Salmon Arm sits on the edge of Shuswap Lake, surrounded by mountains, with endless hiking/biking trails. We are in the country yet 5 min from town and the beach. There are lovely walking trails all the way into town. Across the street is Little Mountain Park with beautiful forested trails and a viewpoint where you can see all of Salmon Arm and the vastness of Shuswap Lake.

Salmon Arm is within a 15 – 25 min drive to approx. 6 other small communities to explore with beaches, rivers, waterfalls, hiking trails and summer markets. Salmon Arm is half way between Vancouver and Calgary and a little more than an hour from Kamloops and Kelowna.

Your room is located on the lower level of the house (we are upstairs) with a full kitchen for you to prepare your meals, living room and dining room. When other guests or workers are here, these areas may be shared. Your room has a dresser, place to hang clothing, double bed and rocking chair with lamp for evening reading. The room has 2 doors – one leading directly to outside, the other is into the kitchen. If one of the Airbnb guest rooms are available, then you may also be in one of them. The bathroom may also be shared from time to time, and has a toilet, sink, and shower. Guests staying here often leave early a.m. for work and return in the evening for dinner and usually retire to their rooms. I generally only accept guests that are in town for temporary work.

Please let us know if you will be traveling with your own accommodation ~ we have lots of room to park your van or RV, as well as for tenting should you prefer that.

Outside of the suite, there are two lawn areas, a picnic table, fire pit area, and BBQ.
Walking trails are plentiful and just across the road, hiking trails just down the road.

Due to covid, you may prefer to do your own shopping for less hours of work for the first week. Open for discussion.

During the Summer months, we need help with:
Planting a variety of vegetables and flowers
    Transplanting
    Watering
    Weeding
    Fertilizing
    Mulching
    Mowing Lawns
    General yard work
    Cleaning/preparing rooms for guests
    Staking tomatoes
    Harvesting
Preparing food for preserving, canning, dehydrating, freezing
May also include some general cleaning in garage or house

Lots of Handyman/Carpentry work to be done should you prefer that. If you have the desire, the skills, and experience to work on your own, you will not run out of things to do. A second residence on the property needs work, and is a nice place to work when the weather is too hot or, too wet and cold. Just let us know about all your skills you would like to exercise, and we will find a place to use them.

We do not have farm animals, just a cheeky kitty.

    Questions:
    What are your hobbies?
What work do you LOVE, don't love as much?
Are you comfortable working and being alone or do you prefer others around?
In what areas do you feel experienced and confident doing independently?
How would you like to spend your days off?
Do you have a car or vehicle?
What would you like to learn about?
Is this your first Workaway experience?

Lots to learn and share about gardening both vegetables and flowers.

During summer/fall months we do canning, dehydrating, freezing, fermenting and pickling.

I will often invite others to join us in cooking over the campfire for a weekend social so as helpers can meet others and have a fun evening. With covid, gatherings and events make it more difficult so we just do our best.

Salmon Arm usually has many opportunities for you to enjoy live music. Until summer there are weekly music performances to attend, by donation as well as 'Coffee Houses' and concerts. During summer months there are performances in the downtown core as well as Wednesdays on the Wharf where people come with their picnics and lawn chairs or blanket to sit in the park and enjoy the music.

    EVERY SEASON:

You will enjoy hiking and if you have a car there are many smaller surrounding communities to explore. There is a bus service in town, and the local bus is a 5 min. walk from the house. Walking to town is about 40 min. through trails and to get to shopping or the gym is 5 min by car or about a 25 min. walk.

Google Shuswap Trail Alliance has a website with maps of many surrounding trails and group activities.
There are also community organized walking, hiking, and biking groups (mountain biking trips organized by Skookum Cycle)

We have a great little news paper called the 'Friday am' that lists all the events here and surrounding small communities. Goggle Friam (dot) ca, and take a look whats happening here now!

During winter months, you are fairly close to 5 downhill ski resorts and 1 exceptional cross-country ski area.
Ski hills become hiking and biking trails during the rest of the year.

    SPRING and SUMMER:
There are many lovely sandy beaches in and surrounding this town, as well as swimming river in Enderby, and if you have transportation beaches from here to Chase and all the way to Sicamous!
The closest beach (Canoe Beach) is a short bus ride from here, a 40 min. bike ride, or a good walk 1.5 hrs maybe..
So many areas to explore in the summer. there is a local bus

FALL: Endless hiking, Salmon Run from the end of Sept till end of October (40 min. drive to lovely area to view Salmon and for easy trail walking - beautiful), cold lake swimming, lol,
Gyms are open, movie theatres and all restaurants,/pubs, etc. are all open.

    WINTER:
During the winter months we are 15 min. from Cross-country ski trails and snowshoeing. For those with a vehicle we are 50 min. from Silver Star Mountain, and an hour + away from Revelstoke, Big White, and Sun Peaks Ski Resorts.
Daily a bus will take you from Salmon Arm up to Silver Star Mountain which is an hour away. Revelstoke Mountain also an hour away while Big White and Sun Peaks 1.5 hrs + weather and road conditions pending.

When the snow comes there are buses to Silverstar Mountain for downhill skiing, cross-country, tobogganing tubing hills, pubs, restaurants and more! Buses leave in the a.m. return late afternoon.
We are also 15 min. from larch hills, some of the best cross-country skiing ever

We are not far from the Recreational Centre that includes a full exercise gym, hot tub, sauna, and swimming pool; pay a small amount to enjoy all three! May not be open due to covid, BUT....the gyms are open and there is one nearby.

Winter months there is lots of music at Coffee Houses, and Jazz nights google jazzsalmonarm usually by donation.

    Throughout the year......During normal times.........
Tuesdays - I try to go every Tuesday for $5- movie night, and a local pub after for a drink
Thursdays Karaoke and free pool at Grindrod pub
also on Thursdays by donation there is Jazz Music night google jazz salmon arm
Saturday evenings there are International Films
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday nights musical entertainment at Coffee Houses, and Jazz nights, where locals get up to play music and sing
First Friday of each month the Art Gallery has an open house with music, snacks, and drinks.
If you are a hiker or Mountain biker - you will be in paradise

Not sure what of the above, will take place this winter as things are ever-changing.

    FEW ADDED NOTES, in summary:

I try to take time to explore with you when we are all caught up with chores. Hike, bike or catch a bus to easily explore trails and get to town.

If you have a car then exploring is endless. Sicamous, Grindrod, Enderby, Blind Bay, Sorrento, are all smaller towns than Salmon Arm and within a 15 - 30 min. drive.
Drive 1 - 1.5 hrs and you can explore Vernon (40 min), Armstrong (30 min.) Revelstoke, Kelowna, Lumby, Westbank, Chase, Kamloops, and Falkland

We are 1/2 way between Banff and Vancouver and those travelling between these two places will most likely pass through Salmon Arm.

Winter ski hills all within 1.5 hrs or less are: Revelstoke Mountain, Sun Peaks, Big White, and less than an hour is Silver Star and endless cross country ski trails just a 15 - 20 min. drive from here.

Thank you for taking the time to read my profile, should you feel like I should be a fit for you I will very much look forward to meeting you :) Be sure to email or call with all your questions. Happy Travelling.
