Description
My name is Hagen and I travel almost exclusively. I divide my time between the United States, Canada, and wherever my most recent travel destination is.
As far as my profile goes, I bought an abandoned house in Nagasaki, Japan. While it is in mostly good condition it does have a few quirks which you’ll see after reading my profile.
Nagasaki is an amazing place to visit for many reasons and I hope that you’d consider visiting. Some of the many reasons to check out Nagasaki are:
- beautiful beaches nearby
- world class hiking including connections to the Kyushu nature trail
- top 3 night view in the world
- one of the top onsens in Japan
- many delicious foods like ramen, tonkatsu, and champon among many others
- lots of international visitors year round
- amazing cultural monuments and tourist attractions including the Dutch slope, Dejima wharf, first bowling alley in Japan, atomic bomb memorials and parks, churches, and more

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
This is a traditional Japanese home in a very traditional and aging Japanese neighborhood. You would be exposed to a much different pace of life and way of living that you otherwise would as a visitor to Nagasaki. Many opportunities exist to practice your Japanese and be involved with the local community.

Help
I’m looking for a person or couple who want to spend a little time keeping up with my house while exploring Nagasaki and the surrounding areas. Some of the jobs you might be expected to fulfill include the following:
- cleaning and tidying up all the areas of the house (kitchen, bathroom, living rooms, sleeping area)
- washing clothes or sheets
- gathering up leaves and debris outside (very minimal)
- potentially looking for new furniture or appliances
- if a skilled Workawayer were to apply and had ideas of ways to improve the house for future use this would be a great asset and would make me very likely to host.
Essentially I just want my house to be lived in while I am away and would rather offer it to someone looking to explore rather than just have it sit unused and unappreciated.
The neighborhood is very quiet and the workaway would thus be expected to be respectful of the neighbors

I would greatly appreciate any opportunity to improve my Japanese. Japanese Workawayers are welcomed
Accommodation
My house is simple yet adequate
There are many attractions nearby including stadium city, cocowalk mall and movie theater, atomic bomb parks a short bus ride away, Nagasaki station less than 30 min walking, center of Nagasaki close including the hamanomachi shopping arcade as well as Chinatown. There’s a lot more that I can’t even remember right now
Some other things to know:
- Food is on your own
- if you come in the summer and want to run the ac I may ask for compensation for that as it gets expensive quickly
- I have a traditional Japanese bathing area (stool with faucet) but the water heater does not work (opportunity for skilled help here) so there is either cold water showers or you can bring water from the kitchen. So it’s a little bit inconvenient. There is an onsen very close by though
- it’s 169 stairs up to get to my house so you’ll be in shape if you stay but also that’s why I have a beautiful view.
