I am looking for volunteers to help with the upkeep and maintenance of my place in Dunamon. It was the old dance hall, shop and house. I have converted this into a place for retreat and meditation. I work as a cognitive psychotherapist specialising in Mindfulness Based Psychotherapy. I also teach meditation and Mindfulness based life skills. The centre reflects my practice of Mindful living and is intended to be a tranquil setting. For this reason there is no TV etc.
The main area of help that I am seeking is in the garden, centre and living areas to help maintain and upkeep this. I am often away from the centre due to my work commitments. For this reason I am looking for volunteers who can work on their own without supervision.
Help in the house
The place is set an ideal location for a relaxing break, a retreat or fishing, walking, etc. whilst you are here. It is a short walk from the river Suck and Donamon Castle. It offers a tranquil setting where you can escape from the distractions of modern day life.
If you have no experience in meditation but would like to learn more about this, I am happy to show you some simple meditation techniques if you wish. If you are interested in finding out more about Irish Heritage and Culture, I would be happy to arrange a trip to Rathcroghan Heritage Centre, Castlecoote House, Strokestown Famine Museum or other such places (you would need to pay entrance fees for some of these). I would also be happy to help you arrange some days out during your free time and take you to bus / train stations providing I know in advance and I am available.
I wanted to create a place that is a peaceful and quiet environment, suitable for relaxation and retreat. For this reason there are no TV's, radios, etc.
I am looking for enthusiastic and self-motivated helpers who are able to work on their own (or together with another volunteer). You are welcome to choose a length of time that best suits you (minimum 2 weeks, Maximum 2 months).
I am looking for one or two people at a time to take on a basic 'care-taking' responsibility and would be seeking people with the following skills:
Someone who is skilled and experienced in housekeeping to help with general domestic duties (Cleaning, Ironing etc).
Someone with DIY skills to help with any of the following: General Indoor Maintenance and Repairs, Painting, Plastering, Basic Plumbing and Electrical Work etc. Also general outdoor maintenance and repairs to the exterior of the buildings. (please let me know what areas you are skilled in).
Someone with Groundwork and/or Gardening skills to help with general maintenance of the garden areas (cutting grass, weeding, pruning etc. and the planting out / care of vegetables etc. in our raised beds, polytunnel and vegetable patches.
If you are skilled in more than one of the above areas, please let me know which areas of work you are interested in volunteering for.
Any helpers may also be required to help out in the centre in general when necessary.
The following options are available for helpers:
OPTION ONE - 15 HOURS HELP PER WEEK over 3 to 5 days.
In return I offer accommodation all week (an ideal option for those who want to have maximum flexibility to either have more days off or work fewer hours each day).
OPTION TWO - 20 HOURS HELP PER WEEK over 4 days.
In return I offer accommodation all week and a food allowance of €7.50 per day for each working day of your stay (an ideal option for those who want to be out and about and go off to other areas on their days off).
OPTION THREE - 25 HOURS HELP PER WEEK over 5 days
In return I offer accommodation all week and a food allowance of €7.50 per day of your stay including on your days off as well (an ideal option for those who want to stay fairly local on their days off).
I am happy to negotiate an alternative option of hours for you if you prefer, providing this is done in advance of your arrival.
PLEASE NOTE: All options are offered on a 'self-catering' basis.
PLEASE GIVE DETAILS OF WHAT YOU CAN HELP WITH AND ANY EXPERIENCE YOU MAY HAVE. IF YOU HAVE SKILLS NOT LISTED ABOVE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AS I MAY ALSO BE ABLE TO USE THESE.
The Centre consists of a house, an area for retreat and meditation, outbuildings and garden area. It is in the heart of a rural part of Ireland, a small village called Donamon, which is approximately 15km outside of Roscommon Town. This makes it a great location for a peaceful and relaxed stay, whilst being fairly close to Roscommon town. It is a short drive from a number of great places to visit. There is no public transport from Donamon so you would need a car or bike to travel anywhere that is not in walking distance, although I am happy to give you a lift if we are going into town, etc.
Local shop is approx. 7km and 12km and local pubs are approx. 5km and 10km. Roscommon town is about 15km away and offers: Post Office, Banks, Library, Pubs, Cafes/Restaurants, Supermarkets, Gyms, Pharmacies, Castle, Organic Health and Food Store, Cinema, Leisure Centre with swimming pool. There is no public transport in our village.
Places of local interest:
Donamon Castle, Rathcroghan Heritage Centre, Strokestown House and Famine Museum, Roscommon Museum, Castlecoote House, Elphin Windmill, Claypipe Museum, Roscommon Castle, Black Lake and River Suck, Mote Park, Hudson Bay (where you can get a boat trip down the River Shannon), Athlone town, Arigna Mining Experience, Kings House in Boyle and Carrick on Shannon with its marina.
If I am going into Roscommon Town, Carrick-on-Shannon or Athlone, etc., you are welcome to join me if you wish.
Feel free to ask as many question as you would like. We hope to hear from you soon.
