Description
Our NGO is located in Epanomi, Thessaloniki. It is one hour away from the center of Tessaloniki by bus and 15 minutes away by bike from one of many beaches in the area!
We are a diverse community of locals, volunteers and interns from many different countries. We are living, working, laughing, crying and being creative and learning together everyday. We are very open minded and welcome anyone but we don't accept racist, sexist or homophobic behaviour in our community.

Our Organisations mission is to fight and adress food waste as well as food insecurity and to connect people from different backgrounds through shared meals.

We are visiting the local markets of Thessaloniki with our volunteers weekly, collecting surplus fruits and vegetables from the sellers with our partner organisation Boroume. With the collected food and with the help of local donors we are able to share with people in need from Thessaloniki.

We have a kitchen, perfect for cooking big meals as well as a garden in which we are planting herbs, veggies and fruits. We take turns daily in cooking for the community.

Our main activities are:

- cooking for our community
- collecting and sorting donations from the market
- general maintenance, especially of the kitchen area
- preserving food (making marmelades, dried fruits, sauces,..)

We recently moved to our new location so you can be a part of making the place more beautiful by supporting us with:
- painting the walls
- taking care and expanding our garden
- cleaning up parts of the building &
- building and fixing things

We require a minimum stay of 1 month from everyone who joins our organisation, so the person can adapt to community life and find their way around!

By having so many different cultures and languages in one place as well as reaccuring events of our partner organisation such as concerts, theater plays and workshops in different fields, people who join us will not only experience greek culture but a variety of cultures :)
We encourage volunteers to hold skill share activities of their hobbies and talents so we can all learn from each other.
Help
We are especially looking for people who know their way around a kitchen and have some experience in cooking for bigger groups of people and are not afraid to get their hands dirty. Furthermore we need help with general maintenance, gardening and processing surplus food.

Accommodation
You will have a sared bed room shared with min 2 and maximum 4 other volunteers. The living area, bathroom and kitchen are also shared. This also includes the library, theatre room, dancing room, internet access and so on. Eac room has an access to the balcony. We have a big garden perfect for hanging out and enjoying the sun. We provide three meals per day and eat together as a community at certain times.

In your time off you can visit the beautiful city of Thessaloniki as well as nearby beaches and cities of Greece. The organisation is located 1 hour from the city center and connected by public transport. There are multiple beaches close by and the Thessaloniki Macedonia Airport is 20 minutes away.

We've spent a month in Epanomi in the autumn of 2023. The town is a beautiful place with lovely coffee shops and a beautiful countryside. The center of Thessaloniki is an hour - hour and a half away by bus and it offers multiple opportunities for sightseeing. We especially loved the museums of Thessaloniki, and the beach near to Epanomi which were… read more extremely beautiful.
The bus offered frequent and cheap transportation to the city and the surrounding towns but sometimes it was unpredictable and especially at night it was risky going back to Epanomi. Once we couldn't get on the last bus and we got stuck in Thessaloniki, but we could call and someone picked us up by car. We are grateful for this and it presents the support of the community. Due to the nature of the organization, there were other unpredictable, abrupt or sudden situations or changes, volunteering here you just have to be okay with that, and the community always finds a solution for everything.
We worked in the kitchen. We would make breakfast, lunch and dinner from the fruits and veggies that the others collected from the market twice a week. Due to this, our diet was mostly vegan, though we always had some kind of animal-sourced protein (usually condensed milk). The kitchen was well equipped and we almost always got assistance so we could work with the other volunteers, though with our work we were a little bit separated from the others (for example we never went to the market or to a festival with them).
In the first two weeks we shared a small room with two other volunteers. Though the space was small, we could get comfortable, especially because we had different working hours, so everyone could have some time alone (and we also had amazing roommates:)). Also, the whole place has amazing wifi connection, even in the garden, so it also helped us get comfortable.
During that month we spent there the community had around 12 members, but this number was changing all the time; people came and went, and we had the opportunity to meet with amazing people from different cultures and experiences.
We are grateful for the time we spent here. We learned and experienced a lot, and we would highly recommend this place to everyone who wants to work hard in an international community filled with amazing people.

I cannot express enough how grateful I am to have worked with this host. I stayed in Epanomi for about a month and throughout that time, I was changed for the better. The organization just recently moved to their new location after being in their previous one closer to the Thessaloniki city center for years.… read more Because of this, tasks were constantly shifting and changing in order to support the newly established community. Go with the flow and everything with be alright!

Most of my duties consisted of cooking, cleaning the housing, arranging and organizing materials, and jumping around to help wherever help was needed. When I first arrived, a schedule wasn't necessarily established and volunteers were working quite independently. The organization doesn't want to enforce a power structure and tries to stray away from giving certain individuals titles or positions of power. Although I appreciated this, it was then often difficult to know who to go to especially when the organization's main leaders and founder were busy with tasks outside of the house. Although this is true, the longer I stayed, the more organized things became. Duties are now assigned in the beginning of each week and there is plenty of time to explore Epanomi, go to the beach, or even take the bus to the city center during your free time. If you ever feel lost, Lia and Bedi are wonderful and will answer any questions or concerns you have. Dionisis, the organization's founder, is also such a wise, knowledgeable individual. Make sure to find some time to sit with him and pick his brain! Additionally, Başak, Bedi's sister and now one of my good friends, is a wonderful person to turn to especially if Lia, Bedi, and Dionisis are busy. She is such a hard worker and was vital in keeping everything organized.

My recommendation is volunteer for as many of the community activities as possible when they present themselves. We worked at the Thessaloniki Pride Festival which was such a blast and we also helped at a local music festival called Lake Mode. When these events happen, jump in head first! That was when I really was able to get to know locals and grow closer with the other volunteers. The organization also goes to two markets throughout the week (one in the city center and one in Epanomi). When you are there, you collect produce that vendors no longer wish to sell. The organization then keeps some for the volunteers but then donates the rest to the local community. At these markets, you get to see and communicate with the local people which was one of the highlights of my experience.

Finally, you will work with eager, motivated people from all over the EU. This was an absolutely invaluable aspect of my time in Epanomi, and now I have friends from all over Europe.

Ultimately, the most difficult aspect of the experience was when I had to say goodbye! Thank you for everything. See you soon!
