  Description

  We live in an ejido or rural community located in Ocozocoautla, Chiapas. There are 114 inhabitants here. From 2016-2019 we developed a project to provide access to water (through rainwater harvesting), we built different spaces: cabins, dry toilets, showers, ecological stoves, solar ovens, etc. Now, we focus on agriculture that respects nature and at the same time is linked to our local traditions. Volunteers will find here a multicultural environment and the opportunity to learn about the Tzotzil culture and the Zoque region of Chiapas (Ocozocoautla), in addition to exchanging knowledge and skills in a rural context. But they must be very autonomous because we will be outside a lot due to work and activities.

  Vivimos en un ejido o comunidad rural localizada en Ocozocoautla, Chiapas. Aquí hay 114 habitantes. De 2016-2019 desarrollamos un proyecto para brindar acceso al agua (a través de la captación de la lluvia), construimos diferentes espacios: cabañas, baños secos, duchas, fogones ecológicos, hornos solares, etc. Ahora, nos enfocamos en una agricultura que respete a la naturaleza y a la vez esté ligada a nuestras tradiciones locales. Los voluntarios encontrarán aquí un ambiente multicultural y la oportunidad de conocer la cultura tzotzil, y la región zoque de Chiapas (Ocozocoautla), además de intercambiar saberes y habilidades en un contexto rural. Pero deben ser muy autónomos porque estaremos mucho afuera por causa del trabajo y actividades.

  Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

  As a volunteer you will discover a Tsotsil community with a very particular culture in terms of history and traditions. Spanish and Tsotsil (a language of Mayan origin) are spoken here. You will be able to learn some traditional techniques related to construction, agriculture, and the use of medicinal plants. An interesting place for those who love contexts of multi-cultural exchange and like to be in full contact with nature.

  Descubrirás una comunidad tsotsil con una cultura muy particular en cuanto a historia y tradiciones. Aquí se habla español y tsotsil (una lengua de origen maya). Podrás aprender algunas técnicas tradicionales relacionadas con la construcción, la agricultura, el uso de plantas medicinales. Un lugar interesante para quienes aman los contextos de intercambio multi-cultural y gustan de estar en pleno contacto con la naturaleza.

  Help

  We would need your support in agriculture, specifically in growing the milpa (corn associated with other plants), and also you can help in animal care (sheep and cats), renovation of the volunteer cabin and sometimes in reforestation and gardening.
  There is also opportunity for teachers to help with English and/or Natural Sciences at a high school in the city of Ocozocoautla or the local school in the rural community

  Necesitaríamos sobre todo de tu apoyo en la agricultura, específicamente en el cultivo de la milpa (maíz asociado con otras plantas), también en el cuidado de animales (borregos y gatos), renovación de la cabaña de voluntarios y a veces en reforestación y jardinería.
  También puedes ayudarnos en. clases de inglés o ciencias naturales en una escuela preparatoria en Ocozocoautla, o bien, en la escuela local rural.

  Volunteers who are English speakers may be interested in sharing their language to children or teenagers in the school or in a highschool in the city of Ocozocoautla. We also can exchange in Spanish or French.

  Accommodation

  There is free accommodation in the small, very rustic house for volunteers that has been built with earth (bajareque) and where you can help to finish it. There are beds to accommodate two people, some furniture, a gas stove, a shower made of corn stalks and a dry bathroom. The environment is completely rural and conditions can be difficult if you take into account that we capture rainwater and there is no electricity in the volunteer house (but there is in the community center). The project includes finishing up the volunteer house. We do not feed or cook for volunteers. However, during the agricultural season (August to November) we can give them corn, beans, pumpkins and some fruits. You can buy food at the market in Ocozocoautla, the closest city, at a very low price.

  Tenemos un hospedaje gratuito en la pequeña casa muy rustica para voluntarios que ha sido construida con tierra (bajareque) y donde tú podrás ayudar para terminarla. Hay camas para alojar a dos personas, algunos muebles, estufa de gas, ducha construida con cañas de maíz y un baño seco. El ambiente es rural completamente y las condiciones pueden ser difíciles si tomas en cuenta que captamos el agua de lluvia y no hay electricidad en la casa de voluntarios (pero sí la hay en el centro de la comunidad). El proyecto incluye terminar de arreglar la casa de voluntarios. No damos la alimentación ni cocinamos para los voluntarios. Sin embargo, en temporada agrícola (agosto a noviembre) podemos darles maíz, frijoles, calabazas y algunos frutos. La comida podrás comprarla en el mercado de Ocozocoautla, la ciudad más próxima, a un precio muy bajo.

  We're in Ocozocoautla, by bus: one hour from Tuxtla Gutierez and 2 hours from San Cristóbal de Las Casas with available transport. The volunteers could visit Chiapas and also Oaxaca, Yucatan from here.

  Se llega a Ocozocoautla tomando un autobús desde Tuxtla (1 hora de viaje). Desde San Cristóbal debes ir primero a Tuxtla y luego a Ocozocoautla (total aproximado: 2 horas de viaje). Desde aquí podrás moverte hacia Oaxaca, o también a Yucatán, o bien a otras partes del estado de Chiapas.
