Great Barrier Island is absolutely stunning & is completely off the grid. You will have the opportunity to experience living off-grid in a sustainable environment. We collect our own water, generate our own power & grow some of our own veg, we also try to bake as much as possible. We fish & dive for our own seafood & where possible eat locally sourced meat. The island has a strong community vibe & if you spend any length of time on the island you will get the chance to see & experience this.

  • Help

    Help

We are looking for someone that is ready to dive in & help out with our 3 happy & energetic young children - someone that is happy to do housework & confident with childcare. There is always something that needs to be done so someone that can use their own initiative is key. We would love help around the house with basic chores such as washing dishes, helping with laundry & general cleaning, as well as a bit of time spent in the garden eg. weeding the veggie garden, occasionally tidying the lawns. We would really love someone who would be confident to prepare one family meal a week & also someone capable of having the children 2 days a week while Beth is at work as well as occasionally babysitting on a week night.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will have your own ‘sleepout’ seperate from the house, basic but comfy, complete with Double bed, space to store clothes & belongings, and a desk. You would share our bathroom & toilet facilities & dine in our home for dinner. We will provide a nice hot evening meal, as well as food for breakfast & lunch that you are welcome to help yourself to, and teas & coffee.
We love to cook & eat a balanced & healthy diet but would struggle to cater for any special dietary requirements.
Note: groceries are expensive on the island so we encourage you to bring a selection of snacks or favourite luxury items with you so that you have what you need/ want eg. Sanitary products, specific toiletries, chocolate or any other special vices!

  • What else ...

    What else ...

There is so much to do & see here on the island, from bush walks to pristine beaches, awesome local hangouts including cafes & bars, where you will have the chance to meet some of the colourful & caring locals, we also have some brilliant yoga teachers here that offer weekly classes.
Great Barrier Island has recently been awarded 'International Dark Sky Sanctuary' status so if you make the time to venture outside & stargaze at night you will no doubt be blown away.
William is often out fishing, so if you want to learn how to fish or already know how & want to help catch dinner then there may be the opportunity for you to do so, if the tide & timing works out.
It is an easy 5 minute walk to local amenities including Irish pub, Shop, café & stunning beach from where we live. People often hitchhike up and down the island, a cheap and easy way to immerse yourself in island lifestyle and culture if you feel you want to explore further. There will also be a mountain bike made available for use to explore the surrounding area, as well as a paddle board & boogie board if getting out on the ocean is what you like to do.
While we love meeting new people & welcome you whole heartedly into our home we do also need some time & space to ourselves in the evenings. You will see that our daily routine is pretty full on & we don't get many opportunities to relax during the day, so our evenings are very precious! We have tried to create a really comfortable space for our guests & hope that you will enjoy some time out for yourself too.
