  • Description

We are an agroforestry and permaculture system style farm in the jungles of Panama. We are located in the jungle, and are a part of a study abroad institute and that is attempting to build the worlds most sustainable modern town. Our farm is one aspect of our community that allows us to experiment with producing food in alternative ways. We do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides and grow tropical fruits and vegetables. As a volunteer you will work on our farm anywhere from 4 to 5 hours a day and will have the opportunity to attend farm lectures in order to learn more about our practices. We are unique farming experience because of the community you will live in. We are completely off the grid and use solar panels to run our wifi and energy. We provide housing on open air platforms which are surrounded by the jungle. You will be given a tent and an air mattress or you can bring a hammock to sleep in. Our kitchen staff make 3 meals a day for you, often integrating produce from our farm into every meal (Katuk and cranberry hibiscus salads are our favorite!).

Our community is a unique place to work and grow as we are situated in one of the most diverse and quickly growing countries in Latin America; Panama. While working away here you will be surrounded by local Panamanian farmers and neighbors who mainly speak Spanish and will teach you anything from how to swing a machete properly to how to make cheese with fresh farm milk! Our other staff members are from all over the world and are a part of our business because they want to be a part of building a sustainable town. As a part of this community you will find that the experience is what you make it and you can be immersed in many different projects, cultures, and gain valuable friendships.

We are looking for individuals who do not mind getting dirty and can work outside for many hours a day. (We live in a tropical environment which can range from sunny, humid and 85 degrees F to pouring rain at any given moment). Previous experience working on a farm is not required (but is preferred). As a volunteer you would be expected to work on the farm weeding, tilling, planting seeds, transferring plants, digging ditches, creating compost, gathering edible plants for meals, etc. You may also be asked to assist in small building projects under the guidance of our farm and build team (no experience required). We are looking for volunteers who are willing to work hard while learning about agroforestry and permaculture techniques, tropical farming, farm management, pest and disease control, edible food systems and more!

We provide all staff members and volunteers a space on a shared, open air platform where we can provide a tent and air mattress. If you prefer, you may also bring or purchase a hammock in Panama City to sleep in. Our amazing kitchen staff prepares 3 meals a day for us, free of cost (and which often use farm ingredients!). We have full community showers and toilets just steps from staff camp with water from our own tributary up the river.

We will provide helpers with transportation into the valley from San Miguel, our local neighboring town. On weekends you can travel to Panama City by bus very easily for about $2. We can also provide cultural experiences such as home-stays with our neighbors in San Miguel. Because of our remote, jungle location, we are surrounded by natural beauty at every turn; there are a ton of hikes and swimming holes all around us where staff members usually end up on weekends.
