Right now we are looking for workawayers to join us in October (maybe November too) and our priority is to search for those who have some sort of skills in carpentering - BUT if you don’t, you’re still welcome to send us a message 😁
Hey there! 😁
I’m Marita and I live with my brother Mikael at a farm (built 1890) in the Swedish countryside.
Our place is located 150 kms north of Gothenburg and 150 kms south east of Oslo (Norway) - at the Swedish westcoast, only 4 kms from the sea and the famous archipellago. We have a large house (2 floors á 100 m2 + a basement), a large barn, a smaller barn, a large lawn, a quite large timber cottage (40 m2) next to the house, woodland and fields.
Both of us are raised at this farm (NB! we are not farmers), located between Grebbestad, Fjällbacka and Tanumshede. There are so many opportunities and so much to do here at the farm - too much for us alone to handle and that's why we would love some help and inspiration from nice, hardworking (this is Workaway for some hours a week, not holiday) and friendly workawayers :-)
Marita is a filmmaker/film director who loves and needs to be creative in one way or the other (acting, photography, 3D-modelling, writing etc.) It's Marita you will have contact with here at workaway and she is also the one who is "the administrator" and trying to sort things out. Marita has been travelling quite a lot around the world and also lived in other countries. She's never got over that travel bug and she's dying for go out travelling again - but for now she has to be calm and stay where she is! That's why she's happy to meet workawayers, because in one way or the other it feels like travel a bit - even though she's at home.
Mikael has been working on the farm with keeping up the good standard on the buildings (the boring part). It has been going on during 10 years, so Mikael has the skills and will let you know what to do and how to do it. If you feel that this place is right for you (now when the most funny part of the renovation starts) then you will be learning a little bit of everthing concering renovation. Maybe you'll have skills in some areas, then Mikael will gladly listen to your advice or be open for your creative solutions. Mikael´s other side is that he's intrestead in areas of spirutality and you will hear more of that if you will come here.
Both of us are kindhearted, calm and simple people, but we're also optimistic and hard working. We are highly creative in a solution oriented way, and we have different kind of modern working tools to our help - which make the work interesting and instructive in a unique way for all the workawayers who wants to join us, for some weeks/months.
If you stay at our farm you can take a walk on the fields or in the woods and you will probably see some roe deer in our lawn, one or two moose on a field, foxes playing around and there might be some bats flying next to the house catching mosquitos :-)

Help in the house
Primarily we want to work together and cooperate with our volunteers by renovating and fixing different projects at the farm in a highly creative in a solution oriented way. So if you're a workawayer that would love to cooperate with us in tasks like that - we will be really happy!
If you are a volunteer that wants to to bake and cook, clean and keep the house in order - for sure you are welcome to join us! If any of our volunteers would like to cook dishes from your own country, that would be great too!
We will try to teach you some Swedish dishes and/or some Swedish pastry, if someone wants to learn things like that from us :-)
You will like our place on the Swedish westcoast if you want to learn to take initiative, to immerse yourself in a new hobby, take responsibility for making your day a great one and interact with other people in a nice, friendly way and with some humor!
The volunteers will learn about renovating/restoration and working together with us and with other workawayers.
You will of course also learn something about Sweden, Swedish social codes and Swedish country living too.
Anyway, it's always nice to have good company, good conversations and the possibility to exchange and learn from each other - without any strict hierarchy.
Almost in all our buildnings at the farm need some sort of renovating, in one way or the other. We have many things to do concerning the apartment on the top floor in the house and the basement, the timber cottage, the smaller barn, the bigger barn and some other external projects. Our future plans are a seminar room, gym, gaming room, pool deck, outdoor shower and other interesting & challenging projects - e.g repair a hot tub and make it warm up with wood instead of electricity.
Right now we're welcoming people who can help us with interesting refurbishment work, renovating, building, cleaning, do the laundry, ordering the house, moving objects, cooking, baking and work/live together. Please, let us know what of these areas you're interested in.
Mikael and myself are persons who likes to work hard and we would like to welcome volunteers that wants to roll up their sleeves - like we do.
Some days can be long working days and other days can be shorter, that's we say that the working time is flexible.
The work here at the farm will be quite physical, but it's just perfect that no one has to mow the huge lawn we have - "Elsie" (our robot lawn mower) is helping us with that task!
We are looking for volunteers interested in a minimum 1 month stay (2 months if you want to learn how to renovate) - even longer if we like each other :-)
PLEASE READ: If you write to us and we let you know we have space, then we kindly ask you to be considerate and let us know if you are going to cancel. If so we will have the chance to give your place to some other traveler. We are straight forward and honest persons and that's why we expect you to be the same!
You can choose to sleep in your own bedroom, on the first floor in the house (see more information about the house further down).
NB! The cottage is closed for the winter right now and we will open it in Spring again ☺️ (Otherwise you can sleep in our typical Swedish "stuga" (timber cottage) next to the house, with a nice sweeping view over the fields. The cottage is a fully equipped guesthouse of 40 m2, with an open fire place and 4 beds (3 bunk beds and one double bed). Have a look at the pictures!)
You are also welcome to bring your own tent, caravan, RV or car - we have plenty of room on our property :-D
The house (200 m2) is fully equipped with unlimited internet/wifi, TV, modern stove, oven, mictrowave oven, dishwasher, clothes washer & dryer, refrigerators, freezers, showers and even a sauna! Of course you are expected to keep it all clean and in order.
Bed linen, blankets, pillows and towels are provided.
The house has one balcony, one terrace and one porch, so you'll have a lot of space to relax and just chill or have a chat. We also have garden furniture at the huge lawn and grills where you can have a barbeque!
The food is for free (2 meals a day and breakfast (workawayers prepare their breakfast themselfs)), of course, occationally we’ll eat vegetarian food (even though Marita is non vegetarian and Mikael prefer and eat mostly vegan food) but normally we eat all kind of food and we would love to have a workawayer with us, who is passionated about cooking and who wants to help us out with cooking - and maybe do some baking too :-D It would be great to have a Swedish "fika" (coffee/tea/soda and some sweets) once in a while :-D
If a volunteer is interested in house clean up and do the laundry we would be really happy too!
We are always happy to taste new dishes and are excited if any workawayer would like to share their cooking from home!
Mikael and I have no problems if you feel like be for yourself and enjoy your own space on your spare time and if you feel like join other workawayers you can do that too. Sometimes we all together can go on shorter trips - if we have worked hard and done everything we’re supposed to finish of the work tasks. It's important that we all do what we feel like and respect each other. Although we like to be social, Mikael and myself, we also sometimes need our own space for a little while.
We appreciate that you are a non-smooker, not are a misuser of alcohol and needless to say NO drugs whatsoever is accepted at the farm. We do like anmials a lot, but we don't have any here and we don't want you to bring any animals either (with respect to those who are alleric). We do not tolerate cheating, stealing or lying of any kind... Please only serious inquiries as we rely on people who confirm dates to us! You are openminded, kindhearted, ready to be involved with everything that's going on at the farm, hardworking, independent, social and trustworthy towards the house, the other persons and of course the work. If so, you'll have the best time with us!
BUT when you stay at our farm and we all have spare time, we will also have some fun! Some days you will go on activities with Mikael or myself and some days on your own or with other workawayers.
We are fortunate to live in a beautiful place, so there are plenty of moments for relaxation and leisure time - both in the nature, in historic places with rock carvings (only a few kms away), in town, with different kind of sports and just relax next to the sea. We will be able to arrange shorter trips to visit a very beautiful, varied and diverse northern part of the beautiful Swedish west coast and it's archipelago.
Notice that our farm is in the countryside, so it's important that you like the fields, the forrest and the nature! It's 200 meters to the closest neighbour and the closest village with food store and shopping is Tanumshede or Grebbestad, both of them 6 kms away from the farm. The picturesque smaller city of Strömstad is 30 kms away (30 min by car) and the Norwegian border with a huge shopping center is 50 kms away. If you want to visit Gothenburg (the second biggest city in Sweden) or Oslo (capital of Norway), you can reach both of those cities by bus/car within 2 hours - just perfect for a daytrip!
There are so many outdoor- and indoor activities, so many places to see and trips to do in this area of Sweden, it's hard to list them all, but just to mention one great place to go is Tanum Strand. This place is just 4-5 kms from the farm and at Tanum Strand there is a gym, spa and swimming pool. You can rent a boat there, sea kayaking, play tennis, scuba diving, practice yoga, rent a bike, eat at the restaurant or just enjoy the wiew of the sea at the beach or at the rocks and why not take a bath/swim.
IMPORTANT!!! Please note that our own insurance does NOT covers volunteers/employees. Although we will of course make every precaution to prevent accidents, we strongly recommend you to buy a travel insurance that covers manual work, from World Nomads or similar. The Swedish healthcare it is very good for EU volunteers, but you also need to have a European health insurance card. They are free from your country's insurance system, so please get one of those before arriving to us.
We do prefer that a workawayer stay of 1 month (2 months if you want to learn how to renovate) - even longer if we like each other! :-)
If you have medical issues or physical disabilitys, if there are any chores discribed above you cannot or really dont want to do, please let us know in advance!
If you are applying to several hosts at the same time, please let us now in your first message.
HOW TO GET TO OUR PLACE:
Of course you pay yourself to get to Tanumshede (the main town in this area), but once you arrive there we can pick you up by car at the bus stop/train station! We kind of live between Oslo and Gothenburg.
The airports nearby are: Gothenburg Landvetter (Sweden), Oslo Torp (RYANAIR, Norway) and Oslo Gardemoen (Norway). From all airports there are regular bus shuttles into the city-centres and from there overlandbuses to Tanumshede, where we without any problems can pick you up by car.
From Copenhagen there are cheap overland-buses passing Gothenburg (Göteborg) and heading for Oslo (Norway); these buses are also passing Tanumshede, which is our closest town - where we can pick you up by car. Of course there are buses from Oslo heading for Copenhagen too. From Stockholm (capital of Sweden) you can go by bus to Gothenburg and then take the bus/train nort to Tanumshede.
From Hamburg (Germany), Copenhagen (Denmark) or Stockholm (capital of Sweden) you can take the train to Gothenburg. In Gothenburg you have to change to the train (or bus) heading for Strömstad and after a two hours trip on that train, you will reach the train station "Tanum" - that's the station we will pick you up by car.
