    Description

We're a rural community in Chiapas, Mexico, of 114 unhabitants. During the last three years we developed a project to build cabains, dry toilets, barn... rocket stoves, solar stoves and cisterns to stock rain water. We were helped by several french foundations that allowed us to make inversions in this area. Now, we are focused on developing an agriculture more friendly with nature and according with the local culture. We are also interested in native medicinal plants to make a catalogue of the important species of plants used by the people of this town. Volunteers will find a multicultural environment, an opportunity to know the tsotsil culture, the region zoque of Chiapas (Ocozocoautla) and exchange knowledges and abilities in a rural context.

They will discover a tsotsil community with his specific culture, history and traditions, they could speak spanish and tsotsil (a language of the maya family). They could learn about traditional technics in construction, agriculture, uses of medicinal plants. An interesting place for those who loves to exchange in a multi-cultural context and likes to be in a whole contact with nature.

    Accommodation

Collective house. Free. Accomodation is into a small volunteer's house built in earth (bajareque), you can help us to finish it. There are beds for four persons, some furnitures, gas cooker, shower built in maiz's cannes and dry toilet. The ambiance is rural and hard conditions if you consider we catch rainwater and there's not electricity in the volunteers's house (but in the midle of the town). The project includes helping us to finish the maintainance of the cabain of volunteers. We don't cook for the volunteers, we only can give some food (corn, beans, pumpkins and some fruits) in period of harvest (from August to November), but the food is very cheap in the market of the city of Ocozocoautla.
    ----------

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We're in Ocozocoautla, by bus: one hour from Tuxtla Gutierez and 2 hours from San Critobal de Las Casas with available transport. The volunteers could visit Chiapas and also Oaxaca, Yucatan from here... We think, the rhythm of 3 weeks helping the community and 1 week visiting the country is ideal.
    ----------
