    Description

I found my slice of heaven in NZ 6yrs ago…a sea view, an easy 5 minute walk to a beautiful white sanded beach, above a wetlands and bush. I’m on a 1/4 acre section which on arrival was a mown paddock & now it is entirely planted out in natives, exotics, an orchard & no-dig vegetable garden.
I live in a very small house so i put a studio with ensuite on for guests where you would stay and i also have a garden house with a deck & inbuilt seating & table.
Summer/autumn is a time of chopping back the many grasses & bushes I've planted so is when i mostly need help.
However i also work in the bush pulling up muelenbeckia which is a massive vine which smothers native tree fuschia’s in particular & other native trees … my contribution to our precious planet.
I cook all types of food so please NO vegans.
Water is my scarcest resource due to being on tank water & having low rainfall.
I’m also very frugal with power…no sense in squandering our dwindling cheap fossil fuel supply.
I take a strong interest in understanding how all the pieces of the puzzle of the polycrisis we’re in, fit together…the total interconnectedness of everything & the fragile complexity we've created over the past 50yrs.
If you love good conversation, good food, reading & outdoor tasks you’ll love being here.
I love meeting young international people & will make you feel very welcome if you also value the above!
I am 40minutes drive from Dunedin …you’ll need your own car as there is no public transport to Taieri Beach.

    I only speak English.
However i have a ‘Teaching English as a 2nd Language’ qualification so if you would like to improve your English while staying I’d love to help.
I’m interested in ‘degrowth’, understanding ‘the big picture’ regarding the biophysical, energy, materials, polycrisis we’re in globally & wholistic systems like permaculture/regen ag, …so if you're interested in these topics we could have some great discussions.
Pronouncing Maori/NZ place names properly is also important to me so i can help you do so too!

    Help

Help in garden - using hand clippers to cut back native grasses, prune trees is a major task I need help with.

Digging up seedlings …flax, pittosporum, native grasses & planting them in the bush.

Weeding - being rural all sorts of ‘pest’ plants blow in or the seeds are dispersed by birds

Pulling out muelenbeckia is a massive, never ending job i do voluntarily that id love help with … i free its stranglehold on native trees enabling them to grow.

Help collecting kelp from a nearby bay - dragging it up to my car…to then put on garden.

Household maintenance - clearing roof gutters of leaves.
Window washing - main house, studio & garden house.
