    Volunteering here

I really value the trust that is built between us, when workaways come and stay at my home. I enjoy the myriad of different nationalities and experiences that are shared during the workaway exchanges, and the bonds that are made through working together. The common theme that we seem to share is the pleasure of being out side in this beautiful landscape situated 1km the sea, people passionate about outdoor sports activities, thrive here making the most of the access to mountain biking, walking, swimming and surfing.

If you are thinking to work here with me, please understand that it is to work and you need to take responsibility for the jobs that you agree to do with in the time specified. Dialogue is paramount to your happiness here. I believe if your are happy with the balance of work and free time, then you will have a wonderful experience here as many volunteers have had before you.

I am always flexible to find work that suits you the best with the tasks from the list.

The exchange is that you are on the doorstep of the sea and the natural park, staying in my lovely home with like minded caring people and in your free time you can enjoy all the natures and its beauty and share in the mt biking rides, yoga trips to beach and friends etc. I have learnt to ask people to leave if any volunteers do not fulfill these basic requests of exchange for the sake of the well being of the people in the house and the ethos of Workaway. Please ask your self why you want to come to visit me and what your goals are while you stay with my family, these questions are important to consider before you contact me to discuss your visit. I am have learnt to clear about these things, because I want us all to enjoy this very enriching experience together:)

I am 48 yrs old and have two daughters of 12and 14yrs. My children's routines forms the structure of my life. I like to work then spend time with my kids, enjoy the wild landscape around here mt biking, surfing, walking, swimming, making crafts and learning guitar. I also find time for yoga/meditation, you are welcome to join me at 6.30am ish or evening by candle light.

In the last 5yrs period I was a director of the local waldorf Primary school, till last year I was teaching painting at this school, of which both of my children have attend. My eldest daughter is now home schooled and my youngest still attends the Steiner school (Waldorf), I also hold some private classes at the house.

I have a spacious 5 bedroom house with a pool, surrounded by the natural landscape of the Cape Vincentina Natural Park and we are just 1km, 10 mins walk across the fields to the beach. I also have a 18" yurt in the garden which is used for short course in the winter, but is also possible to stay in. Around the house we have a large established flower garden and we have started a new vegetable garden work with organic permaculture principles plus some fruit trees, but this needs more focus this year .We also have just a few free-range laying chickens, one rabbit, a cat and sometimes we look after friends pets when they are away on holiday.

During the summer the house is used for art courses and yoga courses and yoga surf holidays which I am not involved in and no volunteers are taken at this time.

I get a huge sense to fulfillment working and getting my hands dirty in the garden and enjoy the sense of good work well done , each year I try and make the house/garden better than the year before with more creativity.

I hope that you can come and join the list of contented volunteers that have stayed with me and have returned again over the past 5 years.

Sorry the accommodation does not suit families with young children or people suffering from depression or drug/alcohol dependency. It's a non smoking house.

    dinner 7.30

We generally have Vegetarian food but enjoy meal meat of fish in the evenings on some evenings.
If you wish to have a full meat diet at every meal, then I would ask you to buy these items independently.

Free-time can be joining me mt biking, occasional surfing trips, (if you are considering borrowing surf boards you need to arrange your transport to take the boards, unless we are going. You would also need to bring or buy your own wetsuit, especially if you are a man!) walking to beaches,. There are local buses (5 mins walk way) to Lagos/Sagres. There are local bars restaurants etc in Salema and Figueira to walk to ... Lagos etc, (It's not acceptable to return drunk and loud to the house).

I like to work with our volunteers were possible (but with the home sch commitments it's not often at present), I enjoy sharing the jobs that need doing and I have experience in all the jobs as a single mum, at some point, so I am happy share my experience to help with people learing of different tasks. I have found some people are also totally self motivated and can organise there hours and task independently and this works very well for me too.

I find the girls and I have the best relationships with people who also love or out door life style and our interests too. The girls are very keen on our visiting workaways and enjoy spending time helping and being involved in projects, in the evenings they like playing cards, making music, creating theatres, dance, singing. But if you wish to be less involved in your free time there is your own private space to chill out too.

You can walk to 3 beach from the house, also to the seaside towns of Salema and Figueira, plus there are many beautiful other beaches around here, 20 within 20mins drive as we are situated on a peninsula. The surfing here is amazing with 20 mins drive you have access to all conditions re wind direction and wave height etc. I have two surfboards and numerous body boards. Mt bikes and a moped that can be used also. If you want to go surfing more than once a week then you need to think about your own transport, wet suit etc.

We would be happy to help with English Language but a good command of the basic language is necessary, or to have help with our Portuguese. My children are fluent in both languages as all their lessons at school are/were in Portuguese.

  • Accommodation

October 2016 onwards I have 2 bedroom with 2 bunk beds and two twin rms, for workaways. The rooms are in the main house we share the 3 bathrooms, they have with hot water and the rooms have heating. There are a number of shared social spaces which enable you to enjoy your free time away from the family if you wish with internet. Upstairs there is a terrace with hammocks and distant with sea views to chill out on.

We are a relaxed family who enjoy the solicablility of visitors and the joy that it brings , we enjoy the sociable nature of including workerways in our daily life, I have a working house, were I some times receive art classes and work at home on lesson prep and research, otherwise I prefers to be outside working. In the evening we practise guitar, the girls practise dance and shows, play games, do handy crafts or art and I spend time with the girls reading etc. I regularly do yoga and each week get out on a mt bike and ride off road on the great tracks from the house or go in the sea or walk on the beaches.
It is essential that people are tidy and clean up after themselves and keep the bathrooms clean along with there own personal spaces and respect the home environment. We observe all the normal needs for tidiness for the well being of all. These elements are important to me as they allows everything to run smoothly, calmly and generally with a lot of fun... smiles are free and abundant:)

I do not smoke, take drugs or drink alcohol and require people to honour our preferences. If you wish to smoke, we ask people to do it out of sight of the house. I am happy to buy beer and wine to have with the meals and expect moderate consumption and respect for our family if you consume it.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Getting here- Fly to Lisboa and bus to Lagos (5hrs) bus to Figueira 30 mins or Fly Faro train to Lagos 2hrs bus to Figueira.

The house is surrounded by countryside (Natural Park) in a very quiet location, but is only 15 mins walk away from Salema - a small fishing village with bars and resturants. Lagos, the main town, is 20 mins away by car and there is a bus about 10 times a day.

I enjoy mountain biking and would happily guide people around the fantastic tracks here after hours, borrowing our bikes. This location would suit a mountain biker or surfer (best if surfers have there your own car), to enjoy your free time to the maximum, most of the beaches are wild (without cafes or houses etc).

The school offers free craft classes each week, which you can attend. Its also possible to join in my art lessons too when they occur. Yoga lesson at the yoga deck, there is a donation of about 7 euros required if you wish to attend as I am not the teacher.

Our first workaway shared a number of our family activities, inc Swim lessons, knitting lessons and mountain biking.
Our second enjoys the cafes and beach in Salema and weekend trips out with the family.
Our third meditation evenings and walks in the countryside.
Our four created a art video with other workerways creating a harmonised backing track etc. Our fifth organised there time by the tides and surf conditions for 6 weeks, they were so fabulously surf crazy as well as, mt biking before breakfast, now thats keeen..... wood carving over looking the ocean.... and playing the musical saw on the beach at full moon! most of our work aways have stayed longer than expected and some have then returned again and again....

Please contact me so that I can make explore each others needs/expectations and share experiences, when you are committed to coming please send me your arrival dates/times. Please try to be committed to your dates as best you can, and update me with any changes in your plans as soon as possible. I need to arrange other volunteers if you cancel your trip and need to know asap.

I hope that you find this info helpful and please feel free to ask any questions regarding volunteering here with my family.

    Regards Rosalind
