Description
Hi Workawayers!
My name is Pietro, I am 54 years old and live on my organic farm with 3 dogs located in the Province of Siracusa, approximately 15km from Catania Airport. On 104 hectares I am currently producing rice, legumes (lentils, chick peas, grass peas), olive oil and oranges for direct sales. For us we have also different varieties of fruits and vegetables and out spring water. We started also a little permaculture garden with only ancoent seeds in the more wild zone with spring water and working only with hands.
I'll provide food and shelter for everyone who is willing to give a hand and look forward to meeting people and get to know their cultures while they can get to know our own.
We can speak a good english and very good spanish.
For now we work to: the system of our spring water, vegetables gardens, planting seeds, cut olives and oranges brunches.
IMPORTANT: if you are interested to come, please write your arrival and departure dates in the message title.

Workawayers have the chance to learn about and improve in orchard management practice. I am always happy to share some of my experience, so if wanted we'll find ourselves in exchange of knowledge on agriculture and alternative farming, and we can teach natural cusine.
Sicily is a beautiful region with a lot of interesting places and you will get a good glimpse on sicilian life and culture on the countryside!Help
Depending on the season and availability of produce, work will include
- gardening
- work on the spring
- harvest of olives and oranges and pruning of the respective trees
- sorting, selection and cleansing of seeds (lentils, rice, etc.)
- maintenance of fruit and vegetable garden which serves as the principle source of food
- preparation of produce for sales and at times selling goods at the market.

Two houses on the farm serve as principal shelter. I live and sleep in one of them whereas the other contains the kitchen in which most of the indoor farm-life takes place. Here we cook our meals and use the space for selection and preparation of produced goods. It also comprises the (separate) room in which you will be staying. While being principally a single room, it will be shared with other workawayers if necessary. In general I am not likely to host more than two or three persons at the same time. The house includes wi-fi and hot water.
Meals will be taken three times a day, breakfast more or less independently and lunch/dinner together. Flexibility has it that this might change at times, but there will always be enough food provided for you. Our food is consistently vegetarian (though we cook meat on rare occasions) while using our own produce as much as possible.
Possible also 100% organic vegan food for every meal. What else ...
We're in proximity of a train station and bus stop, however best reachibility is provided by car. The next towns are about 10km and Etna volcano 60km away as well as Siracusa (city). Catania center is 20km far. At times we will go there to do some additional shopping.
On free days I can drop you off at cities or sights you want to visit or we can visit places together.

On my stay of 3 weeks I had the possibility to get to know an alternative iltalian farmwork. The work was fair as I could indenpently decide how long to work. Most of the time I prepared the rice for packaging and cleaned/dried it.

Our three weeks of staying at Pietro's was full with good discussions, interessting work and a good spirit. Even if the farm is isolated and the buildings are old, we felted really home and were sad to leave Pietro and his lovely dogs.
Hope to come back soon, Jonas and Corina.
You have been excellent! Great fun having you here. Thanks for all your hard work on the farm, pruning trees, help at the garden, and all the rest, thanks for setting up such a great website from nothing, thanks for all the translations and contact with clients etc.
