Hey!

Looking to contribute meaningfully, do some good, learn something new in a beautiful place and get inspired for our own creative endeavours. A longer commitment.

When I travel I look at the big and the little. Like to live slow, with attentiveness and some exceptions :). Love to hitchhike, its kindness and selflessness and how it crosses all kinds of paths and stories. Hitchhiked all over Europe, Athens to Gdańsk, Gdańsk to Birmingham, hitchhiked every morning to get to work in Iceland. Born in Poland, lived in Sweden and Iceland.

I like to share our passions and be impassioned. I come with a Mathematics degree and really good English, both from Cambridge. I like to watch and want to make beautiful photography, get lost in books and movies. I am a passionate baker, especially for the sourdough which is my frequent companion. I respect and aspire to veganism in my kitchen, though I am not fully there yet.

In the past I worked as a software engineer and later in the diner's kitchen and behind the cafe's counter. Volunteering is important for me, when at home I engage in social work with children and cook with Food Not Bombs. I enjoy physical work and I am a budding buddhist too.

We enjoy active and outdoor lifestyle. We like sports, skiing, tennis, swimming, yoga, and hiking, especially amidst beautiful sights. Always in for an exchange of books and films.
We're both really sociable, we see traveling as mostly making connections with local community as well as other travelers.

I stayed with Miss Babita for two weeks, and it was a truly memorable experience. The village is located in a beautiful, remote area with breathtaking mountain views. Vom Workawayer () für Host (Farm collective close to the ...)

We spent only five days at the farm. Initially it was a little hard, the atmosphere seemed cold with us doing our duties on the side and being given food alone on the porch of the family house. One time we weren't given lunch and with the strong language barrier were unsure about the rules. We reached out to Sangeetha and clarified things a little… read more and from them on the atmosphere thawed. She is very sweet and really made us feel better, even though she wasn't there in person.
Venkatesh, the owner, speaks English enough to communicate, he is a kind host and always provided everything we needed when asked. His younger son Ankush has good English and frequently came over to chat with us which was very nice.
We helped out with cleaning the rice field, weeding, cleaning the farm from rubbish and digging around a water pond. We found the farm pretty big and varied so there is plenty of different things to help with. There are dogs Dusty and Sweety that are the cuddliest of creatures and we witnessed a goat being born.
We came in the summer season and were told to work in the morning and afternoon when the sun relaxes a little, but all work on the farm is done in the middle of the day and we found it is best to join in then to get time with people there and help them.
The accomodation is a tent within a wooden hut, a little hard for the back for the more delicate among us but we took additional sleeping bags underneath and were fine. If there are more volunteers there and the bags are taken you might wanna have some inflatable mattress with you. And a mosquito repellent is a must.
The closest town is Palahalli, 2km walk from the farm. Ankush will be happy to rent you his bike to get to the bird sanctuary which is a mere 4km away.
There were frequent electricity cuts on the farm and problems with the water in the hut's bathroom so sometimes you gotta carry it in buckets from outside of the family's house, just a 15 seconds walk. At one point the electricity was gone for a day which meant no filtered water. The family drinks the underground water then and we did too and were fine, but if it's early during your stay in India and your stomach is not yet accustomed you might wanna have it in mind.
We felt the food provided was a little not nutritious, most of the time rice with thin vegetable sauce, we thought it good to cook some ourselves and Venkatesh gave us the gas stove right the next day which was very kind of him.
There were some hardships and we ourselves felt bad as one of us fell ill and could not contribute how we wanted which made us shorten our stay but you can feel they are good people. It took us time to start forging a bond and time we had not much. If you stay, stay for longer.
