    Description

We are running a small hostel (16 beds) in Mwanza, the second biggest city of Tanzania. More than a hostel, it is more a home for travellers, medical students doing internship in the hospital, researchers, etc. In the hostel we like to share time with our guests (playing games, sharing stories, having dinner together...); we create a small family for a time. The hostel has a very easy-going atmosphere with a nice balance between Tanzanian and international culture. The hostel has a cat (king Louis :-)) and some chickens (providing fresh eggs every day). There is a slackline, a pool table, a roof terrace, hammocks, many board games, and a shared kitchen.
We are a young Swiss-tanzanian couple; we like sports, games, people and travelling (through our guests). We don't live anymore in the hostel, but we stay very close to the daily life of the place. One of us (Bashir - the Tanzanian) is a basketball player and painter; Bashir has his small work room at the hostel. The other (Estelle - the Swiss) came the first time in Tanzania in 2015 and works now for a NGO promoting sports in Mwanza.
We have one woman (Sheru) taking care of all the cleaning of the hostel. Also we have a gardener and a watchman for the nights.

Mwanza is a very authentic city (there are few tourists), therefore you can have a real urban African experience. The hostel is located in the middle of a typical Tanzanian area (local shops around, local market, bus station very close...). With Bashir and Sheru, you get the chance to discover the local culture, by joining in family parties and dinners, going to local festivals, and other cultural activities around Mwanza. Estelle can bring you to the sports grounds where you can play sports with local teams (football, basketball, volleyball and netball) as well as introduce you to the NGO work she is doing in the local community. Staying in our hostel will ensure you to get close to the Tanzanian life with daily visits to the market, conversations with neighbours, and the overall feeling of living in your own Tanzanian neighbourhood!
In the hostel itself, you will meet people from all around the world, experiencing a cultural exchange everyday in the interactions with the guests!
Finally, Estelle can provide you 5 hours of swahili lessons, to facilitate your integration into Tanzanian life.

    Help

We look for someone who can help us in the following tasks:
    - Welcoming the new guests (managing the "check-in", organising transport for them from the airport if needed)
    - Advising the guests about the activities to do in Mwanza (also about transport)
    - Buying the fruits for the breakfast (from the Market down the same street, 5 minutes walking)
    - Feeding the cat Louis and the chickens
    - Managing the check-out of the guests (payment )
    - Being at the hostel available between 7am (time when the watchman leaves) and 9am (when Sheru arrives). (doesn't mean you have to be awake every morning, but available if necessary. For instance in case of arrival of new guests).
    - As Sheru doesn't work on Sunday, it might happen that there are small extra tasks for Sunday: sometimes changing the bedsheets for guests arriving on Sunday (though the hostel is rarely full, so in this case you would only need to prepare one or two beds).

You stay in a dorm (with 2 bunkbeds - 4 persons). As the hostel is very rarely full, it is very likely that you don't have to share the dorm with other guests. We always do our best that you can stay alone; we ask you to share your dorm only if we have no other options.
You can use the shared bathroom (separate men and women) which has hot water (solar system on the roof).
You get 2 big bottle of water for free everyday, as well as the breakfast (homemade bread, fruits, coffee, tea...). The lunch and dinner are not include but you can easily cook for yourself in the shared kitchen or go to the local restaurant close by the hostel. For the dinner, it happens often that we cook together with the guests; it is a very friendly moment.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We like to manage this hostel in a very family way. We have small house rules but always stay flexible with our guests. We want them to feel home. Therefore, we look for someone who is open-minded and easy-going, but still conscientious in his tasks. We are very flexible in term of workaway hours, as long as the tasks are done. We like to be as a team and to help each-other. This means that you can have work for only 1 hour but everyday. Or it can happen that there are no new guests for a full week and then you are very free. So the working-hours are very flexible, but will never exceed more than 3 hours per day.
As a Tanzanian-Swiss couple, it is important for us to be open-minded about other culture and ways to live. Our daily life is a balance between 2 "opposite" culture and we believe that we can learn a lot from each-other. We like to appreciate the people how they are without judgment.
