    Description

Our non-profit project consists of a 60 acre mixed species woodland with a very interesting past and hopefully a very interesting future.

The woodland has been very mismanaged in the past, from planting of many different invasive species to using it as a dump for all sorts of rubbish. It now has a new vision to be managed by those that want to turn it to a place for people and nature to thrive.

We are working to turn it back to a native British woodland habitat where we allow space for all the natural ecological dynamics. We are encouraging people and community to flourish too by sharing educational spaces for all, running forest school classes, craft courses and other community based events.

We want to invite people to come share, build skills and enjoy themselves. The list of projects to be involved with is endless. Likewise, we also invite those with their own set of skills in which we can learn from also.

There are many big dreams here and we need help building them. If you want to live in the woods and contribute to and learn about a different way of living then get in touch.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Within the realms of woodland ecology and alternative, off-grid living there is scope to learn pretty much anything you want. We want to create a space where people come to learn but also where they come to share their knowledge and culture with us and the local community.

The ecology of woodland is very specific to this part of the world so a unique perspective on ecology can be gained.

The crafts and techniques that many frequenters take part in are also unique to this part of the world too, for example, traditional English timber framing.

Many of us are also involved in the local traditional music scene. Some of us play a lot of music and often perform locally as well as going to gigs so this can all be shared too.

At our doorstep too is the world famous Lake District National Park. Not only is the landscape beautiful it has inspired many famous pieces of art and literature. The mountains and lakes are here to enjoy and experience for us all.

Of us residents, we are all enthusiastic and passionate and can share what we know within our personal expertise. This includes many things such as

    Native ecology
    Practical woodland help
    Traditional woodwork and building techniques
    Most aspects Off-grid living
    Cooking
    Forest school education

there's lots of space here for projects little and large. there's always something to get involved in. Equally, if you have ideas of what you could bring to this place and teach us then let us know.

this is a free open space for like-minded people to enjoy!

  • Help

    Help

Because of the nature of this woodlands mismanaged past there is a lot of 're-balancing’ to do so mainly we need help with...

selective woodland management (learning of invasive and non-native tree species and their management)

tree planting of native trees (winter)

    track creation and maintenance

    Forest garden maintenance

clearing of past rubbish in woodland.

    Improving social and learning spaces

BUT... if you can think of something that can benefit our project and our ethos then by all means you can spend your time doing that.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

There is a yurt for workaways to stay in. It’s only 9 foot in diameter but There is a double bed and room for bags and things. There’s a social area where there’s a wood burning stove and sink and hobs for cooking. There is a compost toilet.

evening meals can be provided each day and usually cooked together as a whole. Due to work and other commitments of us living here we can’t provide cooked breakfast and lunch.

there's also lots of space for guests to park up campervans and pitch tents/yurts.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Our project is completely off-grid. We do have running water but very limited electric from solar power.

Guests would have to be comfortable with this. There is minimal phone signal also...but you'll get a much better connection in the woods once all the clutter of life is gone!

we're 4 miles from town with everything you could want there. 5 miles from the nearest lake, Ulswater and the beautiful Lake District National park.

there's a million and one things to do in the area if you like the outdoors.
