  • Description

Between June - August 2017 we will build a house made of natural, local materials, for the benefit of a local vulnerable Roma family. This is the prototype for a medium and long term project that empowers local Roma people in the village called Rosia / Rothberg to build affordable housing for themselves.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Transylvania is a very special region where you experience amazing beauty of the traditional landscape and cultural heritage.

    U P vs. D O W N:
The village of Rosia is situated on a hilly area near Sibiu, spreading across the valley and then upwards towards the historical centre. Because of the varied landscape, the village is split between the Village on the hill (“Satul de sus”) and the Village in the valley (“Satul de jos”). This vertical border is felt not only in the geography, but also within the community: the less privileged families, mostly Roma, live in the valley, while the wealthier ones up, on the hill.
Other factors, such as infrastructure, ethnic distribution, housing and overall living quality or even accessibility are also severely differentiated by this up/down border.

You will learn about the multiethnic livestyles in the region, the socio-economic struggles of the Roma community and experience new building techniques with local materials.

  • Help

In a village called Rosia / Rothberg, near Sibiu, a social NGO assists the local Roma community by building houses with local materials and techniques.

    Dates: 14th June - 1st August

Meals: food is provided for 3 meals per day, but we cook for ourselves (volunteering shifts for lunch)

The materials used in the construction of the house are:
    - earth and wood for the walls
    - straw for the earth mix
    - reed for insulation
    - recycled building materials available locally - such as bottles, tiles and so on
    - if time allows us, we will try to bring some esthetics and liveliness into the project by designing, together with the family, DIY furniture, swings for the children and other deco - elements. Every idea is welcome!
