Description
We are a nature loving adventurous couple who have started on the project of a lifetime building our straw bale home in a pristine valley in the Cederberg mountains in the Western Cape of South Africa.
We are a small team and would love the right person or people to come and help out for a few weeks or months. We are ideally looking for people who have experience with building sites, carpentry and power tools etc, some skills are neeeded to help us move along. The days will be filled with following achitecturtal plans with Swain as the project lead. We will be on site all the time and will never hand over tasks to someone if they are not completely confident. We are happy to learn and teach together. Evening and weekends we climb, hike, surf and relax.
Please get in touch if this sounds like the right host project for you.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We often go for hikes and 4X4 drives in the mountain, we enjoy rock climbing and live in the world famous Bouldering Mecca of Rocklands that has a small but varied community of local and international climbers.
Suf missions to the beach when its good, it is a 50 minute drive and both of us have been surfing for many years and enjoy some of the great surf of the west coast.
My husband is a carpenter and a subsea technician who loves to share his knowledge and is always keen to take on new challenges with a bit of help from youtube and a friend. I am a qualified and passionate yoga instructor and health coach who loves to share in my yoga practice and to make delicious food for the hungry hard working mouths. I am always keen on a trail run around the farm, a climbing mission or hike.
We hope to learn from like minded guests what ever amazing skills you can bring to the table!

Help
The help will vary but mainly focused on the practical skills and labour related tasks of building a house, assisting with woodwork, installing and plastering straw bales, painting etc.
We have a full time team employed for the duration of the project so the aim is that the work that you will be doing will be mostly along side my husband and I learning FROM us and WITH as as we go, my husband is a carpenter and we have created many things over the years together but the complete building of our dream home has been the most challenging and rewarding experience yet and we would like to share that with the right people.

Accommodation
We will host guests in one of two guest cottages on our farm, you may be asked to move between the two cottages at time but we will make sure to make the moving as limited as possible if at all.
You may be required to live with one or two guests in the house from time to time as friends of ours will also visit periodically to help us with build.
If you would like a more wild experience, we can set you up for camping at your request! These cottages are usually rented out to farm guests so they conditions are more than comfortable.
3 meals a day or the ingredients for them will be provided, please be flexible that sometimes we will cook meals together or for you and sometimes we will provide ingredients and request that you make some of your own meals. We are mostly Vegan but husband does eat farm eggs and some game meat from time to time. Being Vegan is not a requirement. Being happy to eat plant based majority of the time should be expected.
What else ...
Their is a taxi service from Cape Town to the town 25 minutes away from the farm and we can sometimes arrange rides with friends or family visiting us. It is 3.30 hours from Cape Town.
Once on the farm you will be pretty limited regarding transport unless you have your own car or bike but we will provide a drive to the little town of Clanwilliam at least once a week and it is possible to order stuff online too if you need specific supplies. Although we are in a mountain wilderness, it is not that remote with the nearest pretty stocked town only 25 minutes away by a tar road. Internet is pretty reliable but sometimes slow, fine for mails and social media and can generally handle a video call and netflix/youtube etc. Please note that this is a farm setting so sometimes if services are down it may take a little longer than in the city to get it up and running again.
We live a pretty relaxed lifestyle on the farm, we are happy to hang out but appreciate our privacy in equal measure. We drink the odd beer or glass of wine but are not part animals. Easy going, nature loving peeps looking for some extra hands and smiling faces to lighten the load and have fun doing it.
