    Description

    Hi there,

I am a solo-mom living on a wonderful archipelago located in the middle of the St. Lawrence Gulf, as part of Quebec, Canada. I am looking for someone who is interested in childcare and gardening to help at home a few hours/week from July to October 2025.

My kid is a very joyful and curious baby. He is 1 year old and I have to progressively go back to work. I am a freelance visual arts worker (working from home about 21 hours a week). Unfortunately, there are not enough daycare structures in our small community, and I would need an extra pair of hands to help taking care of my small family : the baby, a cat, and myself. I am particularly interested in cultural exchange with travelers, as I had very significant international working experiences (French teaching, fruit picking, etc.) as well as research residencies in contemporary art in Americas, Europe, and Africa. I am an easy going and optimistic person, I do my best to participate in an ecological and local way of life.

My son’s father is Brazilian - Canadian and I thought having someone taking care of him speaking Portuguese would be fantastic, in exchange with French learning (I also speak English and Spanish).

Mainly French speaking, with fishery and tourism as main seasonal summer activities, Magdalen islands (Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine) are also very popular for beaches and kite surfing. You should know that this is a remote destination. Islands are 5 hours of ferry off Prince Edward Island. Insularity create rich cultural specificity, but also a certain intensity in climate (it can be particularly windy and during the fall)!

I would be happy to learn more about yourself and and eventually plan a virtual meeting !

    All the best,

    Véronique

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

I practice edible and medicinal plants foraging during the summer and fall (mushroom, fruits, herbs).
I am also leading an artistic and community based project around foraging on the Islands, as a contemporary art curator.
I am interested in learning other languages, and I am also interested to learn anything that has to do with domestic and DIY know-how and recipes...

My expectations are 5 hours of babysitting / gardening per day, 5 days a week (Monday to Friday), in exchange for accommodation and meals. Volunteering schedule can be flexible. Optimum length for the stay would be 1 to 4 months, and I am open to talk about any aspect of the stay that could accommodate better reciprocity in what is offered.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Our house has 3 confortable rooms by the sea. One of them would be dedicated to our guest. We have Wi-fi, and the room is furnished (double bed, table, chair, bookshelf, etc.) I also grow veggies in a small garden. We can share meals (mainly pesco vegetarian during summertime, organic when possible), or organize a way to share ingredients to make meals if the person have other food preferences. Ideally, we would share cooking.

    What else ...

There is no public transportation on the Islands, but a bike and, occasionally, a car could be available for the person staying with us (with valid driver's licence). There are kilometers of beaches to walk all around ! Non smoking house, but there is a lot of space outside.
