Hello, Workawayers! :)
My name is Dejana, but you can call me Dee.
Last summer, I purchased the homestead of my dreams, with the vision of turning it into a tiny self-sustainable place for like-minded individuals—positive, creative-minded people with curious minds and a desire to connect with nature and their fellow humans.
It’s not a large farm—it’s a small property in a secluded part of a village, in the hinterlands of Montenegro’s Boka Bay—high up in the hills, but minutes from the coast. The land is defined by its orchards and garden space, which I’m slowly bringing back to life after many years of neglect—and I’d love for you to be a part of that process.
The long-term dream is to turn this into a peaceful and inspiring creative sanctuary—a creative, functional, and welcoming space for building, making, growing, learning, and gathering in thoughtful ways.
The property is just under 800m², with a small two-storey (30m²) house, a large garage, and another 30–40m² structure I hope to convert into a guest house. Right now, there’s one queen-sized mattress and two pull-out couches in the house, but we can figure out what works best for your sleeping setup. There’s also room for camping—we definitely have the garden space! :)
Meals can be arranged based on what works best for each Workawayer. You’ll need to be comfortable tending to yourself and being alone some of the time, as I split my time between this property and another one in town (Herceg Novi). I’m happy to accommodate all eating styles and dietary restrictions—though please note, we do include sustainably farmed animal products in our meals, so it may not be a great fit for strict vegans.

Montenegro is a Balkan country with rugged mountains, medieval villages and a narrow strip of beaches along its Adriatic coastline. The Bay of Kotor, resembling a fjord, is dotted with coastal churches and fortified towns such as Kotor and Herceg Novi. Durmitor National Park, home to bears and wolves, encompasses limestone peaks, glacial lakes and 1,300m-deep Tara River Canyon. You can swim, sail, kayak, hike, explore ancient towns, monasteries, castles, and fortresses... the list is endless! Please google "Bay of Kotor", "Herceg Novi" (closest town), and "Montenegro", in general. Our property is also only 6km from the Croatian border, and less than 30km to the Bosnian border.
I am a professional techie, an avid reader, musician, artist, handicrafter, aspiring writer, filmmaker, storyteller. If you love connecting with others and engaging in positive and creative, stimulating endeavours, then we'll get along!

I am currently researching permaculture and food forest models... The first order of business would be to design the layouts and come up with a plan of action--there are many existing fruit trees that need to be brought back to their former glory (fig, grape, kiwi, pomegranate, peach, quince, mulberry, orange, olive, the list goes on!) ... last winter we had a wonderful arborist volunteer from Australia prune every tree for optimal health, and now they just need watering and some TLC. We also had a couple of lovely volunteers in the spring help plant a small vegetable garden, which needs tending. I would love to plant more fruit and some choice vegetables. However, I am new to this--so we'd be learning together/from each other! Activities could include anything from doing the strategic tasks (designing/planning), to your basic flower and vegetable garden tasks, fruit care and gathering, to food preparation and preservation, and eventually tending to ducks and bees (which I plan to keep!). The original owner, who built and cared for the property, before he passed away--he produced his own wine, brandy, olives, and did his own hunting in the nearby forests!
In exchange, I can offer room and board, plus local guidance—whether you’re interested in exploring the area, learning about Montenegrin history and culture, picking up some language basics, or discovering hidden gems nearby.
I also bring a mix of creative and professional experience: I’ve worked in tech (UX design and research) for nearly 30 years and am happy to share insight or mentorship in that area. I’m also a musician (singer/songwriter) and love collaborating on music or creative projects. If you’re into film, audio/video production, digital storytelling, cooking, handicrafts (like knitting or crochet), or just enjoy learning new things—I’m always up for exchanging knowledge and ideas. I’m sure we’ll find plenty of shared interests. :)
Montenegro is a special place with a lot to offer--it would be lovely for you to join us on this adventure!
