The school was founded in 1994 by a group of local people from Chiang Khong district, Chiang Rai province, to advocate for the conservation of natural resources in Chiang Khong and create a field of collaborative learning within the community.
Local students, village leaders, village folk, governmental organizations, educational institutions, private organizations, and charity/social organizations all frequent the school in order to learn techniques to manage natural resources and surroundings.
We aim to protect the the ecosystem of the Mekong River and the culture of local fishermen in the Mekong Basin from the threat of economic development. This development does not take into consideration the local ecology, history, or local culture, and since local people have not been involved in the process, the nearby communities will face unavoidable harm if implemented.
Help with Computers / internet
Volunteers have the chance to become immersed in the local culture of Northern Thailand and will gain a deep understanding of the local culture along with environmental opportunities and threats to the Mekong. Additionally, the school is a very relaxed, fun place to help.
We are seeking a volunteer to create a website for the school and teach us how to maintain it. We'd like something simple but professional, such as a WordPress site with a paid template. Volunteer must have prior experience creating websites and should be skilled with computers in general. Knowledge of Photoshop and Excel will also be useful.
We ask for at least a three-month commitment and envision the first month including installation and testing of the website. The second and third month will likely focus on changing and adapting the site while teaching us how to use it.
In the longer term, we also have an idea for an app where tourists, students, etc. can go to a certain point in the Mekong, take a photo at that location, and then see a pre-recorded video explaining all about the area. If you have any experiences with creating apps, that would be a plus!
Our volunteer can choose to live with the family of the one of the school's leaders in their own room, or in a hut at the School.
Meals are included and drinking and smoking is allowed.
Volunteers will have a bike and motorbike to use.
There are pets at the school and a two-year old at the school leader's house.
The school is right on the Mekong River across from Laos with beautiful views and a very relaxed atmosphere. It's a great place to hang out and play music by the river. We enjoy growing vegetables and fruits in our garden.
The Chiang Khong is a small, beautiful town. Volunteers can explore the mountains, temples, rice fields and other scenery during time off. There is also a gym nearby and Muay Thai lessons are available in the area, as well.
