    Description

We are a young couple who've worked hard to buy and develop an 18 acre lifestyle block in the beautiful Longbush Valley, Wairarapa. We have two children aged three and one. We have horses, cats, chickens, ducks and dogs. Longbush is a lovely rural valley in the Wairarapa wine country, with the wine village of Martinborough just a 15 minute drive away. We're about a 45 min drive away from hiking in the Haurangi or Tararua Ranges, and about one and a half hours to drive to Wellington (the capital city). We're often very busy, hence we live a quiet life and are usually in bed by 10pm. We are not vegetarian but if you don't mind meat being cooked in the same kitchen we can accommodate vegetarians.

Every Workawayer who has stayed with us has learned about looking after children, and how to run a small farm and the work involved in that. We study the Warwick Schiller method of horsemanship when it comes to working with our horses and I can teach some of that.

  • Help

    Help

We need childcare, some yard work and general outside tidying, like mowing lawns, spraying weeds etc. If you are familiar with horses we may need some horse care (handling, grooming, mucking out). We need diligent and hard workers.

You will need to have good English.

We are a great place to be if you're looking to have some quiet time in the country.

We do expect you to use initiative and put some effort into the help here. Must love animals and children. No smokers please.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

A simple caravan (trailer) parked outside our house, with a queen size bed. There is WiFi signal in there and it will have electricity and coffee/tea making facilities. You will have access to the bathroom via a short walk to our back door. We do not have cellphone reception but the internet is very good. The two cats are special members of our family, so we can't take any volunteers who do not like or are severely allergic to cats. Please note the caravan is too cold during the winter months, hence we do not take volunteers between April and November. Please check our calendar for availability.

If you want to see more of the area in your down time it would be recommended to have your own car as we don't have a spare one, and we are very rural. The closest town is 20km away and we do not often make special trips to town. Being so far from town it is very quiet and peaceful here. We have a great place for people who like to take photographs or draw and sketch, the scenery is very pretty. Our neighbours are also hosts and there may be the opportunity for you to meet and travel with other Workawayers.
