    Description

    Aloha!

Our project is on a 10 acre property located in the Keokea neighborhood of Kula, Maui. Since buying the property in 2014, we have been clearing invasive species and creating new spaces for farming and gardening. We have had Workawayers since September of 2020 and it has been a great experience. Over the past year we’ve cleared new hiking trails, expanded our sheep pastures, built and planted new succulent walls, and planted fruit trees and native species all over the property. Some of our current projects include trail maintenance and expansion, native species planting, landscape maintenance, and succulent wall care. Organic farming comes with a lot of weeding as well!

We are a personally owned agricultural land. We are not selling any products from the property at the moment. The land is in early stages of being overtaken by invasive species. There is no commercial farming or construction being done on this land.

Workawayers most likely to succeed are motivated, eager-to-learn individuals who are comfortable receiving and following directions as well as taking initiative. Workawayers should expect to work Monday through Friday from 8am-1pm (25 hours/week). We can be flexible with scheduling and will occasionally ask for Workawayers to help with a day over the weekend in place of a week day, but prefer to work the same hours as a team to complete projects throughout the week. We ask that Workawayers be flexible and communicate scheduling needs in advance. We are happy to work with you to accommodate as best as possible.

PLEASE REMEMBER! If traveling from out of the country you need to have the proper work visas in place to travel into the US.

If interested in Workawaying with us, please send us the following:
    1. Your background related to farming/landscaping/home care
    2. Any previous Workawayers experience
    3. Any experience you have using power tools (weed whackers, lawn mowers, chainsaws, etc.)
    4. What you hope to gain from Workawaying with us
    5. Anything else you’d like to share

We’d love to share our beautiful ‘aina (and one of the best sunset spots on Maui!) with you!

"We love people that enjoy to cook and clean"

We will still do a couple people at one month. Which is our minimum stay. But we're trying to find more people that are interested in three months or more.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Workawayers will have the opportunity to experience a lesser-seen side of Maui on the gorgeous upcountry slopes of Haleakala Mountain away from the typical hustle and bustle of the more ‘touristy’ Maui. In addition to teaching new skills and techniques related to farming and property care, your host is more than happy to share any insight into Maui and general Hawaiian culture.

We have anywhere from two to six Workawayers at a time on the ‘Mountain,’ but opposed to the other Workawayers tasks (mainly involving gardening, sheep and chicken care, and small projects around the property) we are ideally searching for a couple or two friends to focus on lawn mowing and general landscaping, minor DIY projects and help around the house, etc. The individuals for this position should be okay with less diversity in their work tasks but instead spend most time specifically with lawn care and home maintenance.

There is no commercial farming or construction being done on this land.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

The couple/two friends will stay in an RV trailer with a queen size bed and a futon-style couch. Our renovated shipping container can host up to four trade workers with openable windows and a storage shelf. Workawayers have full access to communal living accommodations, which include an outdoor kitchen/living space, two burner camping stove, grill (which also has its own stove), stainless steel sink, picnic table, hammock, and concrete floor. This space is connected to the bathroom area which includes a flushable toilet, bathroom sink, and hot water shower.

Each week, we place an order for staple goods (proteins including eggs, tofu, beans, nut butters, etc.; grains including pasta, rice, breads, and oats; dairy and alternative dairy products; fruits and vegetables), but Workawayers are encouraged to eat as much from the garden as possible! We are happy to accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences, but please be aware that we can not completely prevent cross-contamination for those with severe allergies.

    What else ...

The bus stop is a 15 minute walk downhill (if you take the shortcut) and steep uphill on the way back. The Maui bus system is great for traveling all around the island, but is usually an all day excursion since the bus only comes every 3 hours. The nearest beach from the property is 35 minutes away, so Workawayers should be okay with spending most of their time upcountry or renting a car/taking the bus to be able to get down and around other areas of Maui.
