Nestled in nature close to endless hiking and ski trails yet within walking distance to town, and close to the lake.
Salmon Arm is nestled amongst mountains and surrounded by lakes, rivers, and many smaller communities close by to explore. The population is approximately 19,000 people situated on Shuswap Lake in central British Columbia, half way between Vancouver and Calgary - about 4 hours from Banff.
As the air chills the plants begin to fade and it is time to put the gardens to bed for the winter. Digging, and pulling the last of weeds and veggies out of the ground, are all part of preparing for winter. We plant about 150+ garlic bulbs, and sprinkle fall rye on the garden beds.
Wood needs splitting, stacking and moving, and I have over 200 dahlias (flowers) that need their tubers dug up, rinsed off, and stored in boxes of shavings. Posts for next years tomatoes need securing or setting up, general yard clean up, as well as some inside cleaning and organizing.
Other chores include raking, maybe more digging, washing a few windows, and lots of 'handyman' type jobs. If you have experience with any skills that you would love to put to good use, we will have the right project for you!
Fall is a lovely time to explore trails and if you have your own car, visiting other small neighbouring communities can be fun. There are many different communities within 30 min.
We are a 15 minute drive to incredible cross country ski and snowshoeing trails, and a local bus will take you to Silverstar Mountain within an hour for downhill, snowboarding, tobogganing, snowshoeing, cross-country, pubs, food, and more. There are 5 other mountains for skiing 1 - 2 hrs from here: Big White, Sun Peaks, Revelstoke, Silver Star Mountain, and another one in Kamloops LOL, I forget.
Winter projects will include chopping kindling, bringing wood in once a week, keeping the fire going, and when snow comes - shovelling walkways and a couple of times a year we have two large flat roofs that will need the snow removed. Keeping the kitchen and living areas you will be sharing with any other house guest, very clean and tidy is essential. Daily sweeping and washing of the kitchen floor, counters clean, dishes washed and put away, etc. will be part of your personal cleaning up after yourself. This is essential, not hard, and does not take much time but is expected. Cleanliness is of the utmost importance, especially during these times when others are concerned about health and safety.
Winter stays are more suited to those that have handyman skills because once the snow arrives, we will not have any gardening, or yard work other than shovelling snow and chopping wood.
We have room and work for one BUT.......we may also have the room for two, but not enough work for two during the winter..... (unless experienced handy people) Willing to discuss alternative accommodations including less work for purchase of your own foods, etc. Feel free to ask and we can go from there, all depending on how many we have in the house at the time you contact us,
Chances are, if you travel alone, and enjoy alone time, you will appreciate the quiet here with lots of time to get out and explore!
For those with their own travelling homes, we have hook-up and a bathroom for your use.
Opportunities for students doing schooling on computer and, for those working online while travelling and doing workaway.
We are situated in a peaceful area on 10 Acres surrounded by forests, near to the lake, yet a mere 5 min drive to downtown, and we are on the bus route.
You can also walk to town through forested trails -all downhill - in 30-40 min. I suggest walking to town, and taking the local bus back up the hill - unless of course you want to increase your strength and stamina .
Property backs onto Salmon Arm Golf Course, and is across the street from easy walking trails through Little Mountain. For more of a challenge at the end of our road there are endless Mountain Biking Trails. There are 2 other golf courses nearby and many in the area.
After your day of helping there is not only the wilderness all around us to explore. What is open here are the movie theatres, gyms, pubs, restaurants, trails, ski hills and soon the recreation centre may open.
Close to......bowling, hiking, biking, skiing, the lake, the college, hospital and, as mentioned, mountainous trails.
HANDYMAN, etc: The opportunities are endless - the more experience you have, and if you enjoy doing what you do, I bet we can find the perfect project for you!!!
Let us know what you know, and love to do and we can go from there.
Should you have another unique skill you enjoy doing, please let us know and I'm sure we can put it to good
COVID: Currently, Salmon Arm is fairly safe - I do practise social distancing, and your bathroom and bedroom are separate from the main living area. You are welcome to cook your own meals in a separate kitchen that may be shared with another. Just schedule meal times separate, then wipe down countertops, handles etc. with provided cleaners. I want everyone to feel safe, respect each other's space, and enjoy their time here.
We are being reasonably cautious, and following health recommendations.
Helpers should feel comfortable working on their own during times when hosts are not available to help alongside of you. Some enjoy this, while others prefer to be doing tasks with others.
Having GOOD and effective cell phone is important. We have internet. If you are looking at what to get... check out Kudos, Telus, or Bell - just a little warning as other travellers have told me that they went for something a little cheaper which has turned out to be useless in some of the smaller towns.
if you are hiking it is for your safety to have good communication should you need help.
If you have a car, you can easily explore nearby towns of...Sicamous, Enderby, Sorrento, Blind Bay, all within 20 minutes or, venture a little further to Chase, Armstrong, and Vernon all within 40 min. or in an hour or so go to Falkland Revelstoke Kelowna and Kamloops. So much to see and do ~ Especially if you have your own vehicle although, when not working we are always out and about and you are most welcome to join. Bus service is pretty good here as well.
In the summer, there are many lakes surrounding Salmon Arm all the way to Chase and Sicamous. Rivers to swim in and water falls to explore.
Just at the end of our street are endless mountain biking trails - or for hiking. Many hiking and walking trails throughout town and outlying areas.
Cross-country ski trails become hiking and biking trails.
Having a car is beneficial otherwise there are local buses.
Our property backs onto a golf course, and sky diving airport
We do not have any farm animals here; just a cat.
Heimwerker- und Bauarbeiten
Mithilfe auf einem Bauernhof
Hilfe bei Ökoprojekten
During these times, what to do and where to visit seems to be changing from week to week.
Currently all mountainous trails around our home are open to explore with more opening in mid May.
From time to time, I do canning, dehydrating, freezing, fermenting and pickling.
There will be days/times that helpers must be willing to do tasks alone on their own - unless there are other helpers here. Feel free to discuss this with me if you have any concerns.
Two types of stays here:
1) Host is around full-time and available for fun, guidance, conversation and to drive you to beach in the summer or take you along when attending local events. Normal type of Workaway place.
2) We are crazy busy with work and less available therefore you would do tasks alone on your own, and on your time off, you will be exploring the area on your own. We try to get other solo helpers here, if you are solo, so you have someone to explore with. ...... Take the bus to the beach, go for hikes (Shuswap Trail Alliance website), or walk through the woodlands all the way to town! If you do have a car, there are many small communities all around us: Sicamous, Enderby, Sorrento, White Lake, Enderby, Vernon, Revelstoke, Mara, Blind Bay, etc.
This changes from week to week therefore, I will give you a real clear idea of what to expect - depending on when you are coming - just email and ask all your questions. I like to be open, honest and up front so that everyone has a very clear picture prior to coming to ensure your satisfaction and happiness.
Salmon Arm has many opportunities for you to enjoy live music. Until summer there are weekly music performances to attend, by donation as well as 'Coffee Houses' and concerts. During summer months there are performances in the downtown core as well as Wednesdays on the Wharf where people come with their picnics and lawn chairs or blanket to sit in the park and enjoy the music.
Salmon Arm is also famous for the Roots and Blues Music Festival in August but has been cancelled this year.
WE NEED HELP . . . . . .
With repairs, building, and every type of handyman task you can imagine. You name it - we have got it.
IN THE HOUSE:
~ Organizing and giving everything a thorough clean
~ Bringing wood in, chopping and stacking
-= Some painting and repairs
~ lots to do if you are a gardener, carpenter, plumber, or electrician.
OUTSIDE AROUND THE HOUSE IN THE FALL:
~ Chopping and stacking wood
~ General clean up all around and put everything away for winter
~ Gathering bundles of twigs from the forest for kindling
- once the snow sets in the only help is shovelling snow, brining wood in and Carpentry along with other "handyman" jobs
- Digging, and mulching gardens for winter, pulling out the plants that are finished, digging up dahlia tubers, rinsing and packing away for the winter. Planting garlic
GARDENS in the Springtime:
Involves getting the beds ready in the Spring.
As fruits and vegetables ripen, we will be canning, pickling, freezing, and dehydrating.
Daily watering, weeding, of all flowers and vegetables.
~ Lots of yard help/cleaning as well, cleaning and tidying up. Some raking, and lots of digging if you want to get into shape
~ We have close to 200 dahlias (beautiful flowers) that will need help 'waking up from hibernation' and preparing for
OUTSIDE IN THE SPRING:
~ Waking up the garden, preparing the ground, turning soil, weeding
- Planting seeds, weeding and watering daily
- Lots of flowers to seed and plant
- Building more planters?? And maybe adding some garden boxes, if you have the skills
Let us know if you prefer to help within a strict schedule or, if you are okay with helping some days longer and others shorter. We would also like to know what your hobbies are, what kind of tasks you like to do, and what your strengths are.
Do you prefer to do tasks on your own independently, or do you like to help alongside others?
What activities or areas would you like to explore during your time off?
Do you like time to be alone or, do you prefer lots of social time?
What are your hobbies?
Do you have other skills we may be able to put to use?
Knowing a bit about you, helps us to plan the type of tasks that would best suit you. Please let us know as much as you can about your skills and past experiences.
There is an independent ground level suite on the lower level, the main house is on upper level.
In the suite there is a fully stocked kitchen, living room, dining room all just off the room where you will stay. If there are 2 of you during winter months please let us know the skills you have other than gardening as we will be under snow.
The main part of the house is on the 2nd floor.
The area where you will stay may be shared with other workers, each with their own room.
Food is vegetarian although, should you wish to purchase your own meat to cook or BBQ, feel free.
If you want more time to explore, to take on a part-time job, willing to discuss less daily work hours in exchange for purchasing your own food.
During the virus times, you will likely be preparing your own food in a separate kitchen, but shared with other potential guests. Meal times can be staggered so that you are working alone in the kitchen.
Basic foods are supplied for one. If you prefer to purchase your own food for less work hours, please let us know and we can discuss our options.
We have a food checklist to send to you, of the foods we supply such as: fresh vegetables, canned foods, pasta, rice, sauces, oatmeal, bread, frozen foods, frozen prepared meals, frozen pizza, beans, eggs, canned soups, peanut butter, apples, bananas, oranges, 1/2 gallon of milk per week, coffee and tea. I will send you a food checklist, and you can check off which foods you eat, don't eat, or prefer. Can't guarantee it will ALL be here, but it gives me a good idea when shopping.
Extra additional foods or other 'preferred foods' are up to you to purchase as you desire, such as: meat, treats, snacks, specialty 'preferred' foods, all beverages, and extras are up to you to purchase - if and when you want - at nearby shopping.
If you prefer to purchase your own food for shorter work hours, just let us know and we can discuss further.
UPDATED DUE TO COVID: ~ Learning as we go, suggestions welcome.
We are being cautious and following all the recommendations - we need to all be safe.
If you have a van, camper or motorhome, there is lots of room for you to park although if you plan on using it in the winter, it should be winterized.
There is a bathroom downstairs, separate from the main living area you MAY need to share with any other workers, should there be any. You will each be responsible for insuring it is clean and safe for all after use.
The room is very small, clean, and one door leads to outside, the other door to the kitchen with access to the bathroom assigned to workers with a shower, toilet and sink (may be shared sometimes, so cleaning it daily is something we need workers to do)
There are laundromats downtown for your laundry but, not here in the house.
Please do not hesitate to ask questions.
You will enjoy hiking and if you have a car there are many smaller surrounding communities to explore. There is a bus service in town, and the local bus is a 5 min. walk from the house. Walking to town is about 40 min. through trails and to get to shopping or the gym is 5 min by car or about a 25 min. walk.
Google Shuswap Trail Alliance has a website with maps of many surrounding trails and group activities.
There are also community organized walking, hiking, and biking groups (mountain biking trips organized by Skookum Cycle)
We have a great little news paper called the 'Friday am' that lists all the events here and surrounding small communities. Goggle Friam (dot) ca, and take a look whats happening here now!

We are also 15 min. from larch hills, some of the best cross-country skiing ever
We are not far from the Recreational Centre that includes a full exercise gym, hot tub, sauna, and swimming pool; pay a small amount to enjoy all three! May not be open due to covid, BUT....the gyms are open and there is one nearby.
Winter months there is lots of music at Coffee Houses, and Jazz nights google jazzsalmonarm usually by donation.
SPRING and SUMMER:
There are many lovely sandy beaches in and surrounding this town, as well as swimming river in Enderby, and if you have transportation beaches from here to Chase and all the way to Sicamous!
The closest beach (Canoe Beach) is a short bus ride from here, a 40 min. bike ride, or a good walk 1.5 hrs maybe..
So many areas to explore in the summer.
