If you love exploring forests and mountains, have strong DIY skills, and enjoy meeting new people (in safe and responsible circumstances!), this might be the Workaway opportunity for you. While tourism in Armenia this year is at a low point, we're looking to the future – and so our mission for 2020 is to build a community hub for hikers and outdoor lovers in the heart of Dilijan National Park, ready to open in the spring of 2021, or as soon as conditions improve. You'll be living privately in the hostel while you're volunteering for us, and it won't be open to the public during your stay. Our future goal is that guests, members and local partners will help maintain the hiking trail network, either by generating funds by staying with us, or joining work crews on the trails themselves, which in turn brings new opportunities to local people and helps protect the national park from illegal hunting and logging. We are also co-founders of the Transcaucasian Trail, a long-distance trail network being built across the Caucasus, and this will be the first dedicated hikers' hostel on the trail. Join us!

You’ll be based in the heart of Dilijan’s old town, within easy reach of the National Park’s extensive network of trails, making this a perfect base for exploring northern Armenia and spending time in some of the best mountain and forest wildernesses in the country. We have strong ties to many local businesses and entrepreneurs and can connect you with almost any opportunity you might imagine.
The big project this year is to convert the old house we have purchased into a functioning hostel and community space. This will involve a wide variety of practical and creative work – renovation, gardening and landscaping projects, upcycling old furniture, creating decorations and furnishings from discarded and donated materials, and creating a friendly and warm atmosphere for hikers by whatever means we can think of! Examples include painting and decorating interior and exterior spaces, DIY and carpentry projects to create communal spaces for relaxation, maintaining and improving paths around the property, weeding and planting garden areas, processing firewood, and improving the exterior appearance of the property using donated and found materials. If it is possible to operate the hostel this year on a 'beta-testing' basis, we will also need help hosting guests and with general housekeeping, including changing bed linen when guests departs, keeping the kitchen area clean and tidy, and being available to assist guests. We will expect each volunteer to contribute 25 hours a week on a flexible weekly timetable, and we’re looking for people who can commit to a stay of at least one month. We will strongly encourage you to go hiking in the area as often as possible so that you can share your experiences with other volunteers.

We have private sleeping spaces for four volunteers – two in a large canvas bell tent, which is set up with two single beds, and two more in bunk-beds in the future hostel dormitory. You’ll have the private use all of the communal facilities at the hostel this year while it remains closed to the public, and you’ll also have access to a secure storage room and workshop with a large range of hand tools and power tools.
We’re long-time international travellers, as well as experts on the local area and the hiking opportunities in the national park. We can help you arrange local transport to explore the region more widely during your free time. We speak the local language and are here to help you get the most out of your time here!
