This is an agricultural project, in the hills of SW Alentejo 8 km from the ocean (Odeceixe). The 21 hectares property is crossed by Rota Vicentina, the long distance walking trail that runs through the entire region from Santiago do Cacém to Sagres.
After being abandoned for more than 50 years, the property has turned into a wild and powerful natural forest, where one can find all the varieties of the local flora. The project aims to recover and regenerate this natural treasure.
There is much chores to do in the forest as we are in the regeneration phase of the project. The 16 hectare Medronho forest needs to be cleaned and prepared for the harvest season of Medronho in September. Besides that, it is time to collect wood from the forest and start to prepare the distillation season. In the meanwhile, there is a vegetable garden to care of, the housing of animals to plan and several wood shelters to build.

The long-term vision of the project is to contribute for the valorisation of the natural forest of the region and to create a sustainable way of managing an agroforestry property, being able to generate income from the natural resources available. Volunteers joining the project will be able to learn about the production of Medronho, honey and vegetables, will be in contact with farm animals and also have the opportunity to meet with hikers and travellers passing on the trail just in front of the property.
S. Miguel and Odeceixe villages are a few minutes distance on a bike, allowing Workwayers to get to know real life rhythm and habits of the Alentejo and Algarve, as this is a border town of the two Portuguese districts. Beaches are also close with good surfing and world class hiking along the coast.

If you are enthusiastic about dreaming, planning and building, then you’ve reached the right place as there is a lot of room for creating new projects. Volunteers with experience in building, carpentering, using saw machines and other forest machines are a great asset. But also those without the skills but the right mindset are more than welcome!
Volunteers can stay in their campervan or in a shared house in the farm with 2x rooms, living room, toilet and kitchen. It will all depend on the timing and needs of fellow candidates to join the project.
Food is provided so that you may have everything you need to cook for yourself, this is done collectively. The vegetable garden will also supply some of the main goods. There will also be days where we eat separate, but ideally the dynamic is that of a friendly group sharing food by the fire under a sky full of stars.
Odeceixe and S. Miguel villages are just around the corner, allowing for some social interaction. The beach of Odeceixe with world class surfing and hiking is just 8 km away. The region has many small towns and interesting projects to explore and get to know.
There are daily busses to Lisbon, Sagres and Lagos if you ever feel the need to crush with a big city and all it brings along, taking a break from being in the wild.
