Our Family School in Bodhgaya, India, is a very small school run for Dalit children in the local community.
The Children that attend the School are from extremely poor and disadvantaged families and up until now would never have the opportunity to be educated. Our vision is to give our children a free basic education, improving their future prospects and keeping them off the streets. Children are taught Hindi, English, Maths and Social Science.
The school is run by married couple Sudhir and Radha, who live with their young family out of 2 rooms at the school. There are 100 students and 3 teachers. The school was started from nothing in 2008, and since the building is 80% completed through fundraising and donation efforts.
Help with Eco Projects
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Volunteers are needed to help with classes and play with the children at break time. Volunteers are required from 9am-1pm each day.
We would also accept volunteers who are able to carry out practical tasks around the school, such as painting walls and other maintenance ideas.
Sudhir and Radha have been developing the building to include a volunteer bedroom which will be ready by mid-February. Use of shared bathroom and kitchen in the home are included. Up to 3 beds are available
Bodhgaya is a major Buddhist destination, and people come here from all over the world to visit the temples and practice meditation. There are many centers running meditation courses and a good selection of vegetarian restaurants all within walking distance of the school.
