We are currently travelling around south-east Asia and are interested in volunteer opportunities in Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Laos, and Vietnam.

We are available from mid-January 2025 onwards.

Hello, we're John & Ellie!

Having both quit our jobs to see the world, we are now four months into our Asian adventure and loving every second of it! So far we have travelled through Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and Malaysia and Thailand!

We would like to find a volunteering opportunity that we could both invest ourselves into and we've decided now is the time and Asia is the place! We have heard great things about WorkAway from family and friends so we created this profile to help us find an opportunity.

We are both well travelled, and have visited many countries around Europe, South America and Africa. We love exploring new places and meeting new people to hear their stories and share ours!

We both love trying out new foods and would like to learn more about authentic and traditional cooking. One thing to note is that we are VEGETARIAN so would ideally choose a placement that caters for this!

JOHN

I'm a (nearly-qualified) architect - eight years down, and hopefully only one more left! I decided to take this break to travel before the final push towards accreditation!

Outside of work I enjoy playing and watching sport, especially football and tennis! I love the outdoors and enjoy going for hikes and exploring the countryside - whether that's back home or when travelling.

ELLIE

I’m a primary school teacher with 4 years experience teaching children between the ages of 5-11.

I love travelling to explore new cultures, eat delicious foods and appreciate the way others live their lives. When I'm not teaching, I love to bake, dance, read and spend time with family.

Was könntest du arbeiten?

TEACHING:

(Ellie) I am looking for a volunteer project where I can use my teaching skills, kindness and love for working with children to benefit a new community. I have taught in a school with 70% EAL students (English as an additional language) which means I can adapt my teaching for those with little English.

DIY & BUILDING PROJECTS:

(John) From my time at university and working as a labourer I have experience of hands-on tasks such as woodworking, stone masonry, construction tasks and general DIY jobs. I would like to further develop and help pass on some of these skills in a volunteer position which would ideally involve lots of practical involvement.

CHARITY WORK:

(John Ellie) In 2018, we both spent three weeks volunteering in Cape Town, South Africa. Working with a local charity - SAVE Foundation - we both assisted with the preparation and teaching of primary-school lessons in local townships. This experience helped us gain an understanding of language barriers and communication difficulties when teaching abroad, especially if English is not commonly spoken. We also developed leadership skills by helping with the organisation of volunteers for the charity.
