We are B&B, an NGO located in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, South India and we belong to the congregation of the daughters of Mary (We welcome anyone of any faith, or none...). We are operating an 8 bedroom B&B as a means of generating funds to pay for our charitable projects. Our guests are a diverse group of people coming from all walks of life, and all parts of the globe. The overwhelming response from our guests is that they find peace and tranquility at our B&B, and they are happy that their money has gone 100% towards the charitable projects of the sisters. Workawayers are embraced by the sisters and when they leave, it is with a tear in their eye, because they have participated in something genuinely worthwhile, and they have made a contribution towards the betterment of the poor and disadvantaged people of South India.
We run a small farm on our campus, and we grow many exotic fruits and vegetables, which nearly all end up on the dinner table.
We operate a responsible campus. We do not litter, we recycle plastic bottles, and we have a strong sense of civic pride in our place.
Help with running the B&B
We have recently redecorated and opened a Hostel and a B&B respectively, because we wish to make ourselves as financially independent as possible. We need people to come and help us run/supervise them, specifically, up to International standards of cleanliness and service, as well as some help to promote them through other channels than the on-line booking systems that we are already collaborating with.
Therefore, we are looking for people (Individuals, couples, work-partners, etc… anyone is welcome) who are able to self-manage, who like social/human contact, preferably with some experience in the Hotel/Catering industry [although, if you have a great dose of common sense and have been managing anything at all before, we are sure you will be able to help us, regardless of your previous experience] and who like to take on a B&B of 8 rooms.
We would prefer if you could stay with us for at least 6 weeks.
Although we do not have an age restriction, either high or low, we need to emphasise that people who come here to help, do so to make a difference in the lives of those more disadvantaged than us. This is not a beach resort, or a party location. Our preference is to have people with a strong sense of human and civic responsibility, and also a strong sense of commitment and staying power. If you are on a world tour, and looking for a place to sleep and be fed for a couple of weeks before you move on to your destination, then you are not the person we want.
Help with Computers/ Internet
This is an all Indian environment - the three Sisters managing the convent and the NGO to the Convent staff. The only non-Indians are the Workawayers and the B&B/Hostel guests.
Workawayers have a unique opportunity to engage with people from all over the world, to share stories and experiences, and to broaden their world view.
Your number of hours of work will be generally 5 hrs, 5 days per week, depending on the movement of guests. Some days less (or none at all), some more. You will mostly control your own working hours, using your own initiative and common sense.
You will need to speak excellent English, and be friendly, outgoing, and enjoy ongoing chat with a wide variety of people who pass through our gates.
You will need above average computer skills, and you will need to be willing to learn to operate a basic system for running the B&B.
Although you will not be asked to participate in the charitable works (other than to efficiently run the B&B reception), you will need to demonstrate an empathy with the ethos of the enterprise, and be willing to engage with guests about the charitable works that we do.
We offer you an en-suite-style bedroom, bathroom with Western-style toilet, terrace with sea views (whenever possible) and sunset views…
Equally, we provide you with three home-made authentic, mostly South-Indian, meals.
It is important for the potential volunteers to know that no alcohol or drugs may be consumed within the Convent compound......... Just think of this as a health spa!
Explore Kanyakumari, Nagercoil, Kovalam Beach in Kerala (some 2-3 hours from here), etc... or the nearby secluded beach coves (approx. 1.5 Km ).
Thiruvantaphuram/Trivandrum, Kerala is the closest airport some 110 km away. The closest airport in Tamil Nadu is Madurai approx. 250 km away.
There is a railway station (Kanyakumari Cape) in Kanyakumari approx 1.5 km away from us (from the station you can take an auto rickshaw which will cost you around 60 rupies).
The bus station is some 500 meters from the convent.
The closest bigger town is Nagercoil24 Km away and there is a regular local bus connection with it from Kanyakumari bus station.
Nature around Kanyakumari is beautiful, for example on the road to Nagercoil you will pass many ponds with lotus flowers, rice paddies, coconut groves and banana plantations, all that with a view of Western Ghats in the background. Authentic, working, fishing communities abound along the coast here. Very colourful and exciting to watch them launch out into the surf.
There is a large Meditation Centre on the way to Nagercoil.
This is a predominantly Christian part of India.......white 'picture book' churches around every corner.
