Have you ever dreamed about waking up in the middle of the jungle, surrounded by screaming monkeys? Or going swimming with pink dolphines? This dream can turn into reality at this beautiful reserve, in the middle of the amazonian jungle.
I am James. I grew up in Santa Sofia, an indigenous community close to my reserve. 3 years ago I started building some cabins, so I'd be able to open up this magical place, where people can connect with the nature around them and get to know the indigenous traditions.
The reserve Tucuchira is a family and ecotouristical project - started with the idea to offer a kind of tourism which cares about the interaction with nature and the cultural exchange. This legally built place is located close to the the indigenous community of the Ticuna Tribe in the colombian Amazon. This project of rural development generates work directly and indirectly via the offered activities, which are always realized by natives with a wide, indigenous knowledge of the jungle. Additionally, the provided form of tourism focuses on ecological responsability - trying to raise awareness with tourists and the indigenous communities - concerning the topic of the importance of respect of the jungle and the preservation of the indigenous cultures and traditions.

Yo me llamo James.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

During the tours you will get to know the jungle and the animals within (Everyday we are visited by some monkeys in the reserve - you can feed them out of your hands if you want). Also, you learn about the medical plants. You will have a lively experience of the jungle during the day, as well as at night.
In the Amazon river you can go swimming with the pink dolphines and enjoy the most beautiful sunsets at it's beaches.

During your stay you'll be in contact with the indigenous people of the Ticuna tribe and you'll learn about their culture, their beliefs and their lifestyle. We want you to feel like part of the familiy. You can also share your thoughts and experiences with them. It is important to listen and to learn from eachother - an exchange.
You will eat traditional food during your stay - meaning mostly rice, fish or chicken, lentils and plantil.

When you are not working you can leave to explore Leticia, Puerto Nariño (a close village), the monkey island and a lot more places. If I have time I will join you and we go with the boat from the reserve.

Vas a comer comdida tradicional - significa generalmente arroz, pescado o pollo, lentejas y plátano.

    Help

I need help with administration work and social media (Facebook, Workaway, Instagram, Booking, Tripadvisor, Trivago and Emails). This kind of help means that we go two times a week by boat from the reserve to Leticia, so that we can create schedules and update the webpages.
The knowledge of English is required, since you should help with the tourists. I don't speak English, nevertheless I want the tourists to feeel comfortable and warmly welcomed. If necessary you need to translate the tours into the jungle or to rhe Amazon river. You should have really good English skills, but basic Spanish is fine
Additonally, I would love if you shared some ideas for the reserve and the tours with me. I am always trying to develop and improve the reserve

The work schedule is quite flexible. The idea is that you help 25 hours a week, but those times can always vary, depending on high or low season

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

For now you'd sleep in a shared bedroom in a rustic cabin. You will share your room with the tourists (max. 7) who will arrive, if there aren't any it will be like having a room for yourself.
We don't have electricity in the reserve (so we won't bother the animals and have the ability to see the stars from a platform we constructed), but in the Community (20 minute walk) you can charge your phone or ebook. If you're lucky you can access the Internet with data from there, but it's better if you use the wifi in Leticia. Enjoy the possibility to disconncet a little and gain a new experience :)
Toilets and showers work with buckets and rainwater
Food will be completly provided. There is no need to cook by yourself. You will eat traditional indigenous food. In the morning fruits or Yuca, Lunch and dinner consist of rice, fish/chicken lentils and plantil. If you want some choclate or chips you can buy them at a small store in the community
