  • Description

Welcome - We are a small collective occupying an abandoned village on a ridge in Central Portugal. Our project - has been based here since 2008, slowly restoring the buildings, working the land and creating forest gardens.

We have several ruins and many fertile terraces, and many trees including olive, chestnuts, cork oaks, pines, walnuts and lots of fruit trees. We are constantly adding different varieties to increase diversity.
Our aim is to bring this area back to a vibrant life, in tune with Permaculture design principles.

We are looking for anyone with permaculture, sustainability, construction or any land-based skills to join us, either for shorter stays of up to one or two months, or for longer stays of a year or more. People up for hard work but a lot of fun are very welcome!

In return for 4-5 hours work per day we can provide accommodation and food . Household tasks such as cooking, washing up and collecting firewood are shared, and there will be plenty of time for swimming in the nearby river or long walks in the mountains.

What you need: head torch, a sense of humour and, most importantly, enthusiasm!

What the project needs: Down to earth, real people who are self motivated, have knowledge of permaculture principles, are interested in low impact living, are ecologically aware and are able to share their skills with others. We're now looking for skilled long term volunteers who are willing to work on their own ideas and capable of supervising the short term volunteers; and short term volunteers (min 2 weeks) with enthusiasm to learn.

Our project has good internet access in the communal living areas and green house, renewable energy (solar), shared living room, large kitchen dining area, a caravan and plenty of room for tents. These would all be made available for the duration of your stay.

If this all sounds like your kind of thing, then please get in touch!
Preferably we would like to have a chat, so send us your contact details and we can arrange a skype call.

We look forward to meeting you!

  • Help

Gardening - can you help us grow our own vegetables, fruits and salads? And design/plan for next year?
Construction - we are constantly working on the ruins here and building better facilities.
Native woodland - we are hoping to set up an area for growing native trees, help needed for organising and coordinating this.
Events - we have a Full Moon social with pizza cooked in our stone bread oven with friends and locals; possibly you can arrange more?
General clearing - we have lots of land, steps, and paths that need attention.
Whatever you can suggest yourself perhaps? We enjoy hearing ideas and including everyone in the decision making process.

  • Accommodation

We have 2 caravans which are often available for volunteers and visitors.

We also have an semi-outdoor kitchen/dining area.
As mentioned we have plenty of space for camping.

We would prefer if you bring your own tent but if not we can arrange something...
The office/living room has wifi internet available - all powered by renewable solar so there may be natural limits to usage in darkest winter!
Bathroom facilities are basic - we have a compost toilet and our shower is outdoors too - although rebuilding a shower block is on our list of things to do.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Public transport available through Coimbra as far as Vila Nova de Poaires, Gois or Arganil.
Phone ( ask for phone number when you write) for more details.
We can then arrange to pick you up from any of these towns.
If you can arrange your own transport that would be great!
