Aloha from Maya and Joel!

We are a pair of passionate travellers who love experiencing different cultures and ways of life. During 2025, we are voyaging from Australia, through the Americas and hope to eventually stretch our wits (and budget) to Europe. It’s our goal to travel with purpose, learning from and helping the communities we visit.

Maya-
Ever since my first trip to Peru in high school (fundraised through snack sales and donations), I have been an avid traveller. This next adventure will hopefully be my longest yet, and I am excited to pursue a lifestyle that encompasses travel with my personal values. I believe in living adventurously and responsibly, sharing the values I hold dear and respecting the cultures I encounter.

My previous Workaway was a unique and remarkable experience. For three months in Wartling UK, I helped with the harvest and processing of food from their orchard, caring for their horses, nannying and household chores. I have never been one to shy away from hard work. I enjoy getting my hands dirty and take pride in a job well done.

I have done a variety of volunteer work in my own community of Pahoa, Hawaii, including trash pickup, weeding, painting, tutoring, basic construction, animal care and beekeeping. I am always excited to share Hawaiian culture and language. On island, I work as a substitute teacher and as an aerial instructor/performance dancer.

Joel-
For me, the beauty of travel is the ease at which you’re offered opportunities to step out of comfort zones and attempt new experiences. Something about the fresh start you get in each place has me excited for every step in a journey. I have been incredibly lucky these last few years to have a lifestyle that allows me to travel as often as I do. I believe that this privilege comes with the responsibility of opening myself up to new experiences and to give generously to those around me.

While you won’t catch me waving any flags, I believe in embracing two of Australia’s proudest traditions. Our love for travel and our culture of hospitality and friendliness. While my day job has hardly any worldly applications (unless you have an x-ray machine in need of operating), I have always embraced life’s random and wild opportunities. I have bartended for stray bars in Southeast Asia, worked hostels in Germany, and taken backpackers out for local experiences and good times back home. I believe in a satisfying days work with a good group of people to share the experience and an afternoon beer with.
