    Description

Work in our Food Truck and live on our farm.

During the summer months (May - September/October) we run the Hengifoss Food Truck at one of East Iceland's most known natural attractions, Hengifoss Waterfall. Here we sell all homemade food, such as traditional Icelandic lamb meat soup fresh waffles after my grandma´s recipe, our very own homemade GÚDD ÍS ice cream, as well as Iecland´s only sheep milk ice cream from our other business branch, Iceland's only sheep milking business. We produce high quality foods from our sheep milk, mainly the ice cream that we sell in our food truck. What we serve is made in our production kitchen on our sheep farm. The production is run by me, Ann-Marie. I also own the food truck and will be your boss.

The business is a micro start up and family run. We are located in rural East Iceland. The sheep farm is owned and run by my father in law, a 77 year old warm hearted and open minded farmer. He owns the sheep and I milk them for my micro start up. I myself am originally German and have been living here for 8 years. My partner, the farmer's son is a local journalist. The farm is right next to the so called Wilderness Center and located in stunningly beautiful natural surroundings on the edge of Northern Europe´s biggest wilderness and very close to one of East Iceland’s most popular natural tourist destinations - the Hengifoss Waterfall. A paradise for hikers and nature lovers.

We are looking for a full time staff for the food truck who will also occasionally help me out in production.
The job is from May to end of September with an option to extend to October if we agree.

You will be responsible for preparing and serving simple food (waffles, soups and our mostly prepackaged ice cream) to our customers and all the payments. You keep track of stock and need to keep the truck clean.
    Requirements:
Experience as front of house in the restaurant business and some food preparation experience. Nothing complicated (see above).
High and positive service attitude towards the customers.
Fast working and good at keeping oversight and organizing your work place, when it gets really busy in the main months (July and August mainly).
Good English is a must, any other language is a plus.
    Driver's license is a must!
Physically fit to lifting and carrying things to and from the car/truck, and for being on your feet during the work day.

    General notes:
We are offering paid job(s)! We do only want applications if you can stay the whole time May - September/October.
We can provide a housing (independent studio apartment) on the farm and a car. Details to be discussed in interviews.
You choose how much you want to join our farm life apart from work. You can experience and participate in all sheep related farming activities in your free time if you wish. May and June are lambing season and full of life of little lambs for example.
Living on the farm is desired by us for logistics with the food truck.
You should speak fluent English. Any other language is a plus as we have guests from all around the world at the food truck.
We only take applications from EU/Schengen-citizens. If you are form outside the EU/Schengen, only apply if you already have a valid work visa for Iceland.
You should be comfortable around farm animals and dogs (Border Collies).
Be ready to be in a remote location and be open to flexible day planning as things can always change on a remote Icelandic farm due to weather and other unforeseen things.
We are located next to the Icelandic Wilderness Center, and there we can easily connect you with other people and foreigners for free time activities.
    No applications from couples please!

You can choose how much you want to join our family farm life apart from work time. The owner of the farm is a 77 year old warm hearted and open minded man who only speaks Icelandic. He is used to foreigners being around and so are we. We enjoy the cultural exchange also from your side and learning about your background. I am a German immigrant myself and came here 10 years ago- so I also know what it is like as a foreigner and can help in communication. You will get to experience a very authentic rural east Icelandic sheep farm life for sure! We can provide you with a car (financial aspect of that will be discussed in interviews) and there are many many things to explore close to us. Our area is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers.
We are part of one of Icelands’ smallest independent communities but in direct connection to East Icelands' biggest town (ca 3000 people) Egilsstaðir. Our neighbor runs the Wilderness Center and there too are other international workers during summer that you can get to know if you want. There are community BBQs during summer and much more. You will be seen as part of our family and invited to join whenever you want! You can get the opportunity to learn about Icelandic sheep and sheep farming which is a very unique way of sheep farming around the world as Icelands’ sheep roam free during summer after lambing season and this has many implications for their care.
We encourage you to learn at least basic Icelandic if you seize the opportunity. We also love to learn about cuisines from other countries and to give you some insights in to Icelandic traditional foods.
There are two Border Collies on the farm, one is just 6 months old, the other 5 years. They love to play and going for hikes once they get used to you.

The valley itself where we live offers an abundance of hikes and natural sights such as Hengifoss waterfall and Strútsfoss waterfall. There is a good selection of museums and easy access to the famous highlands and hot water springs in our direct surroundings. In Egilsstaðir town you have access to all daily services, several cafes and restaurants and hotels and the geothermal Vök baths. In the fjords there is even more of all this and intriguing gastronomic experiences.
A car can be provided. If you have several days you can explore other areas of the island. Akureryi is about 3 hours drive from us for example. Iceland is known for its wilderness and untouched nature. You will find stunning natural landscapes and sights just by walking out the door!

    Moli (Monello) (1 year)

Border Collie. Moli is our newest addition. He is still in his puppy phase and tries to learn by watching our older dogTobbi a lot. He is friendly and energetic. You can play with him and time will tell his character. He has much self confidence we think.

    Tobbi (5 years)

Border Collie. Tobbi is a very friendly and kind dog. However he had some bad experience with strangers and so he needs maybe a few days before you can pet and play with him - just give him time to get used to you. But once you have been around a few days he will love you and play with you endlessly and he will love you for it!
