Help wanted at a vacation rental / ecolodge in Anchorage Alaska.
Primary work includes cleaning, yard work and being creative.
Depending on season, other projects available include tending to gardens, permaculture projects, composting, recycling and walking/feeding pets. We’re putting in orchard and perennial gardens, building a composting toilet, and other things.
I ask 20-25 hours of help each week in exchange for housing and food, usually between 9am -1pm, which means you have time to go exploring, make friends, get a part time job, etc.
I'm looking for someone who works hard, pays attention to detail and can handle decisions and responsibility. I'm just one guy. I can teach quite a few things, but I don't know everything and can't spend a lot of time micro-managing. It's a plus if you have permaculture knowledge, gardening, cooking and guesthouse operations. I'm all about fair exchange. We are always looking to improve our experience!
The town and project favor someone who has a driver's license. One person, potentially two. The full time in summer and do some fishing and sightseeing trips, so you'll have the responsibility of watching the house from time to time while I am gone.
Program: 1 month or longer. You can try it out for a few weeks to make sure you like it. You should have travelers insurance and enough money to get to the next place you want to go. You are usually open to do what you want after, but the cleaning schedule is random, so you have to plan your time accordingly.
The responsibilities of the helper here are first and foremost to keep up the domestic appearance of the place, keep it well stocked, and coordinating with owner and maintenance personnel to ensure it continues to function properly.
When a supervisor "checks-in" with you during your work-trade, your performance will be evaluated on the following criteria:
~The level of energy, care, attention to detail and productivity during work
~The overall level of efficiency and cleanliness maintained on average
~How complete and thorough, according to checklist and hotel industry standard
~How efficiently you handle problems and communicate needs with host and guest
The above criteria will be applied to these primary responsibilities:
~Cleaning and organizing rentals and common areas visible to guests
~Increase visual appeal, value and showing care for our guests needs
~ Turn-over cleaning between guests, including cleaning and restocking
~Keeping supplies stocked, organized and accounted for
~Acknowledging guest needs, responding with urgency & optimism
~Notifying owner of weekly purchasing needs
~Notifying owner and maintenance personnel of needed repairs
~Feeding/watering plants and animals
~Daily and weekly cleaning checklists
~Being observant of overall condition and needs of homestead
~Suggesting ideas to improve efficiency, reduce cost and
~Recruiting, screening and training new workstay person
~Spot-checking new trainees' work when they first start out
These are the primary responsibilities/duties required by this workstay. All other activities are secondary, and based on the talents and skills of the worker. Any extra projects the workstay is interested in participating will be discussed and evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

You will have the opportunity to interact with others, guests, the host and perform a variety of tasks relating to running a guesthouse, gardening, house sitting. You will also get to experience Alaska with Anchorage as a home base. This area of Anchorage has all the feel of a remote setting, but you can still go out and meet people, do things and have all the conveniences of home.

The schedule is primarily 1100-1500 throughout the week. We try to schedule days off a week in advance, and you get two days off, but they aren't always together and they aren't on the weekend. Luckily, those that can keep ahead of the cleaning game and an eye on the schedule and the weather will be able to plan trips in advance. The more efficient and organized you are while working, the more time you will get off

Anchorage has 400,000 people, so there is plenty to do socially. We have a sweet new rock gym, state-of-the art yoga studios, and a variety of things to do in order to stay sane during the long nights a, whether summer or winter, such as theaters, restaurants, night clubs, etc. The house is in a residential area of the city, and you can be at any of these within 20 minutes on a the worst traffic days.
