    Description

My name is Julie. I'm a retired public school teacher. I live in a beautiful community in the mountains of northern California and love hosting people from all over the world. Sharing what we know enriches our lives! Despite having a 30 year career in teaching little kids in public school, I have always loved building. I worked in the trades before becoming a teacher. I have completed many projects around my property (check out the fence and gates in the photos which were designed and built by me) with many more planned for the future. I also have a fairly large garden filled with flowers and food. I will not ask you to do things that I'm unwilling to do! We will work together. I am very cheerful and energetic and love being around people who have a positive outlook on life. I have hosted many international travelers and love to travel myself. Visiting past workawayers is one of the things I enjoy most about hosting people!

I live in the redwoods of Northern California. There are hiking trails leaving from my front door. My house is in a very quiet area with lots of privacy, quiet and nature. The area nearby is beautiful and the nearest town has a lot to offer despite being small.

    Help

I have a lot of projects going on all the time! My next focus will be on establishing new walkways around my garden beds. In addition, I have several inside projects and, depending on your skill level and interest, you might join in on these as well. You do not need to have experience, but you must have an aptitude for working with your hands, a willingness to learn, and the acceptance of taking directions from me. I have a large garden and you can join in on gardening activities if you like. I would also really love it if you can cook, because it's fun for me to share some meals with the people I host. I can share some of my favorite dishes with you and you can share yours with me!

Occasionally I travel and then need someone to keep everything going (gardens watered, kitties fed, etc) until I return.

    Accommodation

You will live in the little house on my property. I built this space and it is (at least in my mind) very sweet and comfortable. You will have your own private home with a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. I will provide food for you. I'm a vegetarian and appreciate it if you are the same, but this is not essential. I will provide the foods you like, within reason. There is a very efficient wood stove in the little house and it is the only source of heat. You will stay nice and cozy but wood stoves take time and attention. Be ready for that! There is tons of wood ready for you to use.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

This part of California is very beautiful. I live in the mountains. I'm about 45 minutes from the ocean and 2-3 hours north of San Francisco. My house is five miles from town. As is typical of the states, public transportation is very limited but I will do my best to fetch you from a nearby city and show you around my area. It's wonderful if you have your own car but many people do not, so we'll work things out so you see things, have fun, and enjoy your time with me.

My neighborhood has hundreds of acres of forest that will remain as open space in perpetuity, in order to support wildlife. You might see or hear black bears, mountain lions, bobcats and foxes. Deer visit regularly and will walk up to you begging for food. We might actually have raccoons, skunks, squirrels and chipmunks running around in the house! (I politely ask them to leave!)

This workaway is best for people who can find sustenance in solitude and in nature. You must be secure enough in yourself to spend time alone and to love the natural world.

There is little/no internet available and there is poor cell reception. You must be willing to be unplugged or VERY patient with spotty service! You can always hike up the road to the ridge (about 1 kilometer away) and you'll have good cell reception. There is free wifi at the library in town as well as in other locations.

We are living in troubled times here in the USA. I need to surround myself with creative, proactive, caring people who know and understand that even the smallest act of good or evil has a profound effect on all of us. I choose kindness, respect and dignity!

Priority is given to people who have been reviewed on Workaway.

I cannot help you obtain a visa.
