    Description

We are in the favela Vidigal, a unique human size hostel founded by Léo, a Frenchman who fell in love with Brazil five years ago. After discovering the caring community of Vidigal, he decided to create a welcoming space that connects travelers and locals, offering a glimpse into a different side of Rio beyond the clichés.

Here, you’ll find a true haven of peace nestled close to nature. We have monkeys around, a stunning view of the sea, and a setting that’s all about comfort and connection. It’s a space where you can truly recharge and enjoy the local culture.

As a volunteer, you’ll be staying in a shared room and you’ll help us bring to life our new social project: beautifying the neighborhood streets. We’re working on mural paintings, street cleanups, and even creating a shared community garden. This is a chance to have a positive impact and to immerse yourself in the rich, artistic, and friendly atmosphere of Vidigal. We are totally opened to all initiatives from you, don’t hesitate to tell about your skills and ideas for the place!

Our team speaks Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French, and we offer a warm, hybrid space that’s not a big hostel factory, but also not a private hotel—just a genuine place to exchange, rest, and experience the real heart of the community.

We look forward to welcoming you!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

At the Casa and Vidigal, you’ll dive into a blend of languages, arts, and human connections.

Language exchange: You’ll get to practice your Portuguese with locals, switch to English or French with fellow travelers.

Artistic exchange: Vidigal is a hub of creativity, and you’ll have a chance to soak up that artistic vibe. Whether you’re joining street art projects, sharing your own creative skills…. It’s about art as an exchange.

Meeting and sharing: This is also a human adventure between the host, volunteers, and guests. Think of it as themed evenings, shared conversations, and living moments together. Basically, we’re creating a space where everyone adds their own little piece to the cultural and human mosaic.

And moreover, it’s also about discovering the real daily life of a true favela in Rio de Janeiro. You’ll see the authentic rhythm of the neighborhood and understand what makes it unique, beyond the clichés.

At the Casa, our social project is all about weaving stronger ties between our place and the Vidigal community. Here, you have the opportunity to create and dive into artistic, eco-friendly, and cultural activities in the Casa, and the streets around.

What kind of tasks are we talking about?
    • Street beautification: painting murals, creating colorful street art, adding fun urban decor, and a bit of creative street signals.
    • Community garden: setting up small green spaces, planting and caring for little urban gardens together.
    • Clean-up and shared spaces: organizing small collective clean-up days.
    • Media and storytelling: snapping photos, shooting videos for social media, helping out with our website, and sharing the local vibe.
    • Community life and events: helping host gatherings, themed evenings, movie nights, workshops, shared meals—anything that brings locals, volunteers, and travelers together.

We’re super open to your unique skills and ideas too! Anything that sparks creativity, fosters exchange, and brings pride to the neighborhood is welcome.

The big idea: be part of a collective movement that makes the community of the Casa and Vidigal more beautiful, vibrant, and connected.

It’s a great spot if you want to work on your own projects or just have a comfortable place to chill and connect.

In short, it’s a cozy and welcoming environment where you can feel at home while also meeting new people and sharing experiences and enjoy the connections with the nature.
