I will be out of town for about a month and a half (January 7-February 18) and the primary purpose of your stay would be to take care of my cat and house.

You must arrive no later than January 5 for a welcome orientation of sorts (earlier is acceptable, by arrangement) and are welcome to stay through the end of February (also flexible, by arrangement).

I'd prefer to host one Workawayer but would be open to two. In choosing people to stay in my home, I do not discriminate based on gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity and expect you to be, specifically, LGBT-friendly, and more broadly, open to interacting with all types of people.

Important note: A car is not a complete necessity but is very much recommended as public transit is still quite lacking in Detroit. Something to consider!

My area of Detroit is fantastic and you'll have plenty to do during your time here. Before I leave for my trip, I'll be glad to show you around and answer any questions you have. (I'm also working to build out a Detroit guidebook of sorts if you're interested in that.) At the very least, you'll get a detailed house/property tour. You'll be welcome to use my bicycle as well (as long as you keep it safe!). I also have a keyboard piano for music lovers, plenty of books and subscriptions to many streaming services, so plenty of TV and movies to watch as well.

As I said, the primary purpose of your stay would be to take care of my cat, Esteban. (He's very, very friendly and will want to be your new best friend!) Clean the litter box, make sure he's well fed, etc. Mostly just spend time with him. You should have at least some experience with cats. The only other necessities are to keep the house clean and tidy and check the mail. This will amount to no more than an hour a day, but I do want someone here daily, so please only message me if you can commit to the entire duration.

I just bought this historic 1914 home at the end of 2025 and there's much to be done, so I'd love to host a handy person or someone with any artistic skills who's willing to share ideas!

To confirm you've read this profile, I'm asking that you put ESTEBAN in the subject line when you reach out.

I have a historic house in the city's Poletown neighborhood, which today is known for its urban farming. (I'm very proud to be a small part of that and am working on building a community garden on my property.) It's a mere 8-10 minute drive to the heart of Downtown Detroit and about 25 minutes by bicycle. Equally close to a most of the city's great neighborhoods... Midtown, Corktown, Mexicantown, West Village, Indian Village, Belle Isle, etc. I'm right off of I-94 so it's also very convenient to drive to the surrounding communities. A car is not a complete necessity but is very much recommended as public transit is still quite lacking in Detroit. Although, since I'm quite close to downtown and the core city neighborhoods, if you're an active bicyclist it'll be no problem!

Obviously, the house is yours for the duration of your stay. If you choose to also stay while I'm back, you'll be expected to sleep on the couch and share a bathroom with me. I do have a half-bath in the basement that's available. Fully-equipped kitchen. Central heating and electric heaters available though I do ask you to use them only as necessary (gas heating is very expensive here!).

My goal is to provide a comfortable and safe experience for you, so you can do the same for my cat! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

    Esteban (14 years)

Esteban is a very friendly 14-year-old cat who I've had for 12 years now. He'll immediately want to be your best friend! He's fairly vocal and quite active for an older cat but you'll usually find him sleeping in his bed... or in one of numerous other places around the house!
