NOTE - As Max suffered from a stroke in February 2019 the helper profile has changed a bit. If you are good at fixing things, enjoy gardening, cooking and transforming fruit and vegetables that would be great. Experience with people with reduced mobility would be a real plus. Max is improving slowly but steadily and walking with help, but is not yet able to be hands on around the place. My time is limited on the property as I spend a good deal of it looking after the boss! There is less renovation but more maintenance but the work is still varied and the property pretty magic.
We are a well-travelled, anglo/french retired couple (young in spirit) living in an old farmhouse in a rural area just south of Brittany and 10kms from the coast and the river Loire.
Our project, which is approaching completion, included the renovation of the former command centre of the order of the Maltese Knights and its outhouses, re-establishing a good sized herbs and vegetable garden and knocking the paddocks, the fencing and gardens back into shape. We also have an old farm building which has been renovated to create a holiday rental or 'gîte' for small groups with a reception area downstairs.
We have a young dog Witts and we often have the sheep from the farm next door to help keep the grass under control in the spring. We have 3 children who are grown and living and working overseas but who come home from time to time. We do enjoy helping our workaway helpers to improve their language skills (either in French or in English) and give them the opportunity to discover the beauties of the Pays de Retz and South Brittany, from Nantes to Guérande and La Baule to Pornic.
We are flexible with working times to enable our workawayers to enjoy longer week-ends to discover our region. We have bikes that you can borrow to explore during your time off. Meals are taken together and we encourage our helpers to participate in the cooking.

We are supposed to be good and patient teachers of both english and french according to previous helpers. Plenty to learn about rural france, conserving fruits and natural gardening techniques.
Ideally we would like a couple for a period fof 2 to 3 weeks depending on how it works out for both parties. On the agenda at the moment : when the weather is fine there is gardening, weeding, mowing, strimming, chopping wood and help with fencing. Some painting and furniture renovation work. A hand with the cooking is much appreciated.
We are located close to some lovely beaches and only a 30 minute drive to cross the Loire and find yourself in South Brittany. Nantes is 50 kms to the east.

We provide a large room in the main house which is insulated and heated. Shared bathroom and toilet. All meals and drinks (within reason!) are provided.
We can come and pick us volunteers at Nantes airport or at Nantes railway station which is about 45 minutes drive from home. When possible, we try to encourage the use the bus services to nearby villages from Nantes and we pick you up from there. We could also envisage the loan of a car from time to time to allow the volunteers to visit the surrounding area. We can lend you a bike too.
