… read more keep me busy during the day, but it was perfectly manageable and the rota ensures that everyone did a little bit of all the chores (laundry, cleaning, reception, etc.).
The hostel itself is beautiful, located just a two minute walk from the sea and in the heart of Strandhill which is a small, but very busy little surf village. Despite being small, there are some great pubs, restaurants and coffee places to go to. It is also located a short distance from Sligo and you also have the surf town Donegal further up the coast. Living at the hostel was comfortable, it is well kept, the rooms and toilets for staff were clean and comfortable, and the kitchen space is perfect and always encouraged big group meals. As a vegetarian, I felt the food we had always suited my diet and there was always plenty of food available to make some great food.
In terms of surfing, we were always able to join a lesson for free after we had completed our work for the day or if we had the day off. All the instructors are amazing and Strandhill is the ideal place to learn. And if you are more experienced, on a good day you can get a solid day of great waves. This place is perfect if you are trying to learn this incredible sport.
Finally, the people. Zuhe the manager is an absolute legend. He is so friendly and kind, but runs a very efficient and tight ship which is key for a busy hostel and surf school like this. He always makes sure everyone is comfortable and always made me feel prepared for the tasks I had to do, despite coming to the hostel with little experience. His choice in staff means that the rest of the team will always be amazing. Because of working here during the peak year of covid, I saw a lot of people come and go, but we always made a solid, fun and loving little team. Expect to meet a lot of people from all over the world, all different ages and backgrounds and leave Strandhill with friends for life!
Overall, I would recommend this workaway to anyone who is looking for an unforgettable experience. As long as you are friendly, chilled, willing to work and enjoy surfing, I can't see anyone finding this experience short of amazing. I am so lucky to have relatives in Sligo so I can keep coming back and annoying Zuhe forever.

This was my first workaway experience and it couldn‘t have been better! Marianna and Zuhe run a surfschool, hostel and a lodge next to the sea. We chat, we played good music, we made and enjoyed good food together, made BBQs, watched shooting stars wrapt in blankets on the beach, went hiking and surfing together, visited some cool spots nearby, we played boardgames, played football, enjoyed good movies and watched beautiful sunsets! .. Wonderful experience., it was my first workaway and it couldn't have gone any better!
I have spent there more than 1 month. People were great, we have celebrated Christmas and NYE together as a family and there was a "community" relaxed atomosphere. The job in that period of time wasn't that hard but generally is really fair and easy to learn.

It was really tough to leave this place for me after spending two incredible months there.
The hostel has an excellent location with a mind-blowing sea view and the bests sunsets I've ever seen. It's a great area to visit and there's plenty to see and do!

… read more thing is to have the service done right, after that you are free to enjoy it. The work mainly consisted of housekeeping, cleaning, laundry, and reception.
Zuhe, the manager is such a fair person, quite flexible, and willing to help us if any trouble comes up. Always polite and patient to teach and willing to help the crew. Apart from the professional excellent side, he is a good friend. Often organizing barbecues and concerned to keep everyone happy and good vibes in the staff.
Michael (the owner) is very kind, funny, friendly, with a huge heart.
I was lucky to work with an excellent team (of which I made many friends) selected by Zuhe. Working with a crew of people from about 10 different nationalities was a unique experience. Priceless.
I had never surfed and I had the opportunity to learn this amazing sport by joining surf lessons.
After a while, Zuhe authorized me to go surfing by myself giving me the freedom to use all the equipment for free. (wetsuits, boots, and surfboards).
I can't recommend this place enough!

Thanks to Zuhe also for giving me the freedom to recycle some furniture and redecorate a little, it is appreciated that the ideas are accepted and carried out.
Thanks for making it so comfortable in the day to day with the tasks, the work time is very light and as soon as you realize you are done and the whole day is ahead! Strandhill is a nice and cozy place with mountains and the sea really close. They facilitate all meals a day also and it is great to share recipes with colleagues and eat in good company.

I stayed here for 4 weeks last Summer (sorry for the very late feedback by the way) and I can not recommend this place enough. I just had an awesome time. We were a large group of volunteers and it never got boring. The work itself is not hard and we had a lot of free time to go to the next pub, visit Sligo, watch movies in the common room, do

As volunteers, we could join the surf lessons for free and practise whenever we had the time. I enjoyed being a part of the team really much, it was a unique and unforgettable experience. Amazing experience! This was the first time I tried workaway. I stayed in the hostel for almost 3 weeks. in hindsight, I would have stayed much longer. … read more place. The other workawayers are amazing and open-minded people, with them I shared some great experiences.
The areas near the hostel hide some cool spot and places to discover. Usually, the other volunteers and the staff advise you on what to do, to see and avoid.
Talking with the guests of the hostel is an important part of the experience.
The work usually starts at 11.00 and finish at 2.30 but depends on how many guests arrive at the lodge and at the hostel.
You have enough free time to enjoy the day and have fun despite the work.
For the meal you can cook on your own whatever you want using the ingredients in the staff’s fridge. The opportunity to learn surf is a huge plus of the experience. If you are a beginner (like me) you can attend some lesson, if you are skilled you can go on your own

When she arrived we had a really cool group of workawayers, italians, germans, ausies, irish, spanish and was beautiful to see how all of them turned into a beautiful family. Hannah apart from being super nice and fresh, she is a great chef because she is german with greek background so when she cooked I always stayed for dinner.
I highly recommend her for any kind of job on workaway because i know anything she does, she will do it super good.
As well she came here without knowledge in surf and when she left she was nearly a pro 😋

Where should I start.

Across the street is a super nice pub with very good music and pizza and other nice food places, and around the corner is a lovely coffee shop, called shells.
Every sunday there is a super nice market 20 minutes walking distance at the airport, with good quality food, coffee, handmade honey, nice tee, clothes and other stuff.
Another pub called the dunes is also not too far away, I liked this one even more - it's smaller, also always good music and atmosphare, and every monday they have an open mic, wich is always good fun.
You have a lot of live music everywhere and everybody is into music. Young and old.
The work is not too hard, it's always 21 hours per week, and when it really happens that you need to work a little more, cause there's too much to do, you get your hours back.
So you have enaugh time beside work to go for nice walks, go surf, go to sligo (the next bigger city), go with the bus or hitchhike to see other places, play football, read, what ever!;)
The normal work consists of cleaning shifts( making beds and clean) and reception shifts and sometimes other stuff like gardening or paint etc...
You can go in all the surf lessons and once you are good enaugh, they let you go alone.
There is everything to eat in the staff fridge what you need and even more, we cooked loads of super nice meals.
Zuhe the manager, is a funny and cool person and in my opinion really the perfect manager, wich is not an easy job.
It's really and honestly important to him, that everybody is happy, and that it's a nice vibe in the hostel and he cares.
Of course he wants the volunteers to do a proper job, and is checking everything - he is super fair, and when we had a lot to do, he helped us cleaning, even though he had enaugh managing and paper work to do already.
Also with most of the other workawayers it was a really nice crew, and in my whole time there I met amazing and super special people and charakters, who have a big place in my heart now. We had crazy, funny, deep, class experiences together and I'm gratefull to have met them.
I started to really fall in love with surfing there in Irland and now I keep on traveling and want to improve and learn as much as I can about surfing! So thanks, thanks, thanks for showing me!
