Start tasks early, finish early then begin your adventures explore many nearby walking or hiking trails. We are close to town but in the country. 15 min to cross country skiing and within 1+ hr to 4-5 other ski hills.

Salmon Arm has been refereed to as the music capital of BC.Throughout winter months there are weekly open mic/coffee houses in nearby communities, Jazz nights, monthly concerts, and more.

We are on 10 secluded country acres, yet close to everything - 5 min drive to downtown, within walking distance 45 min to downtown, or a 15 minute walk for a $2 bus ride to town. Other buses to nearby communities as well.

As each season changes, the work available also changes. Salmon Arm has snow from about November until March, therefore there is no gardening and we do not have farm animals.

The work available during the snowy-winter months will be for those that have indoor do-it-yourself skills, or have some renovation skills to share, are confident in what they do and able to work 100% on their own. In addition to this, there will be some wood chopping, stacking, and some snow shovelling as well as household chores, cleaning, and organizing in home and garage....Therefore, let us know what you love to do and are confident doing on your own -so we can make sure we have tasks for you to do while here.

We are seeking workers that are sincerely honest about the hours of work they do, and are not just looking for a free place to stay while in recovery. Having experience is important, so please mention the jobs you wish to tackle and the experience you have in this area. Tell us what you have done 100% on your own - we say this as many hope to come to learn carpentry, or plumbing and other skills and unfortunately those types of skills are not skills we are able to teach.

Lots to experiences in and around the small town of Salmon Arm or hiking in the woods, recreation centre, gym, community pool/gym/hot tub/steam room, golf course, disc golf, bowling, etc - see further below on all the town has to offer.

We have been hosting travelers since 1995 ( on and off ) and are so appreciative of the many self-motivated, independent workawayers helping us. It has been a fun ride!

Salmon Arm sits on the edge of Shuswap Lake, surrounded by small mountains.

We are in the country yet a 5 min drive, or 45- 60 minute walk to downtown. Uptown, is a closer walk to amenities such as; groceries (Askews uptown), restaurant (The Home) pub (Setters), 24hr gym, hot tub and indoor pool at SASCU Recreation Centre, Tim Hortons, pizza.

We are on the city bus route so getting to town or even more hiking trails - is very easy - you can look up the schedule by searching Salmon Arm transit. About a 10-15min. walk to bus stop. Bus fees $2 to town.

For longer distances, 'e-bus' will bring you to Salmon Arm from the B.C. Coast, Alberta, or airports - check out e-bus online. E-bus can also take you to nearby communities for you to explore.

There are lovely walking trails all the way into town. We are next to Little Mountain Park with beautiful forested trails for easy hiking. To the top, is a 15-20 min easy walk with views of all of Salmon Arm and Shuswap Lake. Chance are, you won't get to walk all the trails Salmon Arm has to offer, - so many. Search Shuswap Trail Alliance for maps of trails in the area.

See below under 'What Else' things to do and see in the area, and what to do on your time off.

Your room is located on the lower-ground-level of the house. You have your own private entrance, and driveway. (we are upstairs). It is a complete self-contained suite downstairs (approx 1200 sq.ft) so you will have access to a full kitchen to prepare your meals also a living room, bathroom, and dining room. Very quiet. Be forewarned that it will be WINTER here in Salmon Arm. We can get a couple of feet of snow, and temperatures can average 0 to minus 10, although come January/February, temperatures can drop to -15 and more. That being said, our home is not toasty warm when temperatures drop- but not freezing cold either. If you are from Mexico, or somewhere tropical.... you won't like it HAHA, if you are used to living in a cooler environment or happy to wear slippers, warm vest or sweater you will be just fine. Some come and have no complaints, others wish it were warmer - we all have different metabolisms and tolerances when it comes to heat and cold. Additional heaters can be put into your room but the cost to us is astronomical, and therefore we can negotiate a price pending on how much usage. Most do not need this, but some have to have it hot in their bedrooms. We sleep with our bedroom window open for most of the winter and struggle to sleep in a hot room.

If you like quiet time, to be close to nature, this is the spot. There are 2.5 bedrooms downstairs and 2 bathrooms. If there are other helpers here at the same time, you will share the kitchen, living room and dining room.

Excited to hear all about you. The more we know, the better we can sort out tasks that suit you.
Feel free, if you want...... don't feel obligated.....to answer the questions below as it will help us to learn a little about you - The more we know about you, the better we can customize your experiences here both helping and how you like to spend your free time.

    ** What are your hobbies?
** What part of our description sounds enticing to you?

** In what tasks, or skills, do you feel experienced and confident doing independently?
** What projects have you accomplished on your own with respect to building and types of tools you have
experience with - the more detail the better.

** How would you like to spend your days off?
** Do you have a car or vehicle?
    ** Do you smoke?

Feel free, only if you want.... to share whether you have any medical conditions you feel important for us to know - including allergies or food sensitivities.

** Do you prefer to do early mornings, or later in the afternoon till evening?

** Is this your first Workaway experience?

**We provide fresh vegetables and fruit, dried, canned and frozen foods along and salad fixings,
eggs, oatmeal, rice, pasta and sauces, frozen pizzas. When time permits for us, we will provide some
homemade soups and casseroles but for the most part, you will be making all your own meals. You will be responsible for purchasing your own snacks, beverages, treats, and all dairy and meat products.

Some helpers come to learn about gardening and homesteading.
Some helpers come for a free place to stay while exploring, working online, or looking for off-site jobs.
Some helpers come to share their skills and expertise,
Some come to improve their language skills,
Some come to 'get some alone time'
We are curious as to what your reason for being a Workawayer is....as knowing this will help us to enhance your experience .

Each season, as the weather changes, brings new projects . Above in the section titled - "Tell Workawayers about yourself, your family, project or organisation". you will find a list of help we are particularly interested in.

Will be selling the home, so if you have skills that would help us to improve the house and property, - please let us know otherwise lots to do with do-it-yourself repairs, painting, cleaning, organizing, sorting and downsizing. We have a very large garage that always needs cleaning and organizing. A squirrel has made a mess!! Grrr! If you know what various tools are - ie for fixing cars, carpentry, plumbing, electrical etc. we have a lot to go through and sort out what is useful and why is not - but you'd have to really know your stuff lol

There is some painting in the garage that needs doing, a Reno job to the bathroom, some drywall, etc.

Handymen that are keen to use their skills must be capable of independently taking on projects they are capable of doing on their own. Please share details of what you are confident in doing on your own and we will do our best to accommodate.

Let us know if you prefer to organize, clean, do household paperwork or ??

Do you have creative skills - if so, please share what you love to do. what have you built?

Handyman help: - needs to be confident doing tasks on their own.
~ repairing around home and garage
~ creative building of an additional shower (tiling or ?) to accommodate more future workawayers?

~IF you have carpentry skills and would like to use them, just ask - open for discussion based on what we have to do and what experience you have, and if you are able to work independently. Include things you have built yourself, and tools you are comfortable using on your own.

-Winter helpers will bring wood inside at least once a week, chop kindling, shovel snow off sidewalks and stairs and 2 - 3 times a year if there is an accumulation of snow on the flat roofs of more than 15 inches, then they will need shovelling as well.

Your room is located in our guest suite on the lower-ground-level of the house, with it's own entrance. - and driveway..... (we are upstairs) .

The suite has a full kitchen with all the dishes and appliances for you to prepare your meals. You will have your own living and dining room. It is approx 1200 sq ft and could be shared with another helper from time to time.

You will cook most all of your own meals with food provided - see above.

We have found that many love to have the freedom to do their own thing. All too often fresh foods are not used and go to waste as there are so many with specialized diets and preferences.
Let us know if you prefer to purchase all your own food for less time working... no promises, but will consider as it will depend on how much we have that needs doing.

    What to do around town:

There is a bus service in town, and the local bus stop is a 10-15 min. walk from the house. For $1.50 the Salmon Arm Transit bus will take your right downtown, to the malls, or more hiking trails - although enough right here..

I believe there is also a bus that leaves Salmon Arm early to one of the ski hills returning early evening.

You can also walk to town along the backroads or take the trails through the woods all the way to town...it is about 40 minute + walk - all down hill, so you might want to take a bus back up!

Closer than walking to town is a large grocery store, local pub, HOME restaurant, 24 hour gym indoor swimming pool/hot tub/steam room (exercise room included) and shooting range.

Do a few searches on your computer for:
    THINGS TO DO.....
    Search -
a). Shuswap Trail Alliance - as it has a website with maps of many surrounding trails and group activities.

c). Tuesdays the cinema movie theatres cost you only $6- Search Salmar Theatres.
We have the Salmar Classic on Alexander St. and then the Salmar Grand with 4 movie theatres. Website

Karaoke here in Salmon Arm at local pubs, ie; Crown & Anchor, Cannoligans, and the legion.

If you have a vehicle every Saturday evening at the numerous little surrounding communities there are Coffee Houses,/ Open mic... where local and visiting musicians perform. Have had musicians that come through town and join in - you just sign up to get on the list when you arrive - I hear some pretty significant jam sessions are held privately after the audience leaves.

The Night Cafe ~ is a fun little bar/cafe/art studio/ food & pizza place that attracts artists and musicians. Go for coffee/drinks/meet locals or, book an painting lesson. Food offered are mini pizza's, kale Caesar salad,
brisket and more plus crepes and desserts too. Art Studio is called Meikle Studio - do a search or if you
want to sign up for an art lesson.
