Welcome to our humble chocolate dockhouse!
We were inspired by the plethora of edible wonders that grow in the tropical region and made it our purpose to cultivate, transform, and share the juiciest pleasures that nature provides with the absolute minimal of refined or industrial ingredients entering our kitchen.
We fixed up an old house on the riverfront with amazing potential in store and turned it into a chocolate factory, artisan products manufacturers and events/catering service. We are now looking for someone to run the house/kitchen and to run the volunteer program on the long term, so we can focus in extendinf our activities to other regions. This managing job would involve a great amount of enthousiasm and a beautifull potential of succes and learning.

We have our own in house culture, always changing depending on what arts our volunteers are sharing with us. Officially, we’re all off work in the evenings when we’ll have family style meals together. We also take entire days off together to do activities and explore, whenever spontaneity hits us. There’s a yoga platform and an aerial silk, and some of us practice regularly and invite others to join. We have a beautiful array of instruments and invite y'all to come jam with us.
If you choose to stay with us, you'll have many opportunities to explore the area, to go visit the beaches, waterfalls and more, to learn Spanish, English, Q'eqchi, or Garifuna, to hike in the jungle, or to go for a kayak ride. Its a a very interesting hub of mixed cultures in Livingston. It acts as a hurricane cover spot in the caribbean so there are many sailors, a developing expat community, and local Guatemalans from several different cultural backgrounds - namely the native tribe of Q'eqchi who can teach us a lot about the local flora and fauna and the caribbean, Garifuna people with their yummy coconutty foods and good vibes drumming. As far as culture goes, there will be many chances for you to learn about different and inspiring ways of life.
Here at the choco house, we hold space to showcase our volunteers creative talents and ask that you contribute in the ways you are most inspired. There are always projects to get into - artistic, social, building, gardening, etc. and we value the company of independent open-minded travelers to be self-motivated in their involvement in the house.
That being said, we require everyone to contribute energetically for the benefit of the community to take care of all the less pleasant tasks (cleaning, dishes, bathroom, etc) for about an hour every morning, all together with some funky beats to get us in the groove.
We would be especially grateful for helpers who are into eco-construction, gardening and who are naturally skilled at event planning, socially connecting and sales in town (you don't have to be all of those things, but more power to you if you are).
We have 1 bedroom in the house with a double bunk bed and space for you to store your stuff and tents outside on a riverfront platform for camping.
We offer 2 vegetarian meals a day during your working hours, late breakfast and dinner, and we all take turns in the cooking. *️️️️️️We're focused on simple, healthy living and our diet is based on fresh foods within a sustainable budget. Expect to have your own budget for personal items and specialty foods/interesting street foods like coconut bread, Jamaican sweets, and pupusas!
Livingston is a funky town - its right on the caribbean sea with the jungle, the mountains, and the Rio Dulce which winds it’s way around the town. You may enjoy and explore at your pleasure... take a canoe to the hot springs, hike through the shady groves to get to the waterfalls of siete altares, jump in the dark water of tiger cave... many magical wonders to meet!
Since its a new project, we ask that volunteers be flexible and easy-going and we will highly value the help of motivated individuals who would like to learn with us (or teach us!) and become an active, integral, part of our project. Its important to note that we believe travelers who are just looking for a cheap alternative to hostels will not be comfortable staying with us. We ask that you contact us if you are interested in some part of this project, or feel inspired to help carry it forward. We invite you to work with us, not for us and we will welcome you into our little community.
