Kara is a wonderful young woman, fun to be around and she was very helpful when she stayed at our farm. We definitely had some very memorable adventures and me, my daughter and all the animals loved her😊 Gets our full recommendation 🤩

I stayed with Halla and her daughter for a bit over a month in August/September. As I was already in Iceland, they kindly picked me up in Reykjavík. 20 minutes into the car ride, I felt like I could talk and share freely without being judged.

… read more caring, fair and wants you to make the most out of your experience.
I got to stay in the big room on the top floor and absolutely loved it! I felt very comfortable. It was cozy and private.
My morning routine consisted of checking up on all the animals, feeding them and changing their water. Halla is working on a system with lists (morning chores, afternoon chores, weekly, monthly...) to help you keep track of what needs to be done. There are always a lot of different additional projects coming up and you can help with whatever you're good at or you'd enjoy learning!
The horses are adorable and very affectionate. Don't be fooled by their pretty faces tho because when you try to get them to switch fields, they will use every trick in the book to stay on the grass longer!! I miss them dearly :(
The dogs love attention and will accompany you to every outside task you attend to . They're lovely.
If you have good organisation skills, you will be greatly appreciated. If you can't handle messy, this isn't for you. There are always dishes to be done and clothes on the floor. The house will always be as clean as you keep it. Mind you, there are 3 dogs (and a new puppy) running around as well as 5 cats, so you really can't be scared of animal hair because, naturally, it'll be everywhere. The bathroom isn't ideal, but bearable.
If you can cook that's a big plus since it can get a bit chaotic and irregular at times.
Her daughter doesn't have a screentime or strict rules in general which felt a bit challenging to adjust to for me at first. I quickly figured out if you treat her nicely, listen to her and (best case scenario) if you're interested in makeup and on top of the newest Tiktok slang, you'll be fine. She can be full of surprises, in a good way ;). We (just me and her) went swimming (+ eating ice cream afterwards, of course!) twice and had a blast.
I was lucky enough to see the Northern lights quite often, mostly due to Halla being kind enough to let me know every time they were visible. (Thanks again!)
Halla felt a friend. Once I was feeling really bad and started crying on the phone, without any hesitation she offered to come back and be there for me even though she had just left for work. Even though I didn't pick her up on her offer, it just showed me how I was valued as a human being here. Another example of this was Halla buying me cough syrup right away when I got sick and without expecting anything in return.
Halla is super grateful and appreciative of the help she gets. I was the only Workawayer for most of my stay and she greeted my efforts and active attitude with generosity and gratitude. She spontaneously bought a second car while I was there (you'll find a sticker claiming it as almost my property hehe) and I hold the trust I was given in high regard.
I was lucky enough to be in Iceland during the shepherding season and Halla made a whole adventure out of it and also taught me how to ride with two horses at hand.
I learned not to take everything personally and accept people for who they are. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
I got to know a strong, very capable woman who you can talk to and have a lot of fun with, raising an equally strong little girly pop!
Thank you for hosting me.
Lots of love,
Kara

We were dreaming to discover Icelandic Christmas traditions and we have been lucky to meet Halla ! We learned a lot about this period, with the food, the folklore and Icelandic Christmas trolls (they have been so kind with us during 13 days before Christmas (thank you). Halla, invited us at some Christmas events in her community and she offered us

She has shared with us traditional meals like horse sausage, the skate fish which is always eat the 23th of December, or smoked lamb (so good). We cooked together a lot of cakes like Skufukaka (Icelandic cake), cookies, rye bread ice cream with Daim (we are still dreaming about that), sourdough bread. We made her and her daughter discovered Quiche Lorraine and Galettes des rois.
Our tasks were to take care of animals : feeding chicken, rabbits, guinea pigs and even bonus mouses, lol (released in the nature before we left). We also cleaned chicken house, cats house, guinea-pig house and rabbits house, spending time with the 3 dogs, Kràtur the crazy one, Cola the gentle one and Kràka the old bloody one ahah (there are so amazing and we miss them so much).
Sometimes the most difficult part of the job was to be stuck in the bed to pet our roommate (Freya, the lovely cat, lol).
We also watered horses during freezing winter time, helping her too fed them 2 or 3 times and we participated on the daily life like taking care of the house, dishes, vacuum, cleaning, and share cooking time, go to the grocery…
Halla learned us few Icelandic words, but we will not pronounce some of them here lol.
The localisation of the house is in the countryside (15 minutes of Selfoss), she lets us borrowed her car when we wanted to travel.
We just want to say a big THANK YOU for all of the things we made, we learned and for these 6 weeks together. You are a wonderful woman, very kind and with a big sens of humor. We can say than we found a friend, or maybe a heart big sister. ❣️
We will come to say hi when we will come back to iceland for sure!
PS : She speaks a remarkable French, so she will be happy to try her intermediaries skills with you.
PS2 : She is a remarkable english teacher too.
PS3 : Her daughter is a teenager in a body of 8 years old. A lovely crazy one. 🤪

The work at Hallas home (mainly cleaning, “baby”-sitting and caring for the animals) was fun and easy.
Within the first 24 hours at Hallas farm, I’ve already been riding an Icelandic horse trying to catch some sheep and have seen the northern lights for the first time in my life. :) Halla put so much effort into showing me her country and its culture and I am really greatful for that. I will never forget our horse riding tours, the concerts by and trampoline sessions with Brynhildur, the réttirs, our trip to Westman Islands, holding a puffin baby and herding horses with the car.
I really hope that we will see each other again next year! Please give kisses to all the animals and some extra hugs to Kátur, Kola, Chocolate and Óskasteinn. Ég sakna þín!

The last couple of weeks at Halla's place we started to renovate her daughter's room and go out for rides. It was a lot of fun looking after the little one, I did face some challenges along the way but I think I overcame them pretty well and started to really bond with her.
