Description
Weytk (greetings)!
We are a First Nations / Indigenous family located in the Interior of British Columbia.
This year 2025 is going to be filled with fun and hard work with many adventures along the way. Flexibility is the key when staying with us because you could be doing things like: riding horses at the ranch and ranch work, to attending and supporting rodeos, to building cabins in the bush and at our homelands in Clinton.
This year we are completing a log cabin build which will be the future workawayer "house" in our top field. We are also going to be prepping areas for building our forever home so could be digging and building a wildlife corridor to building irrigation ponds and tending the hay fields. We take regular trips to our homelands in Clinton where we spend time clearing trails on horseback and camping, building more cabins, fixing water systems and doing all sorts of things.
We also have elders that live near us so we are always taking care of them whether it is packing wood or dropping by with meals and other caring things.
I have a herd of 3 horses and one mini donkey. We also have 2 rotties, 1 mini aussie and 1 wolf cross for a total of 4 dogs that are all big sucks. If you want to check them out on insta we are sunnys.funny.farm and ringo.the.donkey you can see some of the goofy stuff we get up to there.
We are looking for individuals and families that are handy and interested in building and also horse and animal care. Ability to ride and take care of horses is a real bonus and will keep you heaps busy.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We are a First Nations / Secwepemc family and very actively practice our culture in terms of hunting, fishing, ceremony and love to share our culture.
Cultural Awareness and Sensitivities:
We would appreciate if travellers would do some pre-reading to build a foundation of awareness for cultural sensitivity and ensuring that we are supporting safe spaces in our home. Part of the Reconciliation journey includes learning and understanding the "Truth" before the Reconciliation to ensure that individuals are doing the work before coming into our home and not expecting us to be verbal encyclopedias.
Our family will make a lot of the information that you read come to life through real life and lived experiences. We are happy to share our knowledge but do not appreciate being questioned to death (which has happened in the past). We ask that when you come to our home you are respectful and take a listen first approach instead of an aggressive ask a million questions. We will share but it take time and trust to be built first.
Regarding Indigenous Peoples and Reconciliation we recommend:

- 21 things you may not know about the Indian Act - Bob Joseph

Regarding the Secwepemc Nation we recommend:

We are a First Nations / ranching family that have a 150 acre ranch on the Whispering Pines/Clinton reserve near Kamloops BC. We excited and happy to invite volunteers into our family to help work around the ranch and with our family. We are very active and ride horses, hunt, fish and run amuck which always keeps us busy. Our family has elders that we all pitch in and do their houses care and wood packing etc to take care of them. We probably have family dinners at least once a month to get together and laugh and connect and we do things as a little group frequently. We work hard and play hard and love to laugh and tease each other the whole time! It is a beautiful but more remote place being 25km from Kamloops but we are frequently in the town for work and travel back and forth. Your transportation around the ranch will be mainly on a quad and an old ranch truck (if it still works). We do all sorts of mechanic-ing and whatever is required to get things going.

Accommodation
Kamloops Ranch will be either in a basement suite or could be wall tents or other buildings / trailers closer to the build site as well. We are flexible! Internet access and speed is great.
What else ...
If you like to ride horses, go for rides on quads, hike, fish or anything like that our ranch has a ton of opportunities to offer. Getting to town is about a 25km drive but our family is frequently driving back and forth because many of us work in town during the day. Kamloops BC is our nearest city and once you hit the edge of Westsyde there is a good bus and public transit system to get around town. In the winter Sun Peaks resort is accessible from Kamloops by bus which has skiing, snowboarding etc... If you google the Whispering Pines Clinton Indian Band you will see aerial photos of the ranch and the facilities there.
