    Description

We are Søren (63) and Jytte (56). For the time being we are sort of split between two homes: We used to live on a small organic farm in southern Jutland (Bramming) where we had a big organic garden with vegetables and flowers. But since the area was chosen to become a solar cell/windmill area, we have to move. Therefore we have now bought an old house in the countryside in a beautiful area north of Silkeborg (the central part of Jutland). However, we still rent our old home in a transition period, because Søren still works in the area. Therefore he still spends the majority of his time in Bramming, while Jytte is in Silkeborg most of the time.
You would stay in the house in Silkeborg with Jytte (and one or both dogs most of the time) while Søren will be there too in some weekends.

At the moment we have only taken control of a small part of the garden, but the goal is to be able to grow lots of organic flowers and vegetables again. So your work would be helping in the garden or in the house with cleaning, cooking or baking.

Søren works full time as a gardener at the local cemetery. His interests are running and yoga. He also plays the guitar. (A little too often, some members of the family might say...) His English is quite basic, but he has improved a lot thanks to Workawayers.

Jytte works with gardening at home. She likes to experiment with a lot of different sorts of plants. Especially flowers, chilli and tomatoes. But at the moment she is mainly busy with renovating the new place and bringing the garden back to life... Her hobbies also include reading, sewing and embroidery.

Our kids Iben (24), Emil (28) and Helena (30) have moved out, but you might see them around as well.

The two dogs Frida and Luna are also part of the family. They are very playful and love long walks. We also have a few cats.

There are many wild animals around. Roe deer, hares, foxes and different kinds of birds. If you are lucky you might even see a fox stealing strawberries from your bedroom window.

The place is generally very peaceful and quiet. There isn't much around except fields and animals, so it's probably best suited for people who enjoy slow living.

You will be part of our everyday life as much as you want to. Visitors usually characterize the place as quiet and peaceful. You can learn about organic gardening and practice your English or Danish.

  • Help

    Help

We have a lot of different things you can help with, since our new house is old and needs a lot of fixing up. And of course there is also a lot to do in the garden: cultivating, weeding, planting, watering, harvesting etc.
You can also always help with things like cooking, cleaning and looking after the animals, or maybe you have a good idea for something we did not know we needed help with.

We would like you to work 4 hours, 5 days a week, but the work can be done at any time, so if you would like to work more on some days and have some days off to do your own things that can easily be arranged.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will get your own private bedroom and share the bathroom and kitchen with us.
(We only have a single spare bed but lots of space, so we can accommodate two people if one is willing to sleep on a mattress on the floor.)

You are very welcome to take part in all our meals. We often eat breakfast and lunch separately, so sometimes you will just find something for yourself in the kitchen, but we usually eat dinner together. Almost all of the food is vegetarian, but we have some fish every now and then.

Please note that our dogs live in the house (and the cats come inside sometimes) so if you are not comfortable around animals or allergic to them, this will not be the perfect place for you. (But your bedroom will of course be animal-free!)

The closest bigger town nearby is Silkeborg (18 kilometres away). It has a train station, shops, cafés, museums and everything you will need in day to day life. There is also a smaller town around 9 kilometres away. To get to Silkeborg, you can ride a bike for four kilometres and then take a bus the rest of the way.

The Silkeborg area is known for it's beautiful nature with big forests and many lakes, and it's a popular area for people who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, swimming or mountain biking.

From Silkeborg you can of course also hop on a train to other parts of Denmark. Aarhus (Denmarks 2nd largest city) is around 50 minutes away.

We can pick up you and your stuff at the train station when you arrive and you can borrow a bike to get around. Expect the bike and bus to be your primary form of transportation, as this is how we usually get around ourselves.

During your stay it will likely also be possible to spend a weekend at our old home in Bramming (the Southern part of Denmark), since we still rent it. Bramming is a very small town, but it is close to Ribe, which is Denmarks oldest town with a lot of viking history.

    Profile photo of Frida

    Frida (7 years)

Our Danish-Swedish Farmdog. Very cute when you get to know her, but she can be quite vocal. She is very active and loves long walks and playing, but she also loves to snuggle up under a blanket. She will steal your socks, if you leave them on the floor.

    Profile photo of Luna

    Luna (7 years)

Our black Labrador. She loves food (especially pancakes!), long walks, playing and swimming when it is hot. She is very loyal and likes to stay close to her people. She is usually(!) quite gentle and well mannered.
