Aloha. We live on special sacred land in Maui Hawaii at Honolua Bay. We genuinely hope that you have a wonderful time here with us while being a positive addition to our community. We are a family of five living in a yurt and usually have one or two help traders on the land as well.
Our off the grid fruit tree farm is on a three acre parcel in Honolua Valley and is just a seven minute walk to the bay. We grow banana, papaya, ‘ulu (breadfruit), lemons/limes, coconut, avocado, and noni. We also have chickens. We are utilizing the food we grow for ourselves, our workawayers, friends, and people in need. We believe that when you live on an island, and you have land, that you need to grow food for sustainability's sake.
There is a beautiful stream bed on the property that is often flowing. The bay is fantastic for snorkeling and has amazing waves during much of the winter. Honolua also has great Hawaiian cultural and historical significance which you will learn about while you are here.

Honolua is a very beautiful and magical place. It is difficult for regular tourists to learn about Hawaiian history because Hawaii has been so commercialized. Did you know that Hawaii was and still is a sovereign nation? While here we will share with you the concept of Ahupua'a and our land's role in it. We have a program you can go through while here that introduces you to Hawaiian language and culture. You will have access to recomended Hawaiian books. We can teach you about the Hawaiian plants we grow, their role in the culture, and the sacred nature of Honolua. We are founding members of the Save Honolua Coalition and helped save the surrounding area from commercial development. There is great snorkeling in the summer and great surfing in the winter. There are great beaches and hikes within walking distance.
We also would like someone to help w/ building, weeding, weed whacking, mowing, pond cleaning, harvesting, wood moving, chainsaw, and misc. tasks
You will sleep in a 10x10’ tent on a raised platform w/ roof over it to keep rain and sun off. There is a common area with kitchen, sofa, and bathroom w/ hot water shower, and toilet.
We have a washer/dryer on the property and will do your laundry for you once a week.
You will want to bring eco friendly mosquito repellant, comfortable work shoes, flashlight, and a good hat. We have the best eco friendly sunscreen available for purchase.
No smokers please.
On your days off, if you would like to have adventures, there are lots of hikes and some amazing beaches nearby. When you want to explore other parts of the island, we can drop you off at the nearby bus stop which is located a few miles down the road at Napili Market. Or it is a $7 Uber. For bus routes, Google Maps Transit works great or google maui bus.
Keep in mind we have lots of bugs and critters in hawaii including mosquitos, spiders, cockroaches, mice, feral chickens & feral cats. The tents are great because they seal up and keep the critters out. We live off the grid so our solar electrical system is prone to outages especially on rainy days. Also, i have two children so they can make kid noises. Wild roosters often “kock a doodle do” at night.
Regarding cell phone service on our land... Verizon works pretty well. T-mobile works ok off and on. Sprint & ATT don't work at all. We have limited wifi on the property. Most people catch a ride with us in the morning to the nearby coffee shop for robust wifi.
Since our only Internet option is satellite, we offer limited Internet of 5gb/month per month and its spotty and slow. It usually is enough for simple web browsing and email but not for streaming or video. We recommend that you download your video, software updates, and other high data usage activities at our local coffee shop.
When you fly in, we recommend that you land into Kapalua (JHM). JHM is less than 10 minutes from our farm so we can easily pick you up. If you must fly into Kahului (OGG) it is more difficult for us to pick you up. It is probable that you would have to take the 3 hour bus ride (last departure 5:40PM). Or you can Uber for about $75.
