunteers typically spend the time after school together and often travel together at the weekends. A typical afternoon can be cooking together, watching a movie using our projector or walking to the local river. Our volunteers come for the students but often leave with life long friends.

All volunteer-taught classes are conducted in English, so Spanish-language skills are not required. Prior teaching experience is not required to work at our school. While experience in education is certainly beneficial, we place more importance on highly passionate and dedicated volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of our students.

We are currently looking for volunteers who are interested in teaching English for the 2020-2021 school year. For the sake of consistency and to insure maximum progress and success for our students, we do prefer to accept volunteers that commit to the entire academic year (10 months). Our minimum required length of stay for a volunteer classroom teacher is one quarter of the school year. However, we welcome enthusiastic teachers who can only come for shorter periods to be classroom assistants, resource teachers and/or offer something really special for either the students or the community in general.

    Quarter 1:
The first part of the school year will run approx. August 17 - October 23. This will include a teacher training and orientation, Kinder Camp, five weeks of teaching lessons, one vacation week, and two final weeks of review and exams.

    Quarter 2:
The second part of the semester will run approx. October 23 - January 15. This will include a short teacher training for new volunteers, eight weeks of teaching lessons, two vacation weeks, and two final weeks of review and exams.

    Quarter 3:
The third quarter of the school year will run approx. January 15 - March 19. This will include a short teacher training for new volunteers, seven weeks of teaching lessons, and two final weeks of review and exams.

    Quarter 4:
The final part of the school year will run approx. March 19 - June 4. This will include a short teacher training for new volunteers, three weeks of teaching lessons, one vacation week, five more weeks of teaching lessons, and two final weeks of review and exams.

In return for volunteering with us, we offer free accommodation in our volunteer house, two meals / day at the school, and group food available to cook for evening meals. We also provide airport / bus terminal transportation for your departure and arrival. We will pay for any and all minor medical expenses for our volunteers, and lastly, the school will support volunteers who commit to a semester or more of school by paying for their visa run / extension.

One of the best parts being here is the endless opportunities it offers to get to know and serve the students and the community of Cofradia. This will give real satisfaction, and at the same time you will enjoy being here interacting with the local people. The community is very welcoming and holds our volunteer teachers in high regard. Many of our teachers spend time with the families of students outside of school hours which allows them to be truly immersed in Honduran culture. It is commonplace for mothers to have us over for cooking lessons or for families to take us on day long excursions to explore the surrounding mountains. In addition, due to the friendly nature of local people, this is the ideal place to practice speaking Spanish.

Our volunteer house is home to a beautiful, people-friendly pit bull who has experience with other pit bulls. Her owners think she would be very accepting of other doggie friends, but she might need time to adjust. We have a neighbor who lives on our property, and takes care of the dog during the daytime.
