We stayed with Anne and John for just about 1 month. Their estate is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful (if not the most) Workaways we have ever done. The view from the apartments and restaurant are breathtaking. The amount of thought, creative touch, and effort that went into designing and maintaining the grounds is evident.
Our work was varied. Kevin did a lot of invasive tree removal around the buildings, clearing and rebuilding of some of the stone drainages in pathways, tree pruning, and general landscape maintenance. He also did some basic roof repairs on 2 structures to prevent a few loose panels from ripping off in the wind (and removed a dead wild animal from the ceiling of another). Other days were dedicated to chopping wood to use for cooking.
Kevin also helped with some photography and registering the estate on Restor.eco in order to highlight some of the wildlife conservation and nature restoration work Anne and John have done over the years alongside the WNPS. The profile can be seen here: https://restor.eco/sites/4f84f293-87fb-45d0-a5b3-535823265b16/
Melissa cleaned all of the apartments and bathrooms in three of the buildings, as well as the restaurant. When she was not cleaning, she helped Kamala in the kitchen. She also cleaned out, reorganized, and sorted contents of the cellar.
Kamala prepared us 3 meals per day, which were wonderful and a diverse fusion of Sri Lankan and Western dishes. Anne was so kind as to ask Kamala to make Melissa a special meal one night as it was her birthday.
The location is indeed a bit remote, but we loved the solitude. The bus stop on the road is about a 1km walk and we took the bus several times into Bandarawela. We also did some day hikes to Amba Estate, Ella Rock, and Roseland Coffee all from Anne and John's place. We truly enjoyed being away from the tourist crowds and spent many afternoons hanging out in the restaurant, enjoying its spectacular views over Ella Gap. The abundance of wildlife literally at the doorstep was a pastime in and of itself.
Anne and John were gracious hosts and, as previous reviews suggested, told countless very entertaining stories at tea time. These conversations about life, culture, and the humorous and witty takes from John on a nonstop news cycle of current world affairs were one of the highlights of our stay. We also appreciated that expectations were made clear from the get-go, as we spent a few days seeing if the arrangement would work out for all parties (and fortunately it did!).
We feel immensely grateful to John, Anne, Jesmin, Kanna, and the ladies in the kitchen, Kamala, Lakshimi and Lakshimai, for hosting and sharing a snippet of their lives with us. Thank you so much and take care.
Kevin and Melissa

Damon was the best workaway host ever. I wanted to stay a week but stayed a month! 😂
He showed me lots of the cool spots on the Peninsula and I went to explore almost everyday myself, there's so much to see.
Pip is also the cutest wee dog, I was always scared of dogs but Pip made me feel way more comfortable with dogs.
And I was lucky enough to see her puppies!
Damon makes sure you will feel at home and makes really good sourdough;)
I spent my last days in NZ here and this made saying goodbye less sad :)
I will miss it!

Melanie is a joyful , intelligent, and sensitiva person who has been with us long enough for us to be delightes by her company. She has been an excellent frech teacher for Pablo and has always been willing to learm everything -carpenter, mansonry- and participate enthusiastically in the project. She has been a wonderful colleague to the other volunteers, and we are sure she will return to our project when her busy life allows her a moment to visit us. However, we do hopw she quits smoking... I hope see you Mela !!!

Finn was a pleasure to host. His relaxed, easy-going nature was lovely to be around. His kind, respectful, and gentle manner made him a welcome addition to our daily life.
He was hardworking, reliable, and always offering to help with any tasks that needed doing. He would not rest if we were still working, and that was such a lovely quality about him. He genuinely wanted to be involved and contribute wherever he could. He was also clean and tidy, always taking care of his space and leaving his room neat and organised.
Finn embraced life on our small farm with enthusiasm. He was fantastic with all of our animals and developed a lovely connection with the horses, approaching them with patience, confidence, and care.
We were very impressed when he learned to ride Ivy in just a week, a testament to his ability to take on new challenges. Finn has a steady, one-step-at-a-time approach to learning. He never seemed in a hurry, yet his willingness to trust the process and keep showing up meant he progressed remarkably quickly.
Finn has a lovely grounded nature and a calming presence. He is thoughtful, self-aware, and has a quiet confidence that seems beyond his years.
We thoroughly enjoyed having Finn stay with us, would welcome him back anytime, and would happily recommend him to other hosts. We wish him all the best for his future travels and adventures.

I have spent five months with Peter and his team.
I have enjoyed every day. The accommodation was basic but good. The location of our accommodation is hundred meters from the river and less than a kilometer from the center of the old town - perfect!
The food was typical Khmer food, but nothing wrong with that. I never had food poisoning.
The international volunteers with me were all great people. The local Khmer staff were fantastic and I made some friends here. They had a hard time trying to teach me Khmer.

Susanna is gorgeous! She is a hard worker, very good with the animals and very nice company. The most tedious tasks like cleaning old tiles are done with a smile. And she's handy too, sorting the tiles to fit an irregular space and fixing them like a pro!
I can recommend her to anyone.
Dear Susanna, always welcome back!

César was here for 2 weeks. A grown man who knew his job. He is a master of forestry work. He cut down a lot of large fir trees and limbed them. A master with the chainsaw. A pleasant and interesting man to have as a visitor.
He is welcome back.

It was such a pleasure staying with Phil and his family.
His home is beautiful and filled with a warm, welcoming energy that made me feel comfortable from the moment I arrived.
Phil is a true gentle giant, kind, thoughtful, and incredibly generous. He genuinely cared about me as a person, and I instantly felt welcomed, understood, and appreciated.
It was also lovely being around his daughter and niece, who are both very kind and grateful.
The dogs are wonderfully well-behaved and clearly so deeply loved. It was a joy to spend time with them, whether going for walks or cuddling together in the sunshine. I really miss them and the love and laughters they brought me!
It’s a very nice place with beautiful nature around and the work is super easy, just helping him out with the dogs and household.
I'm very grateful to have shared so many wonderful conversations during my stay. I highly recommend staying with him, you'll be warmly welcomed and appreciated.
Thank you so much for everything!

This was my very first experience staying with a host family, and I feel so incredibly lucky that it was with Romy’s family. Romy is one of the wisest, kindest, and most patient women I have ever met. She welcomed me with open arms, and I felt right at home the moment I stepped through the door. She was always so generous in sharing her stories and experiences, giving me great tips about Vienna and wonderful insights on life.
Her kids, Elisa and Daniel, are absolutely lovely. The language barrier didn't stop us at all—we managed to communicate perfectly in our own way (a mix of my broken German, English, and plenty of body language, lol!). Together, we made sushi, went bike riding, played in the garden and pool, and even went to the amusement park, making so many unforgettable memories before I had to leave. Even though I only stayed for three weeks, I had the most amazing experience with Romy, Elisa, and Daniel.
I highly recommend staying with this wonderful family to anyone looking for a meaningful Workaway experience. You will definitely love it here! Thank you so much for everything, I will miss you all!
Bis bald! See you in October ❤️

Dear kanoon and the entire team,
Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to volunteer with you. I truly enjoyed my time there and felt very welcomed from the moment I arrived. The environment was relaxed, supportive, and never felt stressful or pressured.
I was given a lot of freedom and trust, which allowed me to enjoy my work and learn many new things. I also had the chance to spend time with the team members, who are incredibly friendly, fun, and inspiring people.
The hostel itself is amazing—honestly, it's one of the best hostels I have ever seen in Chiang Rai. What made the experience even more special were the family-style dinners, parties, group conversations, card games, and all the memorable moments we shared together.
I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a volunteering experience. You can contribute meaningfully, enjoy a wonderful community atmosphere, and still have plenty of free time to explore the nearby attractions and beautiful places around Chiang Rai.
Thank you once again for this wonderful opportunity. I am very grateful for the experience and all the memories I made there.
I hope to see you all again in the future.
Thank you very much. ❤️

This is a magical and unique place, raj, as well as all the vollenteers do an amazing job making this a place where guests arrive for a day and stay for many more. It is an understatement to say that special and life filling things
happened to me during my 2 month stay here
To get more real abt my experience- during the high season you will be with a lot of people, organising events, going to parties, surfing and doing whatever comes to mind, and in the off season theres less people so you can really just hang out with the other volunteers, get close and do really cool stuff
I will never forget my experience here, i have made many friends who i will see again there and would recommend thjs place to anyone wanting to live a little

I had the best time with Ellen & Ricky. The jobs are various and interesting, the house is welcoming and the room in the shed is basic but cozy. I got to learn so many things and experience what it is to be free-getarian. Next to that, I met 2 amazing humans who have strong values and numerous stories to tell. No questions asked, you make the good choice choosing these hosts (and Edelweiss the cat)!

I stayed with Kiri and Zara for 10 days in April and May of this year. Kiri is a relaxed host who welcomed me into her family from the moment I arrived. We went hiking in a bluebell forest with one of her friends, took a trip to Cambridge to see the university and the river, visited her community garden, and enjoyed great meals and conversation at home. I had to keep odd hours because I was doing some work with clients in faraway time zones, and Kiri was extremely accommodating. Hitchin is a cute town and the town center is in walking distance. From talking with Kiri, I learned a lot about the U.K. educational system and about practices related to self-care and mindfulness. I recommend Kiri and Zara to other Workawayers looking for a welcoming and relaxing host family!
