Description
Hi, Workawayers!
We are a non-profit school that helps street children at risk of becoming street kids. In Guatemala there are many child workers and abandoned children, as well as many who are in extreme poverty. A large part of our funding is from our tourism trekking company based in Xela.
At the moment we have in our school around 180 students from the age of 6 to 15. And 95% of whom are indigenous (known as Kíche). Apart from 7 permanent teachers and 2 psychologists that are currently working with us, we would like to have some volunteers to come help us with our students if you could be committed for at least 2 months.
We need volunteers to be able to speak an intermediate level of Spanish, as English is not widely spoken here. However, if you are not confident in your Spanish, there are loads of Spanish school in the area that provides very cheap lessons! You could go onto a Spanish learning tour in the day after school and even choose to homestay with a local family...

Help
We are in need of teacher assistants.
Each of you will be supporting each staff teacher. The working hour will be from 8am to 1pm and you will be helping the teachers with school activities, students' homework and class performance.
Another option would be helping us with afterschool (started from 2pm) activities, e.g. art and craft workshops, theatre, music and singing classes, etc.
You will have to be great with a group of kids(sometimes it could get chaotic!), a good leader and a creative, organized person. Proposals/ new ideas are welcome.
We would also like to hear from you if you have a professional background in Social Work or Psychology.

Accommodation
Sorry due to a limited funding, we are not able to provide any accommodation. We will provide full board only if you could work as a full time(please ask us for details), but we are happy to assist you to look for cheap accommodation. Living in Xela is cheap, so basically US$5 per day will be enough for both of your rent and for food here!
What else ...
In Xela you won't see as many tourists as you'd see compare to some other places here in Guatemala...but being the 2nd biggest city in the country, it is a very convenient place to live and meet people. And there are buses connection to many major destinations if you are interested in visiting other places during your weekends.
