    Description

    Greetings, we are Kristel and Kurt with an alternative homestead on the Canadian Prairie. We are a couple in our thirties, travelled the world and are down to earth. We live in a unique ecosystem where the prairies meet the boreal forest. So the land here is a mixture of farmland, pasture and woodland. Wildlife lovers will love it here as there are moose, coyotes, deer and even bears. Lots of migratory birds to be observed.

    We speak English and Dutch (Flemish). We are good-natured, fun-loving, creative folk! We love our alternative lifestyle, enjoy being healthy and live a balanced life: creating alternative living spaces, yoga, meditation, dancing, eating veggies and having a fire or hammock time after a day of hard work.

    Tasks may include: garden help, weeding, pruning, painting, building raised beds, brush clearing, shelterbelt clean-up, mulching with wood chips, fencing, and general repairs. Creative and decorative tasks too! Other tasks come up seasonally, so no two days look quite the same! Expect plenty of fresh air, wide open skies, and satisfying hands-on work.

    *Creative and passionate people are highly encouraged to apply! Thanks for your interest!*

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    You can learn how work with the earth. Gardening, growing crops from seed. Observing nature and growing trees and vegetables. As well we have a great knowledge of traveling/camping in Western Canada and the Rocky Mountains (which we do often and throughout the summer). We can assist and guide you with any questions here. We also love hiking, yoga, alternative living situations (tiny home), cabins in the wild, etc. We are passionate people who work hard, always have a creative project (or five...) on the go! We balance hard work with good fun!

    Help

    Early in the season we will need help expanding garden beds, from preparation through to seed planting. We grow as organically as possible and use natural growing techniques to give our plantings the best chance of success.
    Beyond the garden, we have a young orchard and grow fruit trees extensively for personal use. We will need help expanding the orchard through weeding, mulching, and watering, as well as digging and transplanting small trees, planting, potting, and building and filling raised beds.
    Other activities include painting projects, general upkeep, and organising around the homestead: there is a wide variety of tasks here to suit different interests and strengths.
    Most of this work is hands-on and sometimes repetitive, with tasks staggered throughout the week. Pulling weeds is a daily ritual, grounding and meditative. You can work away in your own little section of trees or garden, getting your hands dirty and connecting with nature. The weather is typically hot and sunny, with the occasional rainy spell.

    You should be comfortable with:

    * Do tasks independently
    * Some digging
    * Light lifting
    * Having fun!

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

    Our Workawayers will get their own accommodation in a large forty foot, two bedroom RV trailer. This is a nice option as you will have your own space and privacy! It is situated about 20 meters from our little house. Your accommodation is fully powered and has a kitchen, fridge, heat, shower, etc. Access to a combination of Flush RV Toilet and Outhouse. There is a nice deck to relax on with a lovely view of the garden area. Our homestead is located far enough from towns and cities to see the milky way and if lucky the Aurora Borealis at night, yet close enough to not miss out on the comforts of the modern world!
    With your own RV trailer, you can decide what time to start the day and eat in your own privacy. We are close by anytime, but we honour your personal time!
    We are Whole Food Plant-Based/GF, but we offer a weekly fee for you to cover your groceries, which gives you autonomy about your eating choices.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

    If you love nature, working with your hands and being outside - this is the place for you! As well a place of relaxation and solitude. We are easy going and will ensure to listen to you and your desires. We are very knowledgeable of camping and traveling all over Western Canada - so we can help with advice on this! There is lots to explore in the area with wildlife, outdoor activities and a nice place to RELAX (as we have heard from many visitors). Great place to write a book, do yoga, stay in a remote cabin, go for walks, make art, learn all about gardening and planting trees, re-wilding, ... etc.
