    Description

    Hello Workawayers!

My name is Hella, the founder and director of the local organization here on Rusinga Island. in my past years I have managed to work with different volunteers from all around the world. Since I was a teenager, I have always wanted to do something for the community. I built Rusinga CBO 3 years ago at 19. I am now 22. Even if I am a young director and I still have a lot to learn, I want the CBO to become sustainable and to make a real change for people living on Rusinga. That's why I am currently learning about project management in college and I will also do a civic service in France in 2023.

An aim for development to our island's community, led to the creation of the CBO thus bringing members of the community together in the process.

    Problems faced

lack of clean and safe water for drinking
lack of information among our young women
    quality education
as an organization we have managed to identify various problems that our community faces and we are working towards eliminating such problems with time. below are the identified problems
    1) lack of clean and safe water
    2) insufficient talent promotion among the teenagers
    3) a gap in women empowerment
    4) lack of proper education

    about the organization
the organization has been providing local humanitarian support and development of basic needs to a small, but populous island on Lake Victoria, Kenya.

    mission
we are a grassroots NGO focused on improving education conditions, availability of food, access to drinking water, and woman empowerment on our island. We work hand-in-hand to personally help families and various groups on the island in order to help their families thrive for generations to come.

We are primarily looking for travelers with some management skills, networking skills, website experiance ,football experience, environment conservation skills, computer skills and lastly fundraising skills that can help work with and help our community.

Although, we do offer other volunteering opportunities, like permaculture and women empowerment sessions, in case you're looking for some diversity during your time here on the island. Please don't hesitate to contact me directly about our other opportunities, or any questions you may have, about our Island or Kenya in general.
We would like you to help our community in any way you can , and perhaps bring new perspectives on development and drills, coaching, health and fitness, and program operations. We would also appreciate assistance in spreading our fundraising campaign via social media, as we are currently lacking some important resources. We are looking to raise money to support the orphans who are under the organization by supporting them in schools, start for the women income generating activities like materials for making mats and also if we can support our sports academy for the kids by buying them jerseys, field maintenance, and maybe one day down the road, even some cleats for our players.
You will find that our island is incredibly welcoming to foreigners, and that the community will love to work with you. Your involvement will certainly not go unappreciated within our community.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will fully be welcomed into our traditional Kenyan lifestyle. Volunteers share a guest house as the main house, and a private room may be requested depending on the number of volunteers expected. The kitchen and sitting room are shared with the host family, and we provide three home-cooked, authentic Kenyan meals a day which are eaten together with the family members. If you have any special dietary restrictions, please inform us and we will certainly accommodate your needs.
We provide beds, sheets, blankets, mosquito nets, clean water ( we drink treated rain water, which no volunteers around the island have ever claimed to have an issue with) but bottled water is also available to purchase in shops nearby.
As in most of rural Kenyan homes, there is no running water on the compound, which means that we use pit latrines and bucket showers to wash. You are welcome to play with our dogs, Mutami and Bosco. Donkeys, chickens and goats run freely on around the grounds of the compound.
We do not provide internet through Wi-Fi in the compound, but you may buy cheap internet buddles in the next town mbita(closest big town) just over the bridge from the island. You can also find Wi-Fi or internet access in the cafes there, along with almost any store to suit your ne eds. While on Rusinga, we suggest using safaricom SIM cards as they provide the best internet and phone signals across the island, and you purchase more data here on the island in our small shop center (always walkable distance).
We believe you will love it here on our beautiful, simple, and peaceful island. You will be welcomed by all, and will almost certainly see more smiles and waves from the side of the road than you ever have before.
As an organization, we ask that our volunteers pay 5dollars in a day, that will help the host family in buying food.
